Several questions regarding different releases - Flaming Lips & Jimi Hendrix - Guitar

Rather than make 3 posts I figured I'd do one.

First off the Flaming Lips DVD-A's, they any good? I don't know any songs from the band that I would recognize as being from them. BB had 2 of them and almost picked them up but didn't want to drop $20 on unknown material. What kind of sound are they?

Second, are there any GOOD releases of Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced? We bought a supposed "remaster of the originals" that sounds ok but its original alright, right down to a hellacious hiss from the left channel on Purple Haze.

Some tracks are better than others and the recording actually is good if it were not for the hiss.

Third and lastly can someone recommend some good guitar CD's. Classic, acoustic, jazz, etc...something high quality in different genre's. We picked up Fingerprints from Peter Framptom and its a good CD but a bit compressed.

We like pretty much anything and everything so no suggestion I don't think would be out of line.

Thanks

I assume one of these Flaming Lips discs was Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots? I have this one and love the album, but I can't really give you an opinion on the DVD A layer as I've never listened to it. I only have SACD at the moment.

As far as their sound, think Pink Floyd with animal costumes and balloons. Their website has a number of videos (under the video tab) from this set, notably Flight Test, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and Do You Realize. These videos are also on the disk.

Kurt-Do yourself a favor and listen to the 5.1 mix. One of the wildest mixes I have ever heard, I really like it.

Eric-I bought the first DVD-A (Yoshimi), sound unheard and really liked it. I just picked up the 3rd one (AWWTM) last week and like that a lot also. You have to listen to the 5.1 mixes, I think they are incredible. I wasn't too much into the music in Soft Bulletin, so that would be my least favorite.

I have all three Flaming Lips DVD-A's. Silly novelty music in my opinion, certainly not rock but it is unique and the surround mixes are fun demo material. They are certainly internet darlings, but you must be able to handle a lead singer that sings off-key. I assume he does it on purpose, but fans think the poor singing is great.

I'm big on the lips. I don't have DVD-A, but the "At War With The Mystics" disk sounds great in DD 5.1. I plan on picking up both Yoshimi and "Soft bulletine (my favorite album buy them) on DVD.

The "Soft Bulletin" DVD-A is the worst one in terms of fidelity, but it isn't bad really, just nowhere near as good as the other two.

Anything by Steve Morse or Steve Howe.

Re: Several questions regarding different releases - Flaming Lips & Jimi Hendrix - Gu

Jeff, thanks for reminding me of the 5.1 mix on Yoshimi. I still have to listen to that on DVD-A one of these days, my parents have a player.

Eric, as far as guitar music goes, a few suggestions:

1. Robert Cray - Strong Persuader. Good Rock/Blues mix. If you want a primer on Cray, look up the Old Love video on YouTube that he did with Eric Clapton. Great stuff.

2. Stevie Ray Vaughn - Anything. Hard blues. There are a few single layer SACD's out there. I've been meaning to pick them up, but I hate single layer stuff...

3. Frank Zappa - Say what you want about FZ, but he knew what to do when you handed him a guitar. A good starting point is Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, but it has none of his famous lyrics (good or bad depending upon your viewpoint). He does some great work on a number of his albums, but you have to know where to look. He's very creative and has a great raw sound. Some of his albums also feature people like Steve Vai, who also isn't half bad .

I was just going to suggest Zappa. He always seems to play the more ugly notes in his solos, which makes them refreshing. And when he hits the pretty ones, they knock your socks off.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I should have been a bit more specific. I'm looking for more acoustical listening on the guitar side.

Still I'll pick up a few of those and try them out.

Any idea on Hendrix, thats what I'd really like to get in a high quality recording.

Re: Several questions regarding different releases - Flaming Lips & Jimi Hendrix - Guitar

Acoustic guitar -- there's a CD by a guy named Bernd Steidl (IIRC) which is basically what Yngwie Malmsteen playing an acoustic guitar would sound like. It wasn't the greatest idea (acoustic guitars just don't sound right at that speed -- the notes have no body), but it's kind of amusing.

I have no idea why I just thought of him.

I didn't know this was available in SACD. I only thought it was offered in DVD-A which is what I have.

You are correct. I have it on DVD-A, but I don't have a DVD-A player, only an SACD player.
