Henry Evans said it, so it can't be considered racist. Oh wait, "Maude" had white writers (so did "Good Times," so I hear).

That's too funny. I work with an African-American woman who is always talking about CPT. Then I saw it on these "Maude" discs. I didn't know it was such a widespread phrase.

OK.. I'm glad someone else brought this up.... Although not a HUGE deal, the first poster is indeed correct.... These
DVDs do use the same opening credits for all 22 episodes [I'm sure as do a lot of TV shows when they put them onto DVD.. they encode the opening credits once, then attach to all episodes]... However, the first two episodes DID have different credits, in that the first aired episode only listed Bea, Bill, and Adrienne.... then the second episode, which introduced us to Arthur, added in Conrad's name... then by the third aired episode, which introduced us to Florida, we then had the "complete" credits for Season One.... I noticed it from the very first viewing of the first episode that they didn't use the right opening titles, but sluffed it off, since it's really not a HUGE deal.... Now, keep in mind, I'm completely going off of my VHS collection that I recorded from TV Land back in 2001, but I can't see TV Land making an alteration like that... they had to be originally broadcast that way.... kind of ashame we dont have them that way on the DVDs, but again, not a huge deal....

I also noticed the little white spec, which is, yes, due to something on the camera lenses, as you'll see it disappear, then reappear, when they go to different camera shots, then back to that troubled one... Again, that doesn't really bother me too much, but something that did, which I haven't seen discussed thus far, was the presence of some lines of "discoloration" present in SOME of the episodes, usually about mid-screen, and usually only noticable when on a person's face... Anyone else notice that? Really not a BIG BIG deal, but, still annoying nonetheless.

whew... peace out

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Jasonandrew... YES.. I did notice the discoloration lines, that is a problem inherent to videotape, I've seen several shows have it. And that is surprising since CBS usually had higher quality videotape than the other two networks (Case in point, look at 1974 episodes of the 10,000$ pyramid on CBS and compare with 1978 episodes of the 20,000$ pyramid on ABC, like night and day. )

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Does anyone know the email or snail mail address for Sony for their TV dvd department? I suggest we all write to them about MAUDE, because I read in Variety Magazine that Sony is slowing down on their TV season sets, and sometimes only releases the first, and if it does extremely well, will consider more seasons. After reading what I read, I am concerned this first season is all we might get. Several of the problems that contribute to this decision could be low sales, plus they are having trouble placing all of these tv-series season sets in stores, they have run out of room.

If anyone knows how to contact Sony, please post it here so we can all make a strong request for seasons 2-and on.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Sony will have no one to blame but themselves if their shows fail. What's the threshold for whether a show gets continued? I bet it has seven digits. And would it kill them to do some advertising. A tvshowsondvd.com blurb announcing its release is NOT advertising.

Sony refuses to listen to anything customers have to say. If someone does manage to slip through the cracks of their consumer-hating infrastructure, their response is "La-la-la-la-la-la, I can't hear you!" But if you think it would make a difference, call this number: 1-800-860-2878

For what it's worth, this writer expects Sony to go bankrupt soon.

If this is true, I will shed not one tear.

Gamers don't like them.
DVD consumers don't like them.
Classic TV fans don't like them.
Closing logo aficionados hate their freakin' guts.

Does anyone actually LIKE this company anymore?

Hopefully they can sell COLUMBIA PICTURES (I refuse to call it or any of its divisions "Sony Pictures" anything) to someone who gives a damn. Heck, they were better off under Coca-Cola's ownership!

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I will admit that Sony isn't so bad with music clearance. The Nanny had a lot of music that so far has all been cleared. It's just with the Married with Children and Dawson's Creek theme songs, which isn't as much their fault as the respective publishers, that they lapsed.

But when I heard a Sony rep make a public comment saying "Who needs more than one season of Sanford & Son?", which DID do well and is completed, I lost all respect for them.

They couldn't get "Love and Marriage?" How does each episode open? What plays?

This story I read quoted a Sony spokesperson as saying "Many people will be pleased with the season 1, at least we haveput those out for them." Wow, I thought.

You must not have been a member when season 3 was announced and the box said "Includes New Opening Theme Song!" like it was an extra. The estates of Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen wanted more money per episode than the song was worth. Sony balked at their cynical attempt to gouge them and replaced it with an el schlocko sound-alike. The first 2 seasons and the "Most Outrageous Episodes" discs have the theme. They wanted a high fee to begin with and with each new season their demand grew and grew.

Dawson's Creek, which I do not own, apparently uses the international theme heard on non-US versions of the show.

The music publishing industry is run by dinosaurs whose business models haven't changed since the days when ragtime was all the rage.

What else did they say? Is there a link to this article online? I want to know exactly what to get angry at.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Matthew, I can't remember which web site I read that...you might try searching MAUDE under News stories. There was also a story in Home Media Retailing, I think last week's issue (I get the print edition in the mail...but most of that news is on their website too).

I sure hope we get the rest of the Maude seasons. They hardly ever run it on tv, and I just love the 2nd maid Hermione Baddeley, who plays Ms. Nagatuck. She was awesome

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

It occurred to me that I may have been a little hard on Sony. A few days ago right here on HTF they had a headline saying Sony was having layoffs because of the PS3. All the studios' home video divisions are allocating resources to HD formats, and TV show releases will suffer as a result. I wish that reality shows would bear more of that brunt. Nobody wants most of those on DVD, except maybe the biggies like "Survivor."

BTW, just to put this thread on a less worrisome track, Bea Arthur's one-woman show had as its exit music an extended version of the Maude theme song, still sung by Donny Hathaway and with the same backing as the TV version. I wish they'd release it commercially.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Well so far, nothing since March on the second season of Maude. I did find an email for Sony Home Entertainment, this is the only email, it is for customer service in the home vid department, but if you state in the letter that they please send this inquiry to those who decide on tv series releases, maybe there is a chance they will get it. It doesn't hurt to email and ask if the second season is coming, and that we want it. I noticed Sony's seasons are released sometimes 8-10 months apart, so maybe an announcement is coming..but here's their email and postal address. A postal letter, I am told, is more effective than an email, but both wouldn't hurt (I have also called them, nice people and hopefully they listen):

email: consumer@SPHECustomerSupport.sony.com

postal address: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment
10202 West Washington Blvd.
Culver City, CA 90232-3195

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Just sent them an email.. we'll see!
I hate to say this but maybe they are waiting to cash-in on the death of Bea Arthur. (when it happens)
Let's face it, she's not getting any fresher..

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I just got a response.....says thanks for writing and they will pass this along to the proper department for review. I also have been sending occasional letters via the postal service, it's a little more work but from what I have heard, the physical letter is much better to send as it actually sits on someone's desk and must be forwarded, where as an email can be deleted pretty fast.

Can';t get out of my head the story I read in home media retailing magazine, which one studio, can't remember who, said alot of people are happy with just the first season sets (how stupid can he/she be). I hope this isn't the case. Why don't they just do the whole darn series on one set and those that want it will buy it. Aside from mastering costs, it would pretty much be profit for them. They never learn!

well, hopefully Bea still has quite a few years left on her. I hope to see her and Betty make it to 90

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

It's too bad that they didn't get Bea to do some commentary for the first season, very cheap Sony.......of course the commentary she did for the Golden Girls was poorly directed, all she said for most of the several commentaries was "oh the writing." Wasn't there anyone there to help her out?

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Buena Vista is one up on Sony for fixing the cropping of 5 shows on the last season of Golden Girls, and even asking the cast to participate in the first place.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Lucky you. I sent my set back and they lost it, now I have to buy a new one, and I assume will have to send it back again.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Wait a minute, what problem? Can anyone give me specifics? I bought this right when it came out (last season Golden Girls)....I want to know if mine is bad!

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Some episodes have a "faux widescreen" effect, with black bars.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

does anyone know which episodes?

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

I don't remember since I don't have the set right now. Did you already watch it? Obviously your set wasn't affected if you didn't notice.

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

No my set must have been ok, I have watched it 4 times through already, because I am unable to see any other season (Darn Sony).

Re: Announcing MAUDE : The Complete First Season DVD

Oh, I was talking about Season 7 of The Golden Girls, not Maude. My original response was to MatthewA's post.

For those interested it's been said that Bea and Barbeau recorded a commentary track but since it wasnt included in the 1st set, hopefully it will be on later sets.. if there will be any more sets that is.

More Sony magic: making supplemental features disappear.

I guess the promised, undelivered extras on Silver Spoons was not an isolated incident.
