Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

I have the April 06 stamp of the 60" XBR1 and just started getting a bright green line down the right of my tv about a month ago. On another forum, there is already an extensive amount of talk regarding the high amount of Sony XBR1 owners who have this problem. But I've not seen much discussion of it over here.

Has anyone had to have their Optical Block replaced over here? Mine is scheduled for next week, but I thought I'd just check in and see if any XBR1 owners (or for that matter...XBR2 and A2000 folks), were having any problems with their sets after about a year of usage.

My green line (and green stain) resides in the upper right hand corner and along the side of the TV (about 8 inches from the right border.)

'Tis a real shame but we'll see how the replacement block helps or hinders. Has anyone else suffered green color irregularities on the XBR line?

Anyway, just curious!

Re: Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

im assuming that the replacement block is the light engine?

Most xbr1 that I have seen have had this problem. I have also seen the fixed units which are also having this problem. Part of the fix that Sony is doing it to make the image extremely blue which will help to hide the defect.

Best of luck!

yeah, the light engine. Boy, I hope when I get my replacement that it's all better. But I sure know a bunch of people that have gotten the engine replaced more than 2-3x! Well...maybe I can get an upgrade. sigh.

Re: Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

Hi Jason.

I have an XBR1 with BAD blob. I've had 2 OBs replaced. It's been in the shop 5 times since October 2006. The tv is now much worse since the replacement. I'm 1 of 23 named as primary Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit against Sony. My tv shows the green/yellow blobs in light colors as well as the darker colors. Additionally, the tv is excessively posertized. The picture is worse than any television I've ever owned - including standard definition tube televisions. Mine didn't show symtoms for the first few months. It's been a steep downhill slide ever since. You can view a few of my tv's pics at my yahoo profile under kewadinbob. Being totally sick & tired of not having a functioning television - and waisting time leaving work for hours at a time to wait for the tv to picked-up/dropped-off by the repair shop, I agreed to give Sony $500 to upgrade to the new XBR2. I hear - and pray - that it does not have the sam problems as the totally-useless XBR1. When they work they are absolutely spectacular! -Bob

Re: Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

Are the XBR1's the only sets having this problem or do the A2000's and XBR2's have it as well? Is it something that has been remedied in newer versions of the TV's or might the Sony's being produced now have the same problem? I'm thinking about getting the 60" A2000 so any info would be appreciated.

Re: Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

From what I've read, the occurence of the green blob on the XBR2 and A2000 models is much less than on the XBR1 model.

My friend has a XBR1, and it's got the green blob problem, makes me sad when I see it. I told him to try to get it fixed under warranty, but he's a bit lazy on this issue for some reason...

Re: Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

Regarding the A2000 series and XBR2s - the A2000s seem (from what I've read in blogs) to have the problem, but to a much lesser extent and less often. That is backed-up by the fact that the class action suit only covers the XBR1s.

Regarding the XBR2s, I have heard nothing to confirm that they also have the green blob problem. The problem with the green blob syndrome is that it doesn't show it's ugly head for months (depending on usage). The XBR2s haven't been around long enough to fully-confirm whether or not they, too, have the problem and, if so, to the same extent as the XBR1s. I've been a huge Sony fan all my adult life, but I would definately advise against them now. I tried very hard to get Sony to just buy the XBR1 back from me, but they refused. I was left with limited choices, so I chose to pay Sony an extra $500 to get rid of my XBR1 and get the XBR2. I pray I'm not throwing good money after bad. But, for me, I felt I had no other choice.

Bottom line is that Sony knows they have the problem with the XBR1s yet continue to treat those who call-in with the problem differently. Depending on your attitude, who you speak with at Sony, and how persistent you are, you get different results from Sony. They sold the XB$1 to me knowing that XBR1s had this problem - and I've suffered for months because of it. How can I or anyone else ever trust that Sony won't do the same to them over a different product? They just aren't trustworthy.

Re: Sony XBR1 Green blob or green lines

I mentioned this in another thread but thought I would post it here as well as an FYI...

Sony Class Action | Home

The suit on first generation SXRD has been settled. For those who have an XBR1 or same generation SXRD, you might be able to get a new TV. It has been done apparently.

Second generation SXRD (XBR2 or same generation) suit is still pending. Meanwhile, if you have a problem with the optical block, they will replace free of charge. Next week they are coming to do this for my TV (my XBR2). I will not sign any waiver if offered because if this suit is settled in the customer's favor, I might be able to get a new TV out of it (for a minor additonal charge). If you have a second generation SXRD TV and are having these discoloration problems, I suggest you contact the lawyer to lend yourself as a witness to strengthen the case. And contact Sony for a repair.
