Windows Vista: How to get rid of dual-boot screen at startup?

Thread Starter
The title says it all!

I just upgraded from WinXP to Vista Premium UPGRADE.

I thought I told the software to do a fresh install rather than saving
any former settings.

Perhaps I made the wrong selection.

In any event, I'm tired of having to boot up the computer and
select VISTA or FORMER OPERATING SYSTEM.

Any way I can configure my computer to bypass that choice
screen and go directly to Vista?

Would appreciate the assistance!

Ron:
I believe that info is kept in the boot.ini file.
Try accessing it by: Start-> Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Startup and Recovery Settings -> from here you can make the necessary changes to remove what you want.
Google boot.ini and you should get more info than I can muster.

P.S. this is how it worked on XP, I have no idea if this changed in Vista.

P.S.S. i did some more snooping around and it looks like start-> run -> 'msconfig' will get you there too

Re: Windows Vista: How to get rid of dual-boot screen at startup?

Unless you had it format the hard drive during the install, by telling it to do a fresh install you installed Vista to a new directory which makes it an independent clean version of Windows Vista...not an upgrade. XP is still there.

There is no boot.ini file in Vista. It uses a new type of store called a BCD...boot configuration data. It is editable, but I've never done it directly and I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

What I would do is edit the boot order from within Windows and set the delay time to zero seconds.
  • Right click "Computer" (formerly My Computer) and choose Properties
  • Switch to the Advanced tab
  • Click on Startup and Recovery-Settings
  • Make sure Windows Vista is chosen as the default operating system.
  • Change the "Time to display list of operating systems:" setting to zero.

Good advice. That's exactly how to do it.
