The house I bought last year had a semi-done entertainment room completed and I noticed after we moved in, this odd 3-prong outlet.

Standard outlets are this: [] []
0

but this one is like this: __ __

0

Baisically the slits are 9 'o' clock to 3 o clock. Never seen this before.

any suggestions???

Re: What kind of outlet is this???

So instead of the slits going up and down they are side to side?

That is a 220 volt outlet. Maybe they thought they needed a lot of power.

I guess I should state that it's in the entertainment room. What would require that much power? I'm thinking that the room may have been part of the kitchen once and they seperated it to make this room and left the outlet there just because. Thanks though.

It's either a 208-240v outlet. Since you don't have 3-phase in the home, it's either 240v, potentially as high as 30amp service. See

http://www.nooutage.com/nema_configurations.htm

for a quick guide to outlet types (first place that had a chart; it isn't complete, though.)

Yeah, that's the chart I was looking for - I had seen a physical one once...

Re: What kind of outlet is this???

If it was part of the kitchen then it is a range outlet, probably 50 amp. Do you have any 50 amp breakers in your panel box? If you do that is the outlet.

Paul:

Do you have a volt meter? I would check to see if the plug is live with the meter.

Re: What kind of outlet is this???

First since this is an internation website what country are you in? USA?

If USA then yes it's a 220 outlet. Get an electrician out there and he can easily change that to a standard 110 outlet.
