I have a onkyo 790 and just got a set of primus
360s and not happy with them (muddy).
What would you recomend for about $400.00
mostly for cranking rock and roll (heavy metal)
thanks jerry

Hi Jerry

A lot of folks would use Cerwin-Vega

Re: Not happy with primus 360s

Hey Jerry;
I've seen quite a few others that own the Primus 360s that are pretty satisfied w/them, so I'm wondering if they're just not your taste or you're trying to get them to do something they're not capable of doing.

Are you running these w/a subwoofer? Are you running them full range (configured in your Onkyo)? The 360s are rated down to 38Hz, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were closer to the mid 40s for LF capabilities. As such, you'd likely be better off running these as 'small' in your receiver's configuration or have the crossover set to no lower than 60Hz, more preferably 80hz, letting the sub handle from 80Hz and under.

If you aren't running these w/a sub configured as 'small', you might want to give this a shot as I believe it will open up some of the mids and highs of the 360s and possibly give you the performance you were expecting w/them. If you're already running them in this configuration and assuming there's nothing wrong w/them, you might want to try some other speakers. I'd be happy to offer suggestions on this, similar to Arthurs, however I'd like to hold off to hear what your response to my comments/suggestions above are... -TD

Re: Not happy with primus 360s

I tried all kinds of settings they just sound flat they have
no seperation.
Thats with a sub (onkyo).
So i went into my kids room and took
his polk R300s (@$49.99) and they seem
to sound better.
The polks have a good strong clear sound.
I thought the 360s would Rock?

Re: Not happy with primus 360s

Very strange... wonder if there's something wrong w/one of them, possibly a tweeter, midrange or crossover.

Did you buy these somewhere locally you could listen to a different pair or possibly return these?

They should be much better than your describing, I'd have to believe there's something wrong w/them... -TD

Re: Not happy with primus 360s

I got them at crutchfield and they will
be going back.
I had a few people over to hear them
and all said the r300s sounded better.
I have no idea why.

Re: Not happy with primus 360s

I'm sure they don't sound good, wonder what's wrong w/them as I'm pretty sure they shouldn't sound muddy by any means.

Bummer man, fortunately Crutchfield's a good place to work with. Hopefully you can find something better you prefer and doesn't have any issues... -TD
