Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

Not too crazy about that cover art.

Before we get into the aspect ratio debate, let me tell you that when the Library of Congress screened this film in 2005 as part of their cat film series, they used an original IB Technicolor print, and screened it at a weird ratio. They claimed the print itself was matted, but the projectionist showed it at what looked like 2:1, and it was definitely overmatted.

I agree. The characters should at least be rendered in the same style in which they were drawn for the film. Those cats on the cover look much more three-dimensional than they do in the film.

And, Thomas O'Malley cat looks a little "off" to me. Maybe its just the color...

Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't like the attempts at faux-depth rendering of 2-dimensional characters.

How typical. They WOULD wait until I bought the original release...

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

But with 2 discs, and the way they've been going with extras on non-Platinums, it's possible they could do a widescreen/fullscreen combo.

Just tried the link cited at the bottom of the insert pictured in Post #1:

aristocatsdvd.com

Doesn't work. Release date is only a couple of months away.

I've always hated that. The characters on Disney video cover art haven't looked like they look in the films for at least 20 years. There are longstanding bad habits/traditions entrenched in the product art department (or whatever it's called) that I really wish would be shaken up.

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

MY guess is that this'll wind up in 1.78:1, given that it's a "new digital transfer", and that previous experience tells me this was meant to be projected 1.75:1.

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

As you might have already expected, The Aristocats: 2-Disc Special Edition will not be making the March 27th release date announced in an insert inside Cinderella III. BVHE has yet to set a new date, but a spring release is still possible. The DVD's first video preview will be found on Peter Pan: Platinum Edition next month.

from ultimatedisney.com

well that's dissapointing

The site is up, but the release date has been delayed and some people are reporting that they never got the leaflet in the Cinderella III DVD, while some people did

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

I always thought the release date was too close to both Cinderella III and Peter Pan. I'd betting this will be a late spring/early summer release.

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

At least the delay is not so they can think of an inane "edition" name for the disc.

In case you were wondering, Disney just pulled the plug on "Aristocats 2".

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

From UltimateDisney.com:

Quote:
Members of the UD Forum have noticed that Disney has quietly removed "2-Disc" references on the official site for the indefinitely-delayed The Aristocats: Special Edition. The changes suggest a repeat of what occurred with the October 2005 re-release of Tarzan, which ended up a sparse single disc after months of being promoted as a dual-platter set.

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

Maybe Disney is worried about the reaction to the way black cats are portrayed in the film?

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

The Aristocats Special Edition DVD, originally scheduled for a March 2007 release, is being delayed until Spring 2008. The good news is that the reason this is delayed is so Disney can add new, never before seen bonus features. The objective, of course, is to enhance the DVD and include more content for our consumers. We apologize for any disappointment this delay may have caused you, but hope you will enjoy this special edition release when it arrives in stores.

Well that's good news I think
If only Disney did this with Robin Hood and The Fox and the Hound, although with The Aristocats out of the picture that means only The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and The Jungle Book are left for 2007, surely there must be more? Here's hoping for The Hunchback of Notre Dame and/or Hercules

^ I guess it's too much to ever hope for a two disc Lilo and Stitch or Treasure Planet...even an SE of The Black Cauldron or The Rescuers.

I have a Louis Armstrong LP from 1968 on Disney's Buena Vista label called "Disney Songs the Satchmo Way" and inside the fold-out cover it mentions that Armstrong would be participating in THE ARISTOCATS. There's even a sketch of the "Satchmo the Cat" character he would be voicing.

It's not exactly clear from the text whether he'd already done his recordings at that point or not. But if those recordings still exist, they'd sure make a nice bonus feature!

Aristocats has always been my least favorite of the "classic" Disney animated films, and in fact, is the only one of the classics I don't own (ones made in the last decade aren't "classics", regardless of what Disney says!). However, given the presentation that they are apparently working on, I think this is great news, and I plan on buying this when it does come out.

Hopefully, The Black Cauldron will get a decent release soon too.

Re: The Aristocats 2-Disc SE - March 27th

I agree that this is great news. However, if you were to ask me what my least favourite Disney "Classics" are, they would be The Fox and the Hound and Oliver and Company. What dreck.
