Denon 2807 vs Yamaha 1700

I'm about to buy one or the other but I'm having a hard time deciding which to buy. I'd like to get something that I won't have to replace for a while (yeah, right. ) They are about the same price point (a little over $1000) but the Yamaha doesn't upconvert while the Denon does (to 480p). On the other hand, the Yamaha has HDMI v1.2a and the Denon has HDMI v1.1 but will that make a difference? Should I wait until the v1.3 recievers come out in 2007? The 2807 won the CNET "best in home-audio product" at the 2006 CES which says something about the Denon. I haven't been able to find any reviews on the Yamaha 1700 (too new?). So I'd like to hear from HTF experts: which do you prefer and why?

Also are both compatible for Blu-ray or HD DVD? I don't have yet, but I hope to in the future.

FYI - I have B&W 603 fronts, 601 rears, LCR 60 center, a 10" Velodyne sub and a Panasonic Plasma (720p/1080i) - for 65% movies/TV and 35% music.

Thanks!

Re: Denon 2807 vs Yamaha 1700

I've listened to both sets and found the sound quality of the Denon more natural and mellow. Yamaha, I always find them to be too metallic. After a full month of research, I too was about to get the 2807 when I came across the Pioneer Elite VSX-82TSX. Not only was the sound better, the power was 130 vs 120 watts. Also it has THX, 3 HDMI inputs and a price that's the same as the Denon. However, what swings it was the fact that I was told from two different sources that the HDMI conversion of the Pioneer was more reliable. ( Denon had a few audio HDMI conversion hick-uos, unsure whether they have solve the problem?!). Have fun and good luck!!

Re: Denon 2807 vs Yamaha 1700

Based on what I've read (here and elsewhere) the RX-V1700 does have upconversion from all inputs to HDMI and scaling to 480p from 480i sources. If I were buying one myself (which a week ago I thought I was) I would probably go w/ either the Denon 987 (2807 w/ out custom installer features), the Onkyo SR804, or the SR803 since the prices are killer (though it doesn't upconvert or scale video to HDMI). I'd ruled out the RX-V1700 due to price but was considering its CLOSE cousin, the HTR-6090. Turns out my father-in-law got me the RX-V1700 and a Harmony 880 for christmas so needless to say that's the way I'm going!
