Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD - Page 4

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I'm happily surprised at how much incidental singing was cleared for this dvd. It seems like every episode has a character singing a line or two of some classic number, and not cheap ones, either. (At one point, Maude even belts out "Some Enchanted Evening" from South Pacific!) It's especially surprising to get a completely (as far as we know) unedited set of a tv show from so many years ago, that hasn't even been popular in reruns. What a great dvd.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I bought this show as basically a blind buy. I'm 12 episodes in, it is a really great show and it is a shame it has sort of gotten lost in time. Hopefully enough people get season one so there is a season two.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

same here, the show was blind to me too... and I'm glad I checked it out!

I disagree with those who argue the show is too dated. Yes, it is to an extent, but many of the debates argued about on the show are still debated about in 2007. Yes, there are Nixon jokes that go over everyones head (I am willing to bet in season 2 and 3 they had a field day with Watergate and Nixon's resignation) but for the most part, the show still has it's spunk and attitude.

I hope we see the rest of the seasons too

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Maude to her husband: You always feel me underneath you (meaning that he thinks he is superior in the relationship)
Walter: I NEVER felt you underneath me (!!!)

The whole conversation changes to sexual in a second (you got it right?) and here is Maude's facial expressions (which Bea Arthur is most famous for even in Golden Girls) for an entire of 20secs of audience laughter........

Has anyone heard of a release or announcement for the 2nd season...if they go this slow it will take several years to get the entire series.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

No news yet unfortunately..
Dunno if "All in the Family" is owned by the same company but THAT series took years to release (1 set per year I think).. (Maude is a spin-off as you know of AITF)

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Demis....looks like this series will be the same. Another slow Sony release. Bewitched has also taken a long time...June 2005 Bewitched was first issued (1st season) and they are only up to season 4, with 5 coming in June I think. I am not sure why they wait so long in between seasons, if someone has the "fever" to buy one of their favorite series, give it to them in a quick manner.

I am most excited for the next season, I have watched the first season through 3 times now. I like Flora the maid, but when Hermione Baddeley becomes their maid (the maid from Mary Poppins), I think it became even funnier.

Did you buy the new set? I am not liking the packaging, especially when you open to take the discs out and want to read which episodes are on each disc, they put the list under the discs, so you have to remove them to see the descriptions. I think the funniest one on season one was the one about the marijuana.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Yeap I had pre-ordered it and I got confused about the descriptions of the episodes being in the inside and the last ones on the back of the other slimcase..

Let's hope for some extras on the next set!

I already bought AITF Season 2 containing 2 Maude episodes. The introduction of her character AND the Maude PILOT missing from the Season 1 set. The PILOT is H I L L A R I O U S though in the role of her daughter they have another actress, not Barbeau..

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Marcia Rodd was the original actress to play Maude's daughter, Carol. She appeared in the "pilot" episode that aired as an episode of AITF. She had previously appeared in the AITF episode "Mike's Mysterious Son". She was great in both parts and would have gone on to make a very good sparring partner for Bea Arthur. I have never heard why she was replaced with Ms. Barbeau (who was also fantastic). Perhaps she came across too tough and they needed the daughter to be more likable to balance out Maude's personality.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

they probably replaced the actress with Barbeau because of the sex symbol status she had in the 1970's

They replaced her with Barbeau for two reasons, and two reasons only. If you've seen the show you know what I mean.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Yes, Ms. Barbeau was certainly loaded with talent.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I bought this set, and am LOVING it! I watched it when I was a little kid, and though my mother thought it a bit mature for me, she let me watch it anyway.... along with The Young And the Restless. She wisely realized that sexual innuendo and adult themes (At least in the 70's) sailed right over the head of a child, and caused no problem at all. My favorite line from this set is Walter and Maude's "Liver lips" exchange. I almost peed my pants! I also LOVE the expressions on Bea Arthur's face when she's trying to eat breakfast, and Conrad Bain's character is on the phone with a patient discussing a nail fungus. Just priceless, that woman's facial expressions!

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I love the episode about the marijuana, it's so funny to see Maude telling Walter that she needs her pot. I am saddened that a 2nd season has not even been announced yet. If they release one season, they should have plans to release them every couple of months.

Her sex symbol status in the 1970's was DUE TO her role on Maude. Before Maude, nobody had ever heard of her.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Finally got my set and watched a few eps last night. This was the unusual series that was hilariously great right from the outset. Couple of observations:

1. It looks like they just used the same opening credits on every episode. It must be from later episodes, as the first eps seem to list Esther Rolle even though she didn't appear until the third ep.

2. There's a tiny bright spot in the upper right quadrant of the video that seems to appear on all the episodes I watched. It moves with the focus of the camera, so I don't know if it's a fault in the lens they used, or something odd in the mastering. I thought maybe a pixel had died on my TV, but since it moves around and it's only there when watching the Maude DVD I know it's not my television.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I am enjoying the show all over again. I used to watch it when I was young but didn't really get it. Now I do.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Malcolm, I also noticed the spot and was scared my projector developed a bad pixel, but it is definately a problem with many of the Maude episodes.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Sounds like a problem with one of the studio cameras.

No, they had simply filmed about five episodes before they created the credits and went to air. If I'm not mistaken, Esther Rolle's first episode was filmed first, even though it aired third. They wanted to lead with a "family" oriented episode (Carol seeing a shrink), instead of a more political based one (Maude overdoing the liberal "savior" bit with Florida).

Taped, not filmed.

Jay, you are absolutely correct! And to think I'm usually careful about such things. Shame on me!

I might pick this up just to remind myself how good Adrienne Barbeau looked.

She looks good, but I notice she has very bad teeth. Gaps and such.

I rented the discs, as I've never seen a single episode in my life, and am enjoying it.

Florida Evans was actually without a pot belly - big head, little body, oh well, great actress. It was a hoot seeing John Amos as Florida's husband (named Henry) - the episode called Florida's Problem was released in 1973, a year before the Evans Family got their own show called Good Times, and it seems like Amos had some hair treatment done for "Good Times," because it seemed like James, er, Henry had a big bald spot on his head for his guest appearance on "Maude."

John Amos is great, and I'm glad they kept him as Florida's husband for "Good Times."

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Great show, corny opening credits. "...And then there's Maude..." and Maude is there with a corny, uncharacteristically happy expression on her face, then shots of Maude moving around the house in odd poses - weird.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Ha-ha, things I learned from watching Maude:

WPT (White People Time) arriving punctually at 9
CPT (Colored People Time) shuffling in around 9

Henry Evans said it, so it can't be considered racist. Oh wait, "Maude" had white writers (so did "Good Times," so I hear).
