Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

The current top ten through post 94 (# of votes in parentheses)
1. The Departed (34)
2. Children of Men (24)
3. United 93 (21)
4. Casino Royale (24)
5. Superman Returns (18)
6. The Prestige (17)
7. Little Miss Sunshine (20)
8. V for Vendetta (20)
9. Borat (17)
10. The Fountain (10)

(11. Pan's Labyrinth (7, rapidly rising in the ranks))
(12. Rocky Balboa (12))

Departed and Children of Men are the only films to have cracked 200 pts and their point distribution and separation is very comparable to Batman Begins and Munich from last year (last year's 1 and 2)

There are 89 ranked films so far ranging from 0.5 pts to 230.5 pts Another 8 films have been mentioned in partial lists, but have no score since I don't enter partial lists, if you've not seen enough films to complete a real top ten, then you probably shouldn't be participating.

placeholders or partial lists not included in the tally:
Chuck Mayer
Marc Colella
Shawn KE
Nick C
Nathan V
Simon Massey
David J
Andrew Schwarz
Seth Paxton
Brett Gallman
Aaron Cooke

A decent sampling of films should be a requirement for posting in this thread (there are a few posters with an 06 tally of less than 20). Obviously it's unenforceable, but the honor system will have to do, as it always has. Whyte used to suggest 40 movies... which perhaps a bit much for many. IMO 30 is a good minimum.

I agree that 30 is a good minimum. I think I'll edit the main post to suggest that as well.

Added Pans Labyrinth.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

Bumped Superman Returns out the great column into #7 on my list. This unfortunately knocked Last King of Scotland off. Still subject to further possible change.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

OK i'll ammend my list to make it a full top 10. I've obviously seen more movies this year I just didn't feel any beyond the first 7 were exceptionally worthy. but I saw the proposition last night so i'll throw that on here as well. My new updated top 10 for 2006

1. The Fountain
2. The Prestige
3. Children of Men
4. Borat
5. Clerks 2
6. The Proposition
7. POTC2
8. Babel
9. V for Vendetta
10. Jackass 2

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

As I slowly knock out the films I missed in '06, I am quickly learning that 2006 will be know as the year of the "Smart Comedy". I consider that to be a compliment. I have now seen Little Miss Sunshine, Stranger than Fiction, and Thank You for Smoking (among others). I love the fact that they are different from the typical comedy and rely of very clever writing and brilliant acting as opposed to spoof or slap-stick.

I also have to throw Borat (on a totally different level) into the mix, even though it's hard to compare to the 3 I mentioned above. It's much more "shock value" comedy, but still very smart and clever (and freaking hillarious).

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

Okay, I'll take a shot at this:

1. Superman Returns
2. Mission: Impossible III
3. Flags of Our Fathers
4. Letters From Iwo Jima
5. The Departed
6. Rocky Balboa
7. The Fountain
8. Borat
9. United 93
10. Pan's Labyrinth

So yeah, it's a "personal favourites" list, rather than an "I know what's best for everybody" list.

I would've preferred to list Flags and Letters as a single film/achievement, since one of the cooler things about the movies is that they both exist.

I saw well over 30 films in 2006, but as with any year, there are a few biggies that I haven't yet caught: Inland Empire, The Good Shepherd, Perfume, Dreamgirls, The Illusionist. Otherwise, I feel like I've seen all the big awards-worthy titles. If any of these films change my Top 10 (and next weekend, Inland Empire just might), I'll re-post.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

I'll be seeing Letters from Iwo Jima sometime in the next few days so after that I'll re-order my Top 10 list if nescessary and post an update. I've seen Children of Men, Babel and The Queen in the last couple of weeks and decided to wait until I see Letters to reorganize the list. There will be changes, just not quite sure where.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

I've updated my list now that I've seen a few more of the 2006 stragglers (Letters from Iwo Jima, The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, Pan's Labyrinth). Will try to see Notes from a Scandal this weekend, and maybe Volver, but unlikely on that one since it's limited in nearby theaters.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

Letters From Iwo Jima goes in at number 1. What a wonderful film. Clint Eastwood's big risk project pays off in spades. Little Miss Sunshine drops out.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

I have updated my Top 10.

It is now ordered not alphabetical. I added Pan's Labyrinth (recently seen) and Stranger than Fiction (forgotten first time) so this drops V for Vendetta and The Queen out of the top 10.

Of films in release only Letters from Iwo Jima needs to be seen and probably has a serious chance to make my top 10.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

Edited my Top 10 by adding The Queen (just saw it!)...Dropped Deja Vu to the Honorable Mention group.

Not a whole lot really separates alot of my top 10 and some of the other films. A very solid year.

8) Pirates Of The Carribean: Dead Man's Chest
9) V For Vendetta
10) Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby

Having recently seen Rocky Balboa and Flags of Our Fathers, I'm dropping V For Vendetta and Talladega Nights from my previous list (above). I'd put Rocky at #5 now and Flags at #7, it was really good but I had hoped it would have been better than it was.

1) Monster House

3) Casino Royale
4) Blood Diamond
5) Rocky Balboa

Whoa. Just saw "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" I'm not surer, was this 2006? If it was, I need to find a place for it somewhere.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

I've now seen 47 movies for one year, which finally makes this to be the first HTF Top 10 List that I can officially participate in. Explanations will be coming soon as I have to update my list, but as of right now:

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

Updated, the final time?, the old top 10, adding Letters from Iwo Jima. Although I've yet to see Inland Empire, I've never been enamored with Lynch, so this update is pretty much it.

Re: 2006 Top Ten Lists - Time to Throw Down!

Finally caught Pan's Labyrinth and slotted it in at #5. Little Miss Sunshine was the casuality.
