"Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

(EDIT: I've posted links to FOUR cut scenes- see post #15 below)

This subject was brought up in another thread, but I didn't want to totally hijack that thread, and I thought it was worthy of its own thread.

There are two scenes from Neil Simon's Murder By Death that I believe were present in network TV airings of the film (which is where I saw the film for the first time and fell in love with it) that are NOT present in the current DVD, nor in the TCM airings. I'm not sure if either scene was present in theatrical prints (anyone here see the film in '76?) but I definitely remember seeing both scenes in the network airings.

The 1st scene is when Willy (after being instructed by his father to cover up Twain's body) finds a note on Twain and proudly announces his discovery to the other guests (on the current DVD you can actually see Willy noticing something near Twain's hand as he's kneeling beside the body).

The 2nd scene is at the end of the film, when as the Wang's are driving away, they see Sherlock Holmes and Watson pulling up to the Twain residence. Willy says something like "should we warn them?" and Sidney replies "let them find out for themselves."

I guess it's too late for a 30th Anniversary Edition DVD, but I'd really like to see these scenes included in a new DVD or Blu-Ray (even if only as "outtakes"). With so many DVDs from this era going OOP, I guess there's little chance of that happening, even though this film really deserves it.

This could be a false memory on my part (I was only 6) but I remember laughing at that part in the theater.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Sony/Columbia totally ruined the DVD cover artwork on its
original release. It is perhaps one of the BEST examples
of the WORST treatment ever given to DVD artwork.

For that reason alone I don't readily expect the studio
to put any effort into a Special Edition release....

We can only hope.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Awful cover. Designed by someone who probably skimmed through the movie and thought it had something to do with Columbo solving another case.

"You'll die laughing figuring it out"???

I only have a VHS. I can't remember where I recorded it. Probably TCM. But I also remember bits of this movie that may have been edited out. I can no longer recall specifically what they might've been.

Great film, though. My favorite line ever is the one about the mushroom story.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

I remember the Sherlock Holmes scene as well at the theater. But I agree with Ron. Horrible artwork and a thrown together DVD release doesn't bode particularly well for any further interest from Sony.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

I saw MBD many times in the theatre in it's initial release, and neither of those scenes were present. The current DVD and TCM airings are the original theatrical version. Those scenes were added for the network airings.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

I have the LD. The scenes you speak of are not present there either.

Ah. The memories of a 6 year old fail me.

I just wonder what other deleted scenes they have that we would all love to see. Any extra scenes with Peter Sellers would be classic to say the least.

I agree with that 100% - it's the first thing I thought when I saw the cover. Too bad they didn't use the great Charles Addams illustrations that were used in the opening/closing titles (and on the LD cover). Maybe there are some sort of rights issues now.

There must be a treasure trove of deleted scenes, aside from the two mentioned. According to Neil Simon, there were many re-writes on the set, different endings, etc. I don't think it would be a stretch to assume that some of those alternate scenes were filmed, and with such a spectacular cast, I'm sure Sony/Columbia would have no trouble finding suitable material for a SE DVD (if they cared enough to look). I'd double-dip for a MBD SE in a hot second.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

I would definitely Double Dip for a Special Edition. I wonder if there's any outtakes as well. Those would probably be great to see.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

"DVD cover highlighting one actor in ensemble cast like television set on honeymoon--unnecessary."

I helped derail that other thread by mentioning "Murder by Death," as the original idea on "The Shining" inspired memories of other movies with possibly missing scenes. I'm glad I wasn't dreaming about the missing Sherlock Holmes scene, and I had often wondered about that odd cut just as Richard Narita spots something on the floor (after he jerks the tablecloth from a table without disturbing anything on it!).

Outtakes/bloopers from this movie alone would be worth a double dip for me.

Thanks for bringing the subject up- I had totally forgotten about those scenes.

Sony/Columbia, are you listening?

EDIT: BTW, what was written on the note that Willie found? Wasn't it something like "pick up dry cleaning"?

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

I totally agree. I think this film is totally overlooked in it's treatment. I believe I posted the cover in the "Worst Cover Art" thread when it came out. I actually had to make a new cover using the original poster art, which was much better IMHO. I couldn't look at that red monstrosity on my shelf anymore, especially for one of my favorite comedy movies.

Someone has posted FOUR scenes from the tv edit on YouTube. The two I mentioned in the 1st post, and two others:

YouTube - 'Murder by Death' Deleted Scene #1 of 4

YouTube - 'Murder by Death' Deleted Scene #2 of 4

YouTube - 'Murder by Death' Deleted Scene #3 of 4

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

For years all I have been hearing about is the infamous deleted
"Sherlock Holmes scene." Quite frankly, I had thought it was the
figment of someone's imagination. Well, after all this time I was
proved wrong by deleted scene #4. There really was a Sherlock
Holmes scene in that film!

Miel, thanks so much for posting this. For deleted scenes, they
are pretty darn good.

Murder By Death remains to this day one of my all-time
favorite comedies due to its immensely popular cast.

I have just sent a very influential contact at Sony an email this
morning bringing attention to this thread
and the interest in having a
Special Edition done. The contact realizes the importance of such
release suggestions and at best it will put the title in their mind
for future consideration.

Oh, and just as a reminder as to how BAD the Sony artwork was,
here is the Original Poster vs. DVD Release artwork.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Aw man! I can't wait to get home from work so I can view those in the comfort of my own home. Thanks for posting those links.

I still have a lame VHS. I'd now like to snag that DVD since it's all cleared up about it actually being the theatrical cut. But...if a new SE might be coming.....well.....VHS viewings are probably in my future for a little while longer.

God, just seeing those images together like that is horrifying. What in the heck were they thinking? At least if there's a new SE they can do some rediculous "big head" cover, but include the original poster art on a card inside.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Thanks Miel.

Nice to see Peter Sellers doubling up as the London cabby there.

It might be a mistake, but David Quinlan's Film Stars book also lists Phil Silvers as appearing in a deleted scene for this film.

THANKS!!! Yes, the thing that bugs me about these scenes the most, is that they are really GOOD! The scene with Dick and Dora almost running over Tess and then Dick telling her to "keep to the side of the road" is hysterical. The other three scenes are also very funny.

Those four scenes REALLY need to be released on DVD (or blu-ray!)

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Finally got around to watching those scenes. Well, I won't lose sleep over them not being on the DVD but it sure would be nice to get a SE DVD that at least had good quality version either on there for viewing or reinserted into the movie.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Those deleted scenes are amazing--I hadn't seen those in some 25-30 years. I had forgotten about the scene where the car screeches to a halt behind Tess, but as I saw that look on her face in the clip, I remembered seeing it years ago. I don't remember ever seeing the scene with Sellers as the cabby, but the Sherlock Holmes scene and Narita's extra scene were just as I remembered them.

I saw Murder by Death in its TV version on commercial stations several times, with the naughtier bits edited out and the now-deleted scenes inserted to pad the run time, before I ever saw the theatrical version on VHS. Estelle Winwood was virtually silent throughout the TV version--she had only a few lines to start with, and at least two of those had to go for commercial TV!

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Hi everyone!

I grew up on this VHS recording from TV. All of these extra scenes were, to me, just part of the movie. With the release of the DVD, I thought three things:
1. Why on EARTH would they make the cover that way?!?
2. WOW! There are scenes that I have NEVER seen before!
3. Wait, where are the scenes with the driving Charlestons, the cabby, Willy findinig the note, and Sherlock Holmes?

I was also very disappointed that they were not included in the special features. I would DEFINITELY buy a new SE DVD, if they were to create one!

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

Yeah, I'd buy this and The Cheap Detective if SONY would release them on Blu Ray.

Hi carport 888! I'm the one who sent you the message on YouTube. Please send me a PM if you get a chance. Thanks!

The DVD cover art is particularly bad when you consider that the original poster art was done by Charles Addams, creator of The Addams Family. The original art work for that poster is probably worth a small fortune today.

Well, as this is possibly being viewed by someone with some influence to get the job done let me add my voice to the others who love this movie and would buy (or rebuy) a completed version. It's one of the funniest, best cast comedies out there.

Re: "Murder By Death" cut scenes...time for a SE DVD?

And we'll pay extra if you can also get the original poster art in there somewhere. DVD cover would be nice, but a cardboard insert would be fine too.

Let me say this at this point....

We are very fortunate that people at all the studios take a great
interest in what gets posted on this forum.

I would not lie to any of you when I say that I promise what you
have posted here has already gotten the attention of someone with influence.

It's great to know we have a "voice" that at least will get to the proper parties, and this is one movie request I hope they will be able to honor.

To those with influence:
