One of the Most Beloved Sports Movies Ever Filmed

THE NATURAL: DIRECTOR’S CUT

10 BONUS FEATURETTES INCLUDE ALL-NEW INTERVIEWS
WITH ROBERT REDFORD AND GLENN CLOSE

~ Two-Disc DVD Debuts April 3 ~

CULVER CITY, CALIF. (January 22, 2007) – Director Barry Levinson restores 15 minutes of never-before-seen footage for The Natural: Director’s Cut, debuting on DVD April 3 in a two-disc collector’s set from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. "I was able to not just simply add a few more scenes to the Director's Cut, but to actually re-cut the first act as it was originally conceived,” said Levinson. “This version is much closer to what I envisioned and it was fantastic to finally bring it to fruition."

The critically-acclaimed, international box-office hit also has new color mastering by the Oscar® nominated Director of Photography Caleb Deschanel. The film, starring Robert Redford, was nominated for numerous awards, including four Academy Award® nominations: Best Supporting Actress (Glenn Close), Best Cinematography, Best Original Score and Best Art Direction, as well as a Golden Globe® nomination for Kim Basinger as Best Supporting Actress.

In addition to the added footage, the bonus materials for The Natural: Director’s Cut contain more than 10 featurettes, which include new interviews with Robert Redford and Glenn Close, as well as professionals from the sports broadcasting and baseball worlds. The featurettes consist of the four-part documentary Extra Innings, the three-part “making of” documentary When Lightning Strikes, A Natural Gunned Down: The Stalking of Eddie Waitkus, Clubhouse Conversations, Knights in Shining Armor: The Mythology of “The Natural,” and a video introduction by director Barry Levinson. This must-own DVD for all baseball fans will be available for $24.94 SRP.

Directed by five-time Academy Award nominee Levinson (winning Best Director for Rain Man, 1989), The Natural spins the magical tale of an unknown middle-aged batter named Roy Hobbs (Redford) who appears out of nowhere to take a losing 1930s baseball team to the top of the league in this sports fantasy. With the aid of a bat hewn from a lightning struck tree, Hobbs experiences the fame he should have had earlier when, as a rising pitcher, he was inexplicably shot by a young woman. In addition to Academy Award winner Redford (Best Director, Ordinary People, 1981), the exceptional cast includes five-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close (The Big Chill, Fatal Attraction), Academy Award winner Kim Basinger (Best Supporting Actress, L.A. Confidential, 1998), Wilford Brimley (Cocoon), Academy Award nominee Barbara Hershey (Best Supporting Actress, Portrait of a Lady, 1996), Robert Prosky (Mrs. Doubtfire), two-time Academy Award nominee Richard Farnsworth (Comes a Horseman, The Straight Story), Joe Don Baker (Walking Tall, Tomorrow Never Dies), and Michael Madsen (Kill Bill).

The Natural (Director's Cut)

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Natural: Director's Cut

So conflicted. I've been holding out on buying this for years expecting to some day be rewarded w/ a special edition (never expected a new cut though). Hopefully this new cut is an improvement and not an Apoc. Now Redux situation, particularly since this version does not appear to come with the original cut.

The conflict is that I now don't know if I should pick it up or wait until I get into the HD arena. I caught this on HDNet last week, and it looked good, but not so special that I would think a well mastered standard def couldn't shine too.

Does this one end with Roy failing to triumph at the end, as in the book? That I'd like to see...

I doubt it, it says he recut the first act so I imagine most of the changes are in the beginning. I really can't imagine the end would change, it wouldn't be all that entertaining.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Natural: Director's Cut

I was only kidding. The changed ending pretty much guts the purpose and intent of the book, rendering it a harmless Hollywood fantasy. The younger Redford would never have stood for it, but I guess he wanted to "play ball." Fans of the film really should read Bernard Malamud's book, which is excellent.

The discussion of the book's ending should REALLY have spoiler tags.

To this day I'm amazed at the way the movie takes the exact opposite route.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Natural: Director's Cut

Did y'all hear that Rhett walks out on Scarlett at the end of GONE WITH THE WIND? Seriously; the book is decades old, and the deviation from its climax in the film was widely discussed and is widely known. That cat's been out of the bag for about 25 years. [I'll be interested to see what, if anything, they say about it in the supplements.] I think it was John Updike who said there was no use complaining about it, as when you take Hollywood's money you've already sold your child into bondage.

And, anyway, for as much as the film distorts it, the beauty of the book is its language. That you cannot spoil.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Natural: Director's Cut

Having never read the book, Barry Levinson's The Natural is one of, if not my favorite sports film. I like happy endings. If I want to invest my time and attention to a story that doesn't end well, I'll read a Russian novel.

The first act of The Natural always seemed a little disjointed. I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out now. The featurettes look to be interesting as well. Barry Levinson is one of my favorite directors and I always enjoy insight into his work.

That being said, for now, this is a rental and not a purchase. I won’t be buying anything like this until the HD format war is concluded.

Re: SPHE Press Release: The Natural: Director's Cut

Ugh... isn't this the third time this has been released on DVD? I thought the LAST version was a special edition, but apparently this one is loaded with more features. I'm guessing this won't include the theatrical version, so I'll have to keep the previous release when I buy this one.

SHHHHH! Bob, you're missing the point. We're not supposed to be that old. . .
