New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

Movies Unlimited is listing the following MGM/UA titles (Probably thanks to Fox: Frank Borzage's CHINA DOLL, Andre DeToth's PLAY DIRTY, Roger Corman's VON RICHTOFEN AND BROWN on 4/24. Robert Altman's THIEVES LIKE US (with Altman commentary portaled over from LD; This is a remake of the forthcoming THEY LIVE BY NIGHT in the next WB Noir set) and Mike Hodges' PULP on 4/24. I suspect that these are courtesy of Fox. Can "The David Lean and Alfred Hitchcock Collections" be far behind? And KID MILLIONS and PAPER LION?

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

Really happy to see "Thieves" there...hope its true!

This does seem an almost random assortment of oddities. How do they choose what gets released? With a dartboard?

Saying that, I wouldn't hold my breath for the Lean, sad to say. "Paper Lion" would seem to fit in with this randomness though.

Play Dirty on DVD?! Brilliant amoral war film!

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

Haven't seen VON RICHTHOFFEN AND BROWN since it was first released in the early 70's. I would not have guessed that it was coming up for release, but am really glad to see it coming.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

Pulp, Play Dirty & Thieves Like Us have already been released by MGM in other regions which may be why they were chosen.

I'm so happy to see all of these getting a release!

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

For me, the real news here is China Doll - I wasn't sure we'd ever see this on DVD!

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

China Doll?! Finally a little more Borzage on DVD. But will we ever see his beautiful Seventh Heaven? It's a shame the major studios are so averse to releasing their silent films on DVD.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

I'll definitely be Netflixing THIEVES LIKE US, one of the last Altman movies that (I believe) isn't on DVD and haven't seen yet.

Now, if MGM could give us that MISERY special edition and an official release of HICKEY & BOGGS, I'd be very happy.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

The BFI listed it was going to release a trio of Borzage silents including: Seventh Heaven, Lucky Star, and Street Angel. I first read about this in their Autumn 04 catalog and the last I heard was that they were aiming for summer 06 - I wonder what their status is now.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

7TH HEAVEN was recently released in Spain (R2). I'm tempted to order it, but I don't know whether Spanish subtitles are removable. (I'd guess that they are.) Has anyone seen it?

Actually, there are still more than a few Altman's that are still AWOL in Region 1, most notably "Countdown" , "Brewster McCloud" and "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial"

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

This sound good but they are still not up to the pre-takeover number of releases per month with regards to the classics. Hopefully they will be pumping more out. I would like Sergeants 3, Call Me Bwana, Toys in the Attic, The Best Man, Fitzwilly,Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell, The Night They Raided Minsky's , If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium, The Devil's Disciple among others from UA

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

FITZWILLY and IF IT'S TUESDAY, THIS MUST BE BELGIUM are two of my most-wanted titles on DVD. Love the hell out of those two undeservedly obscure gems. The OOP VHS of the former is cropped scope and looks absolutely horrible. I've got the latter DVD-R'd from cable letterboxed, but would instantly buy a proper DVD.

I'd definitely buy 'The Best Man' if they released it - one of the best and most intelligent political films ever made, and ahead of its time. A DVD is long overdue.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

I'm still waiting for MGM to release a widescreen version of "Child's Play". This is the only reason I haven't purchased the sequels.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

Is Fox actually calling the shots on the MGM/UA titles? If so, they certainly have enough titles for a a new film noir series (WITNESS TO MURDER, CRIME IN THE STREETS, A KILLER IS LOOSE, HE RAN ALL THE WAY, THE BIG NIGHT, THE PROWLER, SLEEP, MY LOVE, VICE SQUAD, 99 RIVER STREET), and a RObert Mitchum boxset anchored by THE NIGHT OF THE HUNTER: SE (FOREIGN INTERLUDE, NOT AS A STRANGER, MAN WITH THE GUN, BANDIDO,
THE WONDERFUL COUNTRY, NIGHT FIGHTERS, THE LAST TIME I SAW ARCHIE, TWO FOR THE SEESAW, MISTER MOSES, THE WAY WEST, YOUNG BILLY YOUNG, and an upgraded THUNDER ROAD).

The Caine Mutiny Court Martial had a legit R1 release by Lionsgate in Canada, 4 or 5 years back. It was a cheapo disc - I bought mine for $5.99 CDN - but it was hard for them to screw-up too badly since the film was made-for-TV to begin with.

I recently gave away my copy to a local specialty video store, but there's at least one copy on ebay right now for $20.

Re: New MGM/UA Catalog Titles

Looks like another classic release for April The Pride of the Yankees's 65 Anniversary edition (I do not have any specs this could even just be a re-issue).

"Woman OF Straw"
