We've just finished the re-mastering of The Secret of NIMH for HD DVD. We're told that the new color master will be made available at full screen 1:1.33 (as it was shot), 1:1.85 letterbox (as it was projected in theaters in 1982)and 16X9 HD for the new high definition systems for home theater. We have done a producer/director commentary and an on-camera interview to go out as extras. Hopefully that will be the case. We believe that the new HD DVD will be available in June/July of this year.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for HD-DVD

I assume that means we'll be getting a new standard dvd too.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for HD-DVD

Isn't the movie produced by MGM? That would mean it would be blu-ray, right? Maybe I'm wrong.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for HD-DVD

MGM is distributed by Fox, so yes, it would be a Blu-Ray edition.

Which makes it hard for me to resist a player.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for HD-DVD

Yep, this'll be BD. Scroll down further on the page and you'll see that the site mentions it will be released by MGM through 20th Century Fox. Yet another reason why I wish Warner, instead of Sony, had been successful in bidding on MGM.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for HD-DVD

Moving this to HT Software (Hi-def) and changing the title to reflect Blu-Ray rather than hd-dvd.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Why would he continually say HD DVD though?? I know MGM owns the release(unless something has changed) so why would he continue to mention HD DVD?

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Maybe he doesn't know the difference between the two formats?

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

While the comment suggests the film was shot 1.33:1 and projected 1.85:1, the current DVD was PAN AND SCAN, not open matte.

This is obvious from looking at the chapter menu on the current DVD: One can see image included on the right and left sides of the chapter frames (which appear widescreen) that is absent in the 1.33:1 actual video.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Also the writing in the book in the opening of the film (as per the current DVD) has many of the words & letters cropped-out of the picture.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

This is a rather Bipolar disorder thread. First HD DVD, then Blu Ray. I'm so confused.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

I'll be happy just to finally get an OAR of one of my favorite animated films.

They only release later MGM content (post 1986), Warner does the remainder. Except for MGM/UA films, of which The Secert of Nihm is. THis will make the film a BD only release.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

This was a United Artists release, thus clearly in MGM territory.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Finally OAR!

So is this the first traditionally hand animated title to hit HD-DVD or BD?

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Depends on how soon it hits. If Disney gets a traditional hand-animated feature out before, you'll have your answer, but defintiely one of the first announced.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Definitely great news. I never bought the DVD because it was P&S.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Great news, and hopefully the remaster will be a quality one. The original DVD release has some serious problems in a few scenes (bad transfer?), but I really enjoy the movie so I have it. Can't wait for this one on BD.

The DVD release isn't P&S is it? I didn't notice any digital panning, I thought it was just reformated for 4:3.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Others claim to see cropping. I can't comment because I couldn't bring myself to buy the current DVD.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

I am still hoping there will be a Blu Ray release planned for N.I.M.H., there aren't a huge # of anumated features released on BD yet... so I would defin. take NIMH as well as Watership Down if WB's can do the BD correctly... would be nice not to have these films looking interlaced esp Watership Down.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

No further word on this one? I've been waiting for a decent release of NIMH for years now. I couldn't bring myself to buy the DVD.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

From Don Bluth's website, someone asked about this. Here is the answer, dated 2/20/09:

Reply: Derek, Thank you for writing. Actually, we just refer to high definition as "HD". We re-mastered The Secret of NIMH in HD Blu-Ray. I would predict that MGM/UA will release that Blu-Ray version within the next 18 months through Fox Home Entertainment, or maybe by then they will have their own home distribution team put back together again.

Let's hope we see it soon!

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Let's hope so. I still have the previous letterbox copy (it looks decent on a standard television) and I don't want to upgrade unless it's the Blu-Ray.

Re: The Secret of NIMH remastered for Blu-Ray

Same here, Brian.

Great news, looking forward to it!

Just looked at the upcomming releases on BD and I don't see NIMH on any of the lists. How does one contact MGM/UA or Fox Home? I will buy TWO of these copies if they ever get it out there and that is a promise!

I watch my favorite animated film (NIMH) every year during the first vacation I take.  My first is next week.  I'll get to watch a shiny DVD upconverted on my Blu Ray player and ask myself "why?".  It's got "DISNEY" written on it.  Does that ring any bells?   DISNEY on BD sound like a good idea?  Pair if off with JUNGLE BOOK?  Hum...could you?  Would you?

What kind of vaction? I would love to see it in it's original form and a cleaned-up enhanced version. I really want this movie in a case with original artwork and the usual commentary, original trailer. Maybe a few interviews. "I will say this," the cartoony artwork of the last dvd release does appeal to the much much younger crowd. However, this crowd would not understand the movie even in the slightest of way.

I noticed one of my HD channels on DTV was promoting this film as a family film, meaning kids gather round and watch.  It's been a long time since I've seen this film, but this film has a mature subject matter and is not really aimed at kids.  I think the programmer saw animated and assumed "kids."

With MGM releases on hiatus until they are sold it may be a while still before this release.

Rob Roy( Liam Neeson) has just been released in Australia this week so some titles are getting out.
A quick look  at a friend's copy shows it looks and sounds very good. A very under rated film IMO.
