Ah, thanks. That Beethoven set is on Sony/ BMG, not Brilliant Classics. Pretty decently priced at 40 Euro!

Aaron,

And the fact that a US-citizen probably won't have to pay VAT makes it more than 16% less expensive (while having it shipped overseas increases the price, unfortunately).

Did somebody mention VAT?

Rats. The set went up from Euro 34 to Euro 39.

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

I just got my copy a few days ago. Quite daunting to open it up and see all those discs. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I already have the Complete Symphonies (Hogwood/Academy Of Ancient Music) and Complete Piano Concertos (Bilson/Gardiner English Baroque Soloists), so those pieces will probably not get any play. However, what I've heard so far sounds nice to my ears, I'm discovering works I never would have otherwise seeked out.

I need to come up with some kind of system for keeping track of what I've already spun.

Apparently, when this was released last year this set made quite a splash in worldwide markets. Here is an interesting article regarding this release.

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

Philip: Thanks for posting the link to that article. I found the entire thing very interesting.

I found this section especially enlightening. This pretty much describes my motivation for getting the set. While there are certain pieces on which I might prefer particular performers...the ability to acquire all this music...in one place...at that price (sub $100 for me!) was a blessing.

The label also kept costs down by producing its own recordings that feature lesser-known artists who command lower fees than the stars. "We sell repertoire, not stars," said Pieter van Winkel, Director of Brilliant Classics. "If you want stars, you have to pay for them, and not everybody is prepared to pay full price for a star."

Oh great -- they're planning a complete edition of Haydn after I bought their 40-disc Haydn set!

The set would cause further controversy with the French press who accused Brilliant of creating "confusion" around set CD prices at retail, devaluing recorded performances and helping to impoverish the field. Other labels and critics would come to the label's defense. The debate would ultimately fuel major sales of the set in France.

Ah, yes, the law of unintended consequences hits the French again.

So what's on the 40 disc set? Maybe we can arrange something when the complete Haydn comes out. Surely all the content you already have will be reproduced, as with their many Mozart sets (Symphonies, Piano Concertos, etc.).

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

I'm sure that everything in the 40-disc Haydn set will be in the complete set. They already put out a separate set of the complete symphonies, and the Masterworks set only includes #52 onwards. The Masterworks set doesn't include any operatic material, but it does include most of the other stuff.

I'm also wondering whether they'll do a complete Mozart SACD set once they finish re-releasing all the existing set's contents in smaller SACD sets. Has anyone heard them? How do they sound?

I bought one at that price. Now they need to do the same with the Bach.

That's for the import version. The domestic (US) version of the Bach set is $107.97. Buy 'em both (Bach/Mozart) for $222.94. That's 325 discs!!

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

What was that, a 2-hour sale in the middle of the night?!?!?!

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

The sale was on for more than 8 hours. I saw it in the morning at work, came home and it was still there.

I guess it went on for a while before it got posted here then.

If anyone notices it again. . .please drop a note here!

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

FYI -- Amazon US has marked down the Mozart 170-disc and Bach 155-disc sets to $90.99 apiece. This appears to be a markdown rather than a sale, but they're likely to change the price again at some point soon.

Sooooo tempted. . .

The Bach set is $99, the Mozart is $90. Even at the full price these things are an absolute STEAL. Anyone who is interested even slightly will kick themself for every day they hesitated to spend this pittance on such a vast musical collection.

Grrrrr! Aaron thanks for posting about the price on the Bach set. I would pull the trigger in a second. I have been enjoying the Mozart set a LOT! But this is not the time for me to do it. Just too much obligation at this particular point in time. Damn wedding!

Re: Mozart complete works $99 at Sams Club..comments?

Come on, Mike. Fork out the dope!
I mean, every father needs to prepare himself in an appropriate and cultural way for something as important as the wedding of his beloved daughter.

A few quality hours in front of his HiFi speakers, with the likes of Bach, Händel and Mozart are actually proof how serious he is about the wedding. It's like holding on to the umbilical cord of civilization.

Oops, sorry. Is it inappropriate, perhaps, to mention umbilical cords at occasions like these?

Unfortunately, as Phil mentioned, the Bach set is up to $100 now (it was $91 this morning when I posted).

I wanted to wait a few days for the next billing cycle on the Mozart, but now I'm nervous. . .
