2 things:

1/ When you install DVD Profiler, you're in front of a blank database. It will take some time before it takes shape. You'll probably have to dig the manual a little. I'm sure that 50% of the persons who install DVD Profiler won't go very far and give up after a while. It was my case...
With my program, it's untertaining from the very first minute. First thing you'll do naturally, is browse the movie database. Then you'll rate movies and persons, and by doing so you'll enter another dimension: at first glance, you'll know if a person was involved in movies you liked or movies you disliked, you'll see if a movie has actors that you like or not. And at last, you'll input your collection.

2/ Most people are interested in movies (we've all seen thousands movies, we all have favorite actors), but most people have less than 50 DVD. Seriously, you don't need DVD Profiler if you only have 50 DVD. Well, using my program makes sense even if you don't have any DVD at all. My program is for ALL movie lovers, not just DVD collectors.
Managing your silver discs could almost be considered as an extra. What's the most important ? Your tiny little possessions ? Or your cinematographical culture and tastes ? LOL

I am assuming the main difference is navigation and of course esthetics.
Well, I really envy their online service, so your friends can see your collection. I hope to add this feature in a not too distant future.

When I said that I doubted you would make the switch, it's because you're satisfied with DVD Profiler, and you have already inputed all your collection. When I look for persons to use my program, I mainly think of persons who've never had any interest for collection managers before. Anyway, I confess that I secretly hope that one day you'll feel compelled to make the move. Especially since DVD Profiler hasn't been maintained for more than a year now, and Intervocative despise their users (is Ken alive ? LOL).

The key is to setup a front end for each client and a back end (which resides on the network) with all the tables. If you try to share one database over a network that's when you run into problems.

Yes. I think a runtime version could be installed, but I've never tried it.

That would great Hector. No, I wouldn't use it for anything but personal use.

Re: Coollector: new FREEWARE for movie lovers

Is it suppose to beep everytime I click something? I don't like that much. I was shocked that cduniverse does not carry some R1 titles I own like Half-shot at Sunrise. It seems that some triple feature discs like Here Comes Cookie / Love in Bloom / Six of a Kind are split up into individual entries but have no data beyond year and title. Meanwhile some boxsets like the Preston Sturges Collection and Looney Tunes Golden Collections are neither listed as whole nor as seperates. It would be nice to search for actor and also enter the full title or a part of a title without your word being cut off.

This is not to say this is unpleasant and I look forward to future updates. Hopefully some films not yet on DVD will wind up listed.

Re: Coollector: new FREEWARE for movie lovers

Hi Tori,

The beep sound is absolutely abnormal. There should only be a click sound when you click a button. Right now, I have no clue what's happening to you... Please give me more details. What is your system ? When precisely does it beep ?

Don't be shocked, Half-shot at Sunrise (1930) is in the database. The string search is about letters only (punctuations are discarded). You had to enter "half" and then "shot", and forget about the "-".

About "Here Comes Cookie / Love in Bloom / Six of a Kind", CDuniverse doesn't give any information. The years I even had to find myself. When I'll have my own encyclopedia, it will be possible to fill all the gaps.

CDuniverse has only 1 Preston Sturges Collection, it's "Preston Sturges: The Filmmaker Collection", a 10-pack you'll find easily by looking at Preston Sturges' filmography.

CDuniverse has "Looney Tunes Golden Collections" but I did not put it in this catalog, because it's a catalog of movies. I will put it in the catalog of series.

It's possible to search by actor: you simply missed the "panel focus", which is probably the only tricky thing about Coollector. It's explained at the beginning of the help file: the panel with the focus is the panel with the red corners. You can give a panel the focus by clicking on it (where it is possible) or, even better, by using the left or right arrow keys.

??? I don't understand.

Thank you very much

Of course there will be updates as soon as possible. The first one will be a little late, but after that it will be updated frequently.

Re: Coollector: new FREEWARE for movie lovers

The beep I get from coolector comes from my computer, not my speaker. This is the same type of beep I get when I turn my computer on. I have never experienced this sound outside of turning the system on. It happens anytime I click buttons like add, cancel, the buttons down the center like + and ?.

About Half-Shot, after the - didn't take, I searched for Hook Line & Sinker and then clicked the actor Bert Wheeler. Half Shot had no actor listings so from both of those occurences I wrongfully concluded it was not yet in.

About Preston, it is the Filmmakers Collection with the following 7 films:

The Great McGinty (1940)
Christmas in July (1940)
The Lady Eve (1941)
Sullivan's Travels (1941)
The Palm Beach Story (1942)
The Great Moment (1944)
Hail the Conquering Hero (1944)

I see now that they are all in but I also see that if I were typing The Palm Beach Story it would not come up but if I type Palm Beach Story it will. Some will be putting the word "the" down when searching for titles like The Thin Man, The Third Man, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I know some places make "The" a phantom word, not counting when typed or appearing before a word but appearing when viewed. If you can do this, then do it also with A and An for films like An Affair to Remember and A Time to Kill.

I was a little disturbed by trying to type a word that is not in the system like Diplomaniacs. Once I get to a point that does not match like Dipiloma, it fills in with the rest of a word in the sytem and will not let me type out the rest of the actual word, giving that beeping noise again. Ultimately this is unimportant as if it is not in there, why bother typing it all out.

Anyways, having listed things elsewhere for a time it might be easier for some just to copy and paste great amounts of properly spelled titles from another list one by one but to paste is not yet allowed in the search field.

When you get around to the Looney Tunes, please do not label them as television series as that will cause a great disturbance here since they are short films.

What kind of Windows are you using ? Is it Vista ? Because your Windows\Media\start.wav file is apparently missing... Could you please check it ?
I've placed a copy on my site: www.coollector.com/start.wav

CDuniverse tends to remove "the" from the titles. Me neither I don't like it, and I intend to keep them when I'll build my database.

Yes the idea was to avoid searching what is not there, and especially to prevent typos. I like a lot my smart completion system. Wasn't easy to do... And pasting would be against the rules, I doubt I will ever add it

Wow ! To me Looney Tunes were just TV cartoon series LOL
I intended to place them in the series catalog, with the genres "animation" and "TV". Is not good ?

These were originally theatrical shorts shown before feature-length films. More recently they have become part of television packages sold to local affiliates, but make no mistake about it...they are theatrical films!

Re: Coollector: new FREEWARE for movie lovers

I apologize to all the purists out there, but the Looney Tunes will be in the series catalog, whatever you might say.

Let me explain: series will be treated quite differently than movies. Episodes will be handled, with individual description for each episode. Seasons will also be handled when it makes sense. Etc...

There will be 1 entry for Bugs Bunny, which will gather all the cartoons with Bugs Bunny in it. In the medias availables, you'll find the Looney Tunes Coollection.

It'd be really bad to have the Looney Tunes in the movies catalog, with as many entries as there are Bugs Bunny cartoons, Speedy Gonzales cartoons, Sylvester & Tweety cartoons, etc...
What a mess it would be !

Re: Coollector: new FREEWARE for movie lovers

What about the Bugs Bunny cartoons with Daffy Duck in them?

Why don't you put the Charlie Chan series of movies under one series and all of those East Side Kids films, and Laurel & Hardy, The Three Stooges, James Bond, Sherock Holmes, Carry On, and Godzilla while you are at it. All films staring Charlie Chaplin will be placed under one series too.

I'm really not a specialist of Looney Tunes, so I can't give you much details. All I know is that it will be in the series database. I surely don't want them in the movies database. I'll organize it the best I can, and I'll listen carefully to your enlighted advices.

The Three Stooges are not in the movies database.

The frontier between movies and series won't be hermetic, though. For instance, the James Bond movies are in the movies database, and they will also be in the series database. Charlie Chaplin's bum character could also be considered as a series, and why not Buster Keaton too. Yet another example: The Dragon Ball Z series has produced a few movies in theater. Those movies are in the movies database, and will also be in the series database, along with the TV episodes, because it's a whole, but TV episodes would just not fit in the movies database...

All this makes sense if you remember the specific way I have told you series will be treated.

To sum it up, the Looney Tunes, though they are short movies, will be in the series database because they'll be much better there.

Re: Coollector: new FREEWARE for movie lovers

I have not had the chance to deal with it yet as I will not be able to use the computer I installed this on until this weekend.

I do not feel that short subjects will be beter in a TV series database but it is your program so do what you will. Might I suggest not labeling them as television but Theatrical Short Subject instead? Still there are plenty of short subjects that do not belong to any series.

I never said that it would be a _TV_ series database. I talked about a series database ! Of course, TV produces most of the series. TV series will have the genre "TV".
I did not place in the movies database the Looney Tunes & Al become it would have created too much mess. On the contrary, they will fit perfectly in the series database. Trust me, it will be much better organized this way.
