Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

What about Delbert Mann's "The Outsider" (1961), starring Tony Curtis as Pima Indian soldier Ira Hayes? I've seen this movie in the early sixties and never since. It seems to be almost forgotten.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

Nicholas Ray's Bigger Than Life ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049010/ ) featuring James Mason's greatest performance outside of Lolita has yet to be released in Region 1 although it appears there is an import.

EDIT: To underscore the rarity of this film, I believe it has never been released on VHS either.

It's available from France (pal R2) with the title "Derrière le miroir" anamorphic, removable French subtitles.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

There are plenty of no-show films I'd like to see on DVD that are not out yet, well-known or not.

Fox:
Sitting Pretty (1948, and two sequels)
With a Song in My Heart (1952)

Warner:
Where's Charley (1952)
Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? (1978, and it aired on INHD yesterday!)

Unknown:
The African Queen (1951)
Porgy and Bess (1959)

Disney/Buena Vista:
Song of the South (1946)
So Dear to My Heart (1949)
The Sword and the Rose (1952)
The Littlest Outlaw (1955)
El Cid (1961)
The Incredible Journey (1963)
Emil and the Detectives (1964)
The Wild Country (1971)
Scandalous John (1971)
Take Down (1979)
Amy (1981)

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

For as prolific an actress as she was in the 30s-40s, it's surprising that so few of Ann Sothern's starring vehicles have been released on DVD. Actually, considering the "B" nature of most of her films, maybe it's not so surprising. But I've always had a soft spot for Ms Sothern and would like to see more of her work. A Maisie collection would be quite welcome.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

The Woman Chaser, a delightful black comedy, shot in gorgeous B&W, starring Patrick Warburton in his greatest role, based on the novel of the same name by Charles Willeford, has yet to be released on any home video format anywhere in the world, to my knowledge. This is an example of "true" pulp fiction, not the 1990s post-modern re-imagined version of the genre. I had the pleasure of seeing it twice around the turn of the millennium.

My Breakfast With Blassie, starring Andy Kaufman and Fred Blassie (the recording artist most famous for "Pencil Neck Geek") enjoying breakfast in a diner. Available on VHS, but not on shiny metal disc.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

It appears USA Today tried to publish the article but failed... there is a headline on USAToday titled "Dec. 12: Many movies haven't made it to DVD" but when you click it --

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/...VD-watch_x.htm

-- it is an unrelated article about some pre-code movies. The main DVD page at USA Today is:

It's there It's call "Movies Lost in the DVD desert" - here is the link

I'm even mentioned!

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

Some more titles are on the way:

Besides "Charge of the Light Brigade"

There was an announcement a few days ago stating "El Cid' "Fall of the Roman Empire" and some of the other Bronson films would be release this coming year (It said something to the effect that Disney no longer holds the rights)

"Cheyenne Autumn" is available as part of the John Ford collection, but not individually.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

I think that Heavy Metal petition the USA Today article mentions predates the DVD format by a couple years. And the movie has been out on DVD since 1999.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

BECKET, which is getting a repertory re-release in early 07, is likely to turn up, finally, next year.

The HD channels are repositories for the DVD MIA. Just yesterday I DVR-ed THE NELSON AFFAIR and the delightful WHO IS KILLING THE GREAT CHEFS OF EUROPE?, which may come out in 08 if a proposed Vegas-set remake gets off the ground.

And a bit superficial, if you ask me. The article just skims the surface.

In the case of FALSTAFF, a/k/a CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT, Miramax in the '90's did intend to reissue the film, it was on their upcoming list for a couple years. Then it disappeared. No one has ever commented, but good money suggests Beatrice Welles interfered. So it's not just foreign ownership or a lack of perceived profit return that keeps DVDs from release.

Re: Movies Not Available on DVD

Don't forget the cheese we love:

Humongous (1981) A slasher b-movie with great atmosphere and no reason whatsoever why it shouldn't already be on our shelves. Some guy did put this on youtube in 12 parts.

TerrorVision (1986) Weird scifi/comedy.

I'd love to see Rich Little's A Christmas Carol from HBO make it. Our tape of it is getting old. Old TV stuff like this is a blast from the past when they suddenly appear on the shelves.

Oh, no region 1 for The Stepfather.

No region 1 widescreen for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from 1972 or The Gate from the mid-1980s.
