Deep Space Nine: For the Fans - Page 5

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

We watched "Necessary Evil" last night, which I think is one of the series' best episodes. I like how it utilized Lost-style flashbacks a decade before Lost came into being.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I watched Shakaar. A pretty good episode, marred by the B story and a single line of dialog. First of all, the B "story" was pretty weak: "O'Brien plays darts!" And, it caused the timeline to be screwed. O'Brien tears his rotator cuff and requires surgery. Bashir says, "He'll be back and ready to play tomorrow afternoon." The next scene features Kai Winn telling Sisko that Kira and Shakaar have been on the run for two weeks (which, really, Sisko seemed a little unconcerned that his XO was missing for so long). At the end, it cuts back to O'Brien playing darts, and Bashir ask him how he's feeling after the surgery. Even if the recovery took a little longer than anticipated, he wouldn't still be asking the question in two weeks.

I'm going to have to check my Companion Guide later and see if they mention this. They never seem to be bugged by the things that bug me. Another example was when Sisko strongly implied that his father was dead in a couple of early episodes. I really hoped the Guide would have mentioned the change in plans there, but it didn't.

It seems I come here to nitpick about things at times, so I want to reassure you that this is by far my favorite Trek show and one of my top shows of all time. Overall, I have very few complaints, but little, inconsequential things do spring up when I'm going through it again like I am now.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I'm currently re-watching DS9 too. I'm in the latter parts of Season 3 at the moment and still loving this show.

Anyone else noticed the significant change in the cinematography between seasons 1-2 and the remainder of the series? Starting with S3, the station's interior lighting became noticeably brighter and the sets somehow "bigger looking." I remember reading that this was a conscious choice to show the increasing strategic importance of the station.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Yeah, I read about it in the Companion Guide, which is a must-have. I think it was when Jonathan West came over as the main lenser.

Sorry to hear about that, Dave. Hopefully the replacement won't fail you.

Haven't I read online that the episode "Explorers" is not highly regarded? I think it was excellent, in both the A and the B storylines.

I thought it was a great ep. It was a really good showcase for the Sisko men. I always thought Ben and Jake's relationship was one of the most real feeling in all of Trek.

Especially considering this relationship is the basis of the biggest tearjerker, and often-considered best episode of all, The Visitor (in S4, the opener I think, or certainly an early ep.)

A friend commented that it had a special resonance for him, which I also felt when I finally watched it, in that we both lost our fathers when we were in our early/mid-20s (we're in our mid-30s now). Though that's nothing close to how someone who's father died when he was a boy would feel watching this episode, I think.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I remember the week after my dad died when I was in my 20's, my friend Ty brought over The Visitor and yes, I was blubbering by the end.
I just rewatched it and while still very good, well made and moving, I wish the old age makeup on Todd hadn't been so severe or looked so makeup-y. It was actually a bit distracting.
But, still a great episode.

Just got the replacement disc..!

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Saw "Sanctuary" last night (season 2) and enjoyed it a lot. This is one of the ones I'd forgotten about. Again, we see how subtle the writers are about introducing the Dominion. The people in this story are refugees from the Dominion. Apart from the Ferengi's information on trading with them, this is the first indication the Federation has of the Dominion or that they are agressive enough to conquer other people.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Saw "The Alternate" last night, and I have questions: To what does the title refer? Was that a dead member of Odo's species they found? Why did the removal of the pillar cause the release of the gas?

And why is James Sloyan so good in all his Trek appearances? (His Adm. Jarok on TNG remains one of the best guest spots of the series.)

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Is it just me, or have they dumbed Dax down in season 5? Her inappropriate jokes and the general way she carries herself just seem so out of character.

It's been about two months and a week since I started watching the series again. I most recently watched Trials and Tribble-ations.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

There was an effort to make Dax a fun-loving, hard-living free spirit. It wasn't always successful - for one thing, it made her character inconsistent with the egghead scientist that she had to be as the station's science officer.

We watched "Equilibrium" last night, which was a pretty good Dax episode. I thought she was great when she showed some vulnerability in her scenes with Bashir aboard the Defiant. I also think that the character was kind of lost and found herself around the time of "Blood Oath." From then on, Jadzia adopted a more mature, code of honor attitude that was reflected in her character. (Of course, I think the writers "found" Dax at the same time - before that they didn't know what to do with her.)

We're into season 3 now and loving it.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I think that was part of the uneasiness. Unjoined Jadzia was a hardened science type, and the Dax symbiont "lightened her up" so to speak

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Don't forget she also "assimilated" the crazy murderer/artist personality a few years in.

That has got to change her total personality a bit.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I'm talking about an overnight change. The Dax of "The Ship" didn't exist before season 5. There have been other scenes where she seemed totally disconnected. Maybe this was the start of Farrell's restlessness with the show.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Who's still watching? We finished "The Die Is Cast" last night, which was really the first of the big space battle episodes, which got so good in the later seasons. Still, the show managed to always be about more than space battles - it was just an example of the large canvas they were painting on. "Die" reminded me how much I liked Paul Dooley in his role.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

That's the whole thing I loved about the space battles.. they weren't there just for the effect, they were the only logical outcome of actions taken or not taken by the characters. DS9 is like comfort food TV. Very, very few shows I could drop in at any time and watch incessently and enjoy.

The episode "The Ship" isn't exactly the right episode to base such a thing on given its affect on every character.

She was really annoying for a good number of episodes around that time. She returned to normal soon thereafter. But, the Ship was a stressful situation, but nothing character-altering. It's probably been a month or more since I watched that, so I don't remember exactly what you mean.

Anyway, I'm still watching. I just recently finished the season 5 finale, which was one of the best episodes of all. Just incredible. It almost didn't seem right that I didn't have to wait any amount of time at all to see the continuation. I did wait two nights, though. The season 6 premiere was the last one I've seen. I want to dive into it, but the fall season has been eating into my TV time. I'll probably get in some DS9 this weekend.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Anyone still out there watching? We finished "Sacrifice of Angels" last night, one of the show's best. The show is all new to my wife, who can't believe it keeps getting better.

I think the show was never better than in the 5th season finale and first 6 episodes of season 6. It was like a Winds of War tapestry, with so many characters in different storylines.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I am a fan of all of Trek, but TOS and DS9 hold a special place in my heart.

We are currently in the final arc of the series (first time through it). I really appreciate DS9 for a variety of reasons. It is such an awesome show, with top-notch writing much of the time. I have loved for years how the series has primary, secondary, and tertiary characters, and how even at the third level these characters are frequently developed very well.

Last night, we watched Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges and Penumbra. I was pleased to see the ice broken between Worf and Ezri. I also liked how she didn't back down from him, and stood her ground. And I love the Breen angle. That's a species that to me is quite intriguing. I wish we could have learned a lot more about them. This series could have gone on for a couple more years, and I would not have tired of it.

We just this weekend revisted this seven episode arc. It's definitely one of the best arcs ever on any Star Trek series. (Rivaling even the 10 episode "finale'" at the end of DS9's 7th Season). And the repercussions of Sisko's appeal to the Prophets in "Angels" runs all the way through the balance of the series. Now *that's* continuity!!

I've often wondered what Voyager would have been like if it had ever had the courage to attempt an arc of this nature.

BTW, I bet your wife is really going to enjoy the next episode ("You Are Cordially Invited ...")

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

Dax's change of personality in "the Ship" was due to them being subjected to the orbital bombardment for hour and hours. She was showing the stress from lack of sleep and the constant nearby explosions. That is why the military use loud music to get people to come out of buildings (ie: Panama)

If you notice, all of the Star Fleet folk were acting more and more irrational as time went by in that episode (once the bombardment started).

To quote the great Samuel L. Jackson (in the movie Jurassic Park) "Hold on to your Butts!!" That final arc ends in a rush!! You're in for a treat!

We're really looking forward to it. We've actually been anticipating this final season for about four years!

BTW, that seven part arc (concluding episode of Season Five and the first six episodes of Season Six) is astonishing, to say the least.

I also enjoyed the much shorter (but still very intriguing) three-part arc back in the second season (The Homecoming, The Circle, and The Siege). I found that arc to be quite challenging to follow at times, but enjoyed it immensely.

Agreed. Necessary Evil is a top-notch episode. I often watch it in conjunction with Things Past; I like the parallelism between Kira and Odo at (or near) the conclusions of both episodes.

BTW, nice commentary on Sanctuary and James Sloyan. He's got one of those voices--whether he's Jarok, or Jetrel, or whomever--that is very distinct. Another of those is Joseph Ruskin (Galt in The Gamesters of Triskelion, elder Klingon in LFPIATWP, and (I think) the clandestine Cardassian informant that Odo goes to visit (without revealing his source to Sisko) in order to glean important information. (N.B.: I have never corroborated this, but the voice sounds very much like that of Ruskin's.)

Sam, nice avatar. I own two copies of that album. (No, not the original--but some very good copies. How I wish I owned an original!) I own around 250 Beatles LPs, and an original "Butcher" is not among them. But I do own an original Frank Ifield and the Beatles, which is a gem.

She doesn't yet know that they actually get married. We will be watching that one tonight. When we started watching the show, she stumbled on Terry Farrel's IMDB page and read that Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Dax dies. I told her that she doesn't know when Dax dies - it could be the last episode - or the next one. When Dax and Worf said they were getting married, she was very excited. I said "Well, they will, you know, if they make it..."
I wouldn't even let her see the episode title for the next one (You Are Cordially Invited...) since I didn't want to ruin the suspense.

It's fun how into the show she has gotten. When the female Founder lead Odo astray in the early 6th season, she said to me "I hate that changeling bitch!"

Scott, I don't have a butcher cover either, despite having many vinyl Beatles LPs. Still, I find that photo iconic -- which is strange for something that was never released!

I started back after taking a big pause when the fall season started. I can't remember the title right now, but I most recently finished the episode after His Way.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

I found a site with all the horrible, worse than crap-quality Quicktime trailers Paramount originally had on their Star Trek site for all the episodes. Despite how they look, seeing them again is nostalgic and I'm jumping back into this series soon.

Sam,

Have you had a chance to see the special features to Lost (I think it's Season Two), where they mention that album, and their original idea (which was not allowed) for having Charlie and his band dressed in diapers walking across Abbey Road? Had it been allowed, it would have replaced the play-pen segment that made the cut. The references to the Beatles in this show are interesting.

I think that that one is The Reckoning, unless I have the air date order mixed up.

Tonight, we will be watching You Are Cordially Invited.... So much for the small wedding that Capt. Sisko wanted.

Another of my favorites from this season is Chrysalis. When I first saw this episode years ago, I had to take down in manuscript the "Do-Re-Mi Do-Re-Mi" polyphony that is heard in the episode. It's quite an imaginative little ditty, and it works very nicely.

Re: Deep Space Nine: For the Fans

In my "DS9 movie trilogy" fantasy, a small part involved the idea that things didn't work out between Julian and Ezri, and Sarina came back into his life.
