True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades" - Page 2

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

They said they would contact me when it was ready and not to send it in until then. When I got off the phone with them there was no doubt in my mind that they were taking care of it. I guess there is some doubt now after reading that others received different responses.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

I just got off of the phone with Disney on this issue, and the story I got is that they are DEFINITELY fixing the issue as quickly as possible and WILL send me a new disc with a prepaid mailer to return the old one, as soon as it becomes available. So I would recommend to anyone who called earlier and got a wishy-washy response, to call back and see if the story has changed. Again, once I got past the 1st level "info gathering agent" and forwarded to the actual technician, there was complete acknowledgement of the issue and complete assurance that replacement discs were currently in development/production.

My experience was exactly the same as yours David.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

Well, I just got off the phone with them, and the very nice lady took my info and said that they'll be in touch once they figure whats up. So, one more voice hopefuly lending support to getting the disc remastered.

I also took a moment to mention that I was terribly dissapointed in the Disney Treasures getting the axe. I dont know if anything would come of it, but might as well put a bug in their ear while I had 'em on the phone, right?

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

When I called, they said they knew of the problem and would send a return envelope out but to wait until Disney contacted me before returning the disc. This tech was not as firm that it was in the works to be redone.

I'm beginning to think that the problem may have happened at the film stage and not a "cross-patch" of the video channels. This looks more like printing records with the wrong filter (sep negs are red, green, blue to print to positives which are yellow, magenta, cyan so if a new interpositive was created with the wrong filters on two of the records, you'd get color but they would be wrong as previously posted--this would require reprinting not just switching channels to get it right.)

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

But even if the error occured in the film realm instead of the digital video realm, the DVD could still be corrected by simply switching the red and blue channels, couldn't it? Why would a repriting be required?

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

Why would a repriting be required?

Well the colors in film and the Technicolor Seps from the 50s are different than the color spectrum for television. You might get close (and they might choose to do it that way) by pulling the channels and reassigning them, but there is such a thing as cross-talk and film has corrections built-in for that problem.

It's all pure supposition on my part, it could have been an electronic error but it's something I've never seen happen in a telecine suite.

Also, since the IP is protection, it's better to have it right and in the vault for the future. One of the problems we've had over the years is the only way to check seps is to print them back and very very few studios ever did it until the original negative was damaged. Since the True Live Adventures were mainly shot on 16mm, it was Technicolor that did blow-up seps from the original Kodachrome Commercial film in the first place.

We'll see what they do.

I noticed that only Volumes 3 and 4 are still on the shelves at Best Buy. Perhaps 1 and 2 have been recalled.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

I just got an email from Disney that states the new disc is ready and that it will be mailed to me. They will provide a return mailing label with the disc so that I can send the old disc back.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

I received a replacement disc for True-Life Adventures, Volume 1 - Disc 1 today and Prowler of the Everglades IS corrected.

I did not send in my original or anything, though an enclosed letter asked me to (and I will). You can see the corrected screenshot here.

On the backside of the inner ring of the original (defective) disc, it reads:

310037 L0 (L4422) TLA-ON-NM1.1 01

The corrected disc reads:

(318536) TLA-ON-NM1.2 2

Got mine yesterday too (and the replacement disc for Volume 4/Disc 1). Very impressive service by Disney. They included a prepaid adhesive return label that I used to mail the old discs in today. Be aware before disposing of the shipping envelope that the return label could be easily missed if your don't look carefully.

I haven't got my Volume 4 / Disc 1 yet. Hopefully soon.

You might want to consider calling them for that Volume 4 disk. I received both my disks in the same package.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

I sent them my email on Tuesday night and got my replacement disc today. Great service, if you ask me!

Thank you Disney, for fixing this so quickly and painlessly.

And thanks to HTF for all the info on replacing the disc.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

Got mine yesterday. Thanks again, Disney! I take back some of the things I said about you. I'll take back some more when we get the planned replacement of the More Silly Symphonies.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

Since I posted regarding my initial call (higher up on this page), I'll also report that I received my corrected copy last week. Very nice of Disney to just send the disc and trust me to send the defective one back.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

Does anyone know if the new sets being sold now still have this problem?

Also, do the 4 sets that are out include all of the TLA series, or are there more to be released?

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

Can't speak to whether new product includes the corrected disks, but all of the True Life Adventures are included in these 4 sets. No more are expected.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

I got this set a week or so ago from DeepDiscount, and it looks like my version of Prowler is the bad one. Of course I don't know how long they had that copy in stock, so it's possible Disney is shipping some corrected sets by now.

It was hard to tell watching it, since some of it is set in a foggy swamp, so colors might look off anyway... and some parts looked OK, but I remember some scenes where the water looked more red than blue as shown in this thread, more like the Ten Commandments than a nature film.

If not for this thread, I would have just thought old film, washed out colors, or maybe some original elements are missing, and this is the best they could restore it.

Swapping my cables would involve moving too much heavy stuff, so I'll take your word for it.

Haven't watched the entire disc, just one other film, which looked fine.

Re: True-Life Adventures - Color Issue on "Prowler of the Everglades"

The easiest way to tell if you have a bad copy is to look at the RKO title at the beginning of the film. It should be blue. If it is blue, it's fine. If it's red then you need a replacement.

Or check the number on the inner ring of the disc as described in post 41 of this thread.

I recently bought True Life Adventures Volume 1 (yes, believe it or not I found a supplier who still has this at the regular price!) but found that Prowlers of the Everglades had the incorrect coloring. I emailed Disney and, although I am in the UK, they mailed me the correct disc which arrived within a few days and they did not ask for me to return my incorrect disc. Wonderful service from Disney!
Douglas, is that retailer in the UK or US? If it's the US, could you hook a brother up? I was able to get the other three but missed the first one.
Paul - I got it from Movietyme.com which appears to be a UK site specialising in supplying region 1 titles to Europe.
Volumes 2 and 3 and 4 of the Walt Disney Legacy Collection: True Life Adventures are currently available on the Disney Movie Club website for $25 each, unless you're a member or you're buying on one of the discounts, in which case it can be had for half the price.

I just now searched movietime.com in the UK for volume 1 which I don't have, but alas, only volume 2 shows up.

Doug- a belated thanks for the info.
Looks like this will remain a hole in my collection for a while.

Found a copy of Volume 1 at the local Best Buy. It was buried under other TLA volumes, which I quickly picked up also.  Glad this thread came up recently or I'd never known about these.

I bought Vol 1 (and the others) over a year and a half ago and when I emailed Disney (a couple of times) about the replacement disc but they never replied.  So I just extracted my own digital copy of Prowlers, switched the red and blue channels myself, and now it looks perfect to me.
