Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 1/21/07 - Best Buy/Circuit City/Target)

A friend of mine wanted me to find him a Wii, so I partook in the hunt for a Wii once again this morning.

Went to Best Buy around 8:45 a.m., didn't realize they opened at 11 a.m. on Sundays, saw that only 8 people were in line, so I drove over to grab some breakfast at Burger King, and came back at 9 a.m., and wound up 10th in line (was 11th, but a kid got back in his dad's car when the dad found out Circuit City opened at 10 a.m.). I would have gone to Circuit City, but I didn't know how much they got in, and I knew I had a sure thing at Best Buy since I was 10th. It was cold, and started to rain, luckily I have an umbrella in the car. At 10:30 a.m., they issued vouchers, and I was amazed at the stack of vouchers the guy still had after handing me my voucher, the 10th one. Best Buy ended up with 36 Wiis (20 minimum was what was in the ad). I drove over to Circuit City and found out they got in 25 Wii's, but at that time, they were all sold. I drove back to pick up the Wii at Best Buy, but since the pickup/pay line was long, I browsed through the aisle, milled about the place, and finally got in line. I ended up being the 35th person in line to pay for a Wii, and as luck would have it, the 36th Wii looked like it got dropped and smushed, so I narily avoided getting that one, and it was very unlucky for the last guy in line.

From what I've read, Wii availability at Target was more of a regional thing, some places had Wiis in their regional sales circular, while other places did not (like mine).

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 1/21/07 - Best Buy/Circuit City/Target)

Most national reports have been pretty much the same - stores get in an allotment of anywhere from 10-70 consoles (BB and Target receiving far more than other retailers); lines that meet or exceed that amount form long before the store opens (anywhere from 3am to opening); vouchers are handed out, and units are sold out at opening. I feel bad for people back east who had to stand in very cold weather for hours!

The Wii is starting to look like "the little console that could", even taking into consideration its low price and low quantities. The PS3, though it remains popular, stays on store shelves longer due to its $600 price tag. I've already had three very casual opportunities to buy a PS3 this year already, but I've never once seen a Wii (or even a Wii-mote or nunchuck) in stock.

I might consider picking a Wii up later in the year, when it's not such a hassle. Looks like Nintendo probably moved 150,000 units just this morning! Amazing.

Well, finally got me a Wii today after 4 months of looking. Went to 2 walmarts this morning, one had none and when I got to the other one they had only one in the case and someone there was buying it. Feeling depressed at this point I still went ahead and asked the clerk if they had anymore. She went to the back to check the secure lockup and cameback with two. She gave me one and a guy behind me took the other. She said they had 5 total and in the 5 minutes I was there they sold 4 of them.

I finally got my Wii, at a Gamestop.
I have a friend that works there, and he said they usually gets small shipments of Fridays.

So some of you that still need one, might want to check out Gamestops around Friday mornings.

It may have felt like 4 months, but the Wii has only been out for a little bit more than 2 months.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 1/21/07 - Best Buy/Circuit City/Target)

I'm surprised you were able to get one at Target. Most Targets around the country do have them in stock right now but they are all also under orders to not sell any until Sunday (Feb. 11). So, Sunday morning at Target is the place to be if you are still looking for a Wii.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

This Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, is another opportunity to pick up a Wii console at Target and Circuit City (it could be a regional thing, though). You might have to show up a few hours early to get a place in line (no telling how many units will show up at each location).

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

The Wii's are still selling briskly.
We need another in the family and a console is not to be found.
Looks like all the B&M's here do not expect any further stock till April.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

It's been crazy. I got mine just before New Years. Since New Years, I have seen one unit at any store (and it was a lonely unit at the Best Buy entrance... well, not that lonely, it was gone by the time I left the store).

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

My local Circuit City had the Wii advertised for sale starting today (with vouchers given out an hour before store opening), but maybe this will help someone in the MDT or PDT zones.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

I was at work last night for about an hour. Best Buy is right on the way home, and for no real reason I felt compelled to stop. Glad I did, for as it turns out they had just received a shipment of Wii's about an hour prior. Snagged one of those bad boys ASAP.

They were holding the shipment in the back, but I caught a glimpse when the guy grabbed mine - looked like they had 20-30. I suppose they're all gone by now...

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

I was on the lookout for Wii reviews when I stumbled upon a review site. I immediately noticed the list of various merchants selling Wii online. Although stocks are still limited, they're coming in slow steady supply. All items are sold in bundles which means that they come in complete sets including Wii Sports.

It's nice to see remotes fully stocked at target these days

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

Just bought a Wii last week as I caught the new shipment at the local Best Buy. When I entered the store they had 15 units. By the time I left 30 min later, they were down to 7. Went back to the same store today and no more Wii's in stock and no idea when the next shipment was coming.

The sales of this console are still unbelieveable. If the PS3 fails to win this generation (whch appears almost an impossibility at this point in time with the Wii's sales), I think Sony will be in big big trouble seeing as most of their profits come from Spiderman movies these days!

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

FYI, I was looking for a Wii game at my local Sears (I had a gift card I need to use up), and a customer got a Wii, they may still have some available.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

An IDC analyst's prediction of 2009 being the year "supply meets demand" for the Wii (at the brick & mortar level) doesn't sound quite so far-fetched now:

http://gaming.monstersandcritics.com...ges_Until_2009

Again, the point isn't that they can't be found or bought AT ALL. They ARE showing up on store shelves. Many people on these forums see them all the time. Anyone with the luck, or anyone willing to do the research and take the extra time, can find one. (Probably Maybe - I have yet to spot one "in the wild"). Of course, the supply from Nintendo is so low that many who ARE willing to make the effort are those making a tidy profit on eBay. (thankfully at this point only about $100 over retail - capitalism at work, people)

I can walk into any retailer in my area and pick up a PS3 or an XBOX360 with no problems, no effort, 100% assured. No need to scour forums or wait in line.

Sony should take a risk, and capitalize on the 360's failure problems and the Wii's scarcity problems. Start an Apple-style marketing campaign of some sort.

When I find a Wii in 2009, hopefully by that time Wiimotes will contain rechargeable batteries!

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

If Nintendo has ever said anything I don't agree with, in regards to their current strategy to dominate the household market, I can most certainly not remember what it is, or when it was said.

I, for one, am not particularly surprised at the shortage, since Nintendo knows that ramping up production to meet demand would eventually result in having to ramp production down again, a costly endeavor. Simply continuing the consistent - albeit currently insufficient - output is a much cheaper approach.

Currently obtaining a Wii requires a widget or two on the desktop, a working alarm clock (for that 5 AM wake up call on the weekends), a good friend or two at a B&M like Target or Best Buy, and a little bit of luck and patience.

However, until I can freely obtain a system, I am going to hold off on this impressive little console. The wife is definitely someone who I think would enjoy this system far more than any of the other consoles I own. I, for one, shall just have to wait a little while longer.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

yeah I agree. the only reason I have mine, is because I played it one day, and the next day I called my cousin who works at Circuit City and asked when the next batch was coming in. he said tomorrow and bought one for me. This was over a month or two ago. its easier now albeit not by much though.

Re: Looking for the Wii? (Update 2/11/07 - Circuit City/Target)

I think keeping the demand really high also helps Nintendo maintain the "this is THE cool item" effect.

But damn, I got a chance to watch the E3 stuff on the Wii Board and other new games.. damn, looks like I have a lot of purchases ahead!
