Web Host - Which is the better deal?

The large company or the small business?

I need a place online to host my pictures (right now 3-4 GB and growing). No commercial stuff, it's gotta be my website. I have the gallery software picked out (Coppermine Gallery), registered the domain through godaddy.com, and picked phpwebhosting.com because my friend who runs Coppermine has been with them for a couple of years with no issues whatsoever. I did all this last night, and barring a few hickups (there seems to be a limit on the file size php will handle, gotta modify .htaccess it seems, since they won't let me touch php.ini), everything seems to be fine.

Note that I am very new to all this, 24 hours ago, I had no clue what php, MySQL and even DNS were (yeah I know, I just never had any interest in IT), but I am a fast learner, if I may say so myself .

Now after discussing the above with another friend, I am kinda second guessing myself: At the surface, 1and1.com (which he recommends) appears to offers a far better deal that my current day-old host. So I just want ask you experts what then is the best option for my needs:

www.phwebphosting.com ($9.95)

and
https://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Ho...op&__lf=Static ($4.95)

I will admit that I liked phpwebhosting at first because of their no nonsense approach to business. Everything was straightforward, I had the site ready to go immediately. I did not feel overwhelmed as a n00b. In contrast, registering a site through godaddy was such an exercise of jumping through a million offers and commercials that I have no interest in doing business with them again, and am wary of such big sites, which 1and1 appears to be.

I guess the main question I have is, are the claims made by the major companies to be believed? Does 100GB web space really mean... 100GB web space? Is there a catch? It certainly sounds better than the 1GB "plus options to increase based on need" that my current host is offering.

I have no need for large amounts of bandwidth, as this is a personal, family and friends gallery. I do need at least 5GB of web space, probably more by year's end. Pictures are 2-4MB each, and I would like to store them at full rez.

Here are the requirements for Coppermine Gallery, which is the main application I am running on the site:

Quote:
A web server that supports PHP

A MySQL database

You will need MySQL version 3.23.23 or better. MySQL 4.1 is recommended, MySQL 5 is supported. The MySQL user needs permissions to perform CREATE, ALTER, SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, INSERT data from the database. Most users have these permissions when webhosted. If you don't have them, you will not be able to use this or any other pre-made scripts at all. If you are uncertain about your permissions, please check with your webhost. Most hosting services can probably tell you whether coppermine can or cannot be run on their servers.
A database needs to be set up that Coppermine can use - the install script will not create a database for you, but it will automatically create the tables and data structure in your database for you. In most webhosted environments, you will already have at least one database set up for you by your webhost. If not, you will need to create one. If you do need to create a database, check with your webhost on the proper procedures for doing so. Write down your database name, userID and password. You will require all three to successfully install Coppermine.

PHP (version 4.2.0 or better), either compiled with the support for the GD library or permission to use the exec() function for the ImageMagick "convert" utility in order to make thumbnails and reduced size images.

An image library: either GD version 1.x or 2.x (PHP has to be compiled to support it) or ImageMagick.

Sorry about the long post, please do help, thanks.

Re: Web Host - Which is the better deal?

1and1 will do you good at that price. I had them when they were offering a year free service (in hopes that I would join at the end) and they were very reliable.

Have you looked into Google Picasa and Flickr? The interfaces look much cleaner and they also allow for user comments.

What I like about Picasa is it doesn't resize the original file (for storage), and always has it available for download.

Re: Web Host - Which is the better deal?

I use 1and1 for my domain registration and I've been really happy with them. Though I run my own server out of my home, so I can't comment as much about their hosting.

Re: Web Host - Which is the better deal?

You need to check the fine print. Cheap hosts that give large amounts of space will throttle bandwidth to what they consider high traffic accounts. And the definition of "high traffic" is up to them. Hard drive space doesn't cost much, it's the transfer bandwidth that they'll get you with. If your site is going to be 4 GB of photos at the start and they are going to be viewed frequently, that'll run up the bandwidth. Just remember, you get what you pay for.

Anyway, ask 100 people about webhosts and they will recommend 100 different webhost providers.

If you want real server space with guaranteed bandwidth and real guaranteed uptime and excellent customer service, it'll cost more than $10-15/month.

As a web developer, I have a reseller account with a reliable WSP which I use for most of my clients who have small website needs. I also run a decent sized arena football website that gets a decent amount of traffic. I get 10GB space and 125GB bandwidth per month for $70. It comes with excellent customer service and excellent uptime.

Re: Web Host - Which is the better deal?

Media Temple recently switched to a grid server platform, touting superior uptime & performance because if one of the servers goes down or has a traffic spike, the others will pick up the slack. Sounds neat.

Re: Web Host - Which is the better deal?

I'll piggyback on Holadem's post -- I'm looking for a new webhost. I started with ServerCentral years ago. They moved to more business-oriented services, so I left and moved to FuturePoint.

I've been with FP for a few years, but I'm suffering another outage, both domain and email, and FP has dropped its support forum due to spam problems. While the proprieter, Joseph Baron, has generally responded quickly to service requests, I'm concerned that this is a bad combination: losing all access and they can't handle their own forums.

I'm inclined towards GoDaddy or 1and1 for my new registrar and host, based solely on brand name and apparent size. I have a little, personal site. My needs are modest. The Beginner option looks great, wtih 10 GB of space for $2.99 / month. That is more than I need now, and the Home option could be a future step, if I pursue some ideas I've got.

Any comments on 1and1 or GoDaddy's service? Is there another option I should consider?

Whatever you do, don't go with hostitnow.com I had a terrible experience with them.

I chose between GoDaddy and TotalChoiceHosting and went with the silver plan of TotalChoiceHosting. In about seven or eight years I don't think I've had more than an hour of downtime.

Re: Web Host - Which is the better deal?

Due to the delay in responses, I had forgotten about this thread! Thanks for the replies. I ended up going with the small guys, phpwebhosting.com, it's been painless and problem free so far...

But now that I know my way around this sort of stuff, and have an idea of my bandwidth needs, it's clear that the $10/month I am currently paying are too much and I could get the same elsewhere for half or less -- it's just a photo album of my travels and stuff for family and friends (albeit with ~800pix/2-3GB so far and growing fast). I just hope I don't find out that the rock solid reliability I have experienced so far factors into the price.

1and1 is likely my next host.

haha I remember them, hosted one of my first web sites. I can't count how many times they went down. Surfspeedy had an even better deal but their bandwidth claims are just bogus.

Here are some reputable alternatives Holadem:

www.lunarpages.com
www.dreamhost.com

1and1 has much better deals than when I was using them a couple years back. Only thing that turned me off from renewing was their clunky control panel, but I'm betting they've updated it by now. LP uses Cpanel which has a very popular, easy to use interface. DH uses a homebrew one which does the job but isn't as nice. MediaTemple probably has the slickest one, but also costs the most of the 4.
