Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

According to this thread at:

http://www.animationshow.com/forums/...showtopic=3091

Woody Woodpecker, the Universal Oswalds, and the Tex Avery Woody Woodpeckers are all coming to dvd this summer. This coming from Jerry Beck. The thread provides a link to an interview he did on the 26th. I have not listened to the interview myself, so I can only report this as a rumor for now. And I don't exactly know all of the details.

I hope this turns out to be true. Let the speculation begin.

Praise be. That is a lot but I would wonder if Andy Panda, Chilly Willy and a handful of others could hitch a ride.

I just looked over at the GAC and a description is there:

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

Tex Avery did not work on Woody Woodpecker Cartoons. He was only involved with four of their toons before moving on:

Sh-h-h-h-h-h (1955)
The Legend of Rockabye Point (1955)
I'm Cold (1954)
Crazy Mixed Up Pup (1954)

My guess, then, is that if his name is mentioned within this announcement for the summer, all four of these cartoons will be included. Bravo. Universal seems to be waking up after a long-g-g slumber.

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

Well, according to what I read as being stated, it will be the first 45 Woody Woodpeckers, the 4 Tex Avery's and about 26 more shorts featuring the likes of Oswald, Pooch the Pup and Swing Symphony. A Volume 1 that would satisfy if it were the only volume to ever be released.

I'm hoping Universal will take after Disney by including the "banned" cartoons. If you want a really good shock, see Scrub Me Mama With a Boogie Beat. It makes Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs look like Crash.

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

I saw Scrub Me Mamma on the Johnny Legend Presents the Complete Weird cartoons, far from complete and not too pretty but I liked what I saw and would not mind a better quality version in this set. I always felt that that short was about airing the dirty laundry of the past so as to move pass it but that was a personal perspective that I find others not to share.

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

This is great news!!

Now if we can get Paramount to release "Betty Boop" & WB to release the complete Tex Avery MGM cartoons, the bulk of classic animation will be in process.

I think that would leave the Columbia/Screen Gems and the Terrytoons as the big holes in a classic cartoon collection. What are the odds of getting those released?

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

From what I remember reading over at the animation show some time ago, not very likely but you never know. Hopefully Woody will show that some of these popular cartoon characters that have been poorly handled in the past still have some selling power.

On a similar note, Thunderbean Animation is about to release the Complete Little King and a second volume of Cultoons.

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

One of my all time favorite Tex Avery cartoons was "Crazy Mixed-Up-Pup". The premise involves a man walking his dog being hit by a car. The paramedics get the "plasma" and "dog plasma" mixed up, and the dog and owner gradually start behaving more like their counterparts. I would buy the set for this cartoon alone if it is included, and it looks like it will be.

Regards,

I don't remember where, but I remember reading about a set of Terrytoons being released. I'll have to keep a lookout.

Re: Woody Woodpecker coming this summer?!?!

I had bought one of the Columbia House Woody's off ebay, and thoroughly enjoyed it. The one disc cost me $50.00, and it makes me wonder what the hell is wrong with me for spending that kind of money on one DVD.

But then I remembered why. Its because I love Woody Woodpecker, and hadn't seen his cartoons since I was a kid, and fifty dollars is a small price to pay to have some of that magic back.

It was slim pickin's, however, because the disc only contained about four Woody cartoons - the rest was filler of other characters from the Lantz vault, which I don't like half as much as Woody himself.

If the first 45 Woody cartoons come out this summer - along with the old Popeyes - I'm going to be a very happy man. Sitting in my basement family room, with the central air blowing, a glass of iced tea in my hand, my remote control in my hand, and Woody Woodpecker in my DVD player.

Heaven.
