The large company or the small business?
I need a place online to host my pictures (right now 3-4 GB and growing). No commercial stuff, it's gotta be my website. I have the gallery software picked out (Coppermine Gallery), registered the domain through godaddy.com, and picked phpwebhosting.com because my friend who runs Coppermine has been with them for a couple of years with no issues whatsoever. I did all this last night, and barring a few hickups (there seems to be a limit on the file size php will handle, gotta modify .htaccess it seems, since they won't let me touch php.ini), everything seems to be fine.
Note that I am very new to all this, 24 hours ago, I had no clue what php, MySQL and even DNS were (yeah I know, I just never had any interest in IT), but I am a fast learner, if I may say so myself
.
Now after discussing the above with another friend, I am kinda second guessing myself: At the surface, 1and1.com (which he recommends) appears to offers a far better deal that my current day-old host. So I just want ask you experts what then is the best option for my needs:
www.phwebphosting.com ($9.95)
and
https://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Ho...op&__lf=Static ($4.95)
I will admit that I liked phpwebhosting at first because of their no nonsense approach to business. Everything was straightforward, I had the site ready to go immediately. I did not feel overwhelmed as a n00b. In contrast, registering a site through godaddy was such an exercise of jumping through a million offers and commercials that I have no interest in doing business with them again, and am wary of such big sites, which 1and1 appears to be.
I guess the main question I have is, are the claims made by the major companies to be believed? Does 100GB web space really mean... 100GB web space? Is there a catch? It certainly sounds better than the 1GB "plus options to increase based on need" that my current host is offering.
I have no need for large amounts of bandwidth, as this is a personal, family and friends gallery. I do need at least 5GB of web space, probably more by year's end. Pictures are 2-4MB each, and I would like to store them at full rez.
Here are the requirements for Coppermine Gallery, which is the main application I am running on the site:
Sorry about the long post, please do help, thanks.

Quote:
| A web server that supports PHP A MySQL database You will need MySQL version 3.23.23 or better. MySQL 4.1 is recommended, MySQL 5 is supported. The MySQL user needs permissions to perform CREATE, ALTER, SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT data from the database. Most users have these permissions when webhosted. If you don't have them, you will not be able to use this or any other pre-made scripts at all. If you are uncertain about your permissions, please check with your webhost. Most hosting services can probably tell you whether coppermine can or cannot be run on their servers. A database needs to be set up that Coppermine can use - the install script will not create a database for you, but it will automatically create the tables and data structure in your database for you. In most webhosted environments, you will already have at least one database set up for you by your webhost. If not, you will need to create one. If you do need to create a database, check with your webhost on the proper procedures for doing so. Write down your database name, userID and password. You will require all three to successfully install Coppermine. PHP (version 4.2.0 or better), either compiled with the support for the GD library or permission to use the exec() function for the ImageMagick "convert" utility in order to make thumbnails and reduced size images. An image library: either GD version 1.x or 2.x (PHP has to be compiled to support it) or ImageMagick. |
