A friend of mine asked me if there were plans for Carpenter putting out a deluxe Escape from L.A. DVD. I didnt know, since while I kind of enjoyed the movie - it didnt register on my radar enough to keep an eye out for the DVD. So I'll here - anyone know anything? Or should he just go ahead and get the current release?

The current version is dirt cheap so I'd go for that. I can't see Paramount double-dipping on this when the movie tanked and their catalog output seems to slowing down to a crawl.

Even though it is more easy to watch these days, I would love to see an SE of this film since I'm a JC fan.

I love this movie and it one of my most wanted re-releases. Carpenter and Russell commentaries are great. It has been playing in HD on Movie Pix so Paramount does have a new transfer. Maybe Paramount will cash in his appearence in Grindhouse and release a new dvd (and HD-DVD too please).

Count me as another fan. I'm not holding my breath for one but I'd buy a special edition in a heartbeat. It's a fun movie that plays out like a deja-vu version of the first one but flavored with the phoniness of L.A. That shot-clock sequence rules and it has one of the best endings ever.

Love it. I'd buy it again.

The movie has grown on me over the years (I despised it the first time I saw it) and I agree that the ending is really great...."Welcome to the human race...."

I never understood why more fans of the original didn't enjoy Escape From L.A. when it was first released but it looks like it's following the same pattern as many other John Carpenter movies- maligned when released and revisited after about ten years.

Yes but generally speaking this is the only John Carpenter film I didn't like from the start....I guess I wasn't ready for a flat out satire/comedy.

If only the music had been closer to the original. Snake Plissken without that cold synthesizer is like Bond or Superman without their themes. I know they had to bring it up to date blah blah, but I thought the point was that Snake doesn't change. His music shouldn't either.

Always a guilty pleasure of mine, love the satire, and the ending always gives me a little chill

If you have the capability, choose the R2 PAL disc of this. The 16:9 enhancement greatly improves on the recycled laserdisc transfer found in R1.

Cool - I believe that my friend still has a region free player, so I'll point him in that direction then.

I haven't seen this in ages...I remember seeing it opening weekend and having a blast. Thanks for the thread, and reminding me of the movie - I'll have to go out and get a copy now, I'd love to see it again.
