Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

Good to see Fox still releasing new to DVD catalog titles. A thing I no longer take for granted anymore [cough] Columbia, Paramount [/cough]

Though there's nothing in this batch for me.

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

CINDERELLA LIBERTY is a great film, it was shot in Seattle, one of Caan's best role, JOHN & MARY was never ever released on video (except in Japan), not one of Hoffman's best, but still interesting.

Good to see Fox do a box set based on a theme, like Warner (nice to see ADVENTURES OF A YOUNG MAN getting released). I believe THE BLUE BIRD with Liz Taylor & Jane Fonda will be steeeting the same day, another "never released on video" title. Kudos for Fox for going into their vault. Now if only they do the same with the MGM library.

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

Hope they publish some specs soon.
Will Sun Also Rises have its original 4.0 track?
Adventures of a Young man has run on Fox movies for years in a bad mono master. Have they found the missing stereo track?

Still waiting for a release of 1960's "CAN-CAN" with Frank Sintra and Shirley MacLaine - why hasn't FOX released this one yet?

"The Blue Bird" is the Shirley Temple version.

Thrilled that Snows Of Kiliminjaro will be rescued from public domain hell. Hopefully Fox will do Beneath the 12 Mile Reef the same honor. Looking forward to John And Mary and Other Side Of Midnight too. Cinderella Liberty never did it for me.

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

Dvd Empire is also listing the "Shirley Temple Collection Vol 3", including "Stand Up And Cheer" , "The Little Princess" and "The Blue Bird" for a 3-27-2007 release as well as "Michael Shayne, Private Detective Collection: Volume 1" including "Michael Shayne, Private Detective", "The Man Who Wouldn't Lie", "Sleepers West" and "Blue, White, & Perfect " for a "3-20-2007 ". Yes, Fox finally get back on track, when the subject is classic titles.

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

Well, that would actually be the fifth Shirley Temple boxed colection, but no matter. I'm disappointed that STAND UP AND CHEER was included. Shirley is barely in it when some of her really great star roles like in POOR LITTLE RICH GIRL and STOWAWAY need a release.

Thrilled that THE LITTLE PRINCESS will be recued from public domain hell (the VHS release of it on Fox was beautiful), and THE BLUE BIRD has always been a favorite.

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

I've never seen "The Other Side of Midnight" but supposedly it was highly anticipated, and Fox wouldn't let theaters show it unless they also agreed to show a somewhat less-anticipated film called "Star Wars".

Great catch! Even better than Fox is only putting a $29.99 MSRP on this set! They finally realized that a $60 MSRP for 4 film box sets wasn't going to move many units. These films are highly enjoyable and I will be looking forward to getting the set.

EDIT: Fox is also releasing this as a 2 disc set which makes sense for these relatively short films. Some of their 4 film boxes are of movies that easily could have been put on double features.

Looking forward to seeing Under My Skin, a late-career John Garfield film that's never been available on home video.

A great move. My one problem with the Mr. Moto set was having four films, all under 70 minutes, on four discs, each in a separate keepcase. The entire Moto series, with bonus features, could easily fit on four discs, and with dual-slimline cases it would take up only slightly more room than a standard keepcase.

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

I'm pleased to see that 'John And Mary' is being released at last. I was always fond of this film when it originally came out, and it's never been on home video before as far as I know. It will be interesting to see it again after about 35 years!

Another of Hoffman's films yet to appear on DVD is 'Straight Time'. It would be good to have that one too, but OTTOMH I'm not sure which studio owns the rights.

Its controlled by Warner Bros. I like th moody Dave Shire score (always thought it had a nod to the 3 blind mice) and the fact it pulls no punches that our lead is no hero nor a anti-hero, just a guy who is a unredeemable criminal.

Straight Time is easily one of my top five most wanted titles. It is rather telling that when Hoffman was featured on Inside the Actor's Studio James Lipton skipped right over any discussion of Straight Time. However, it is a Warner title and I am reasonably confident that we'll see it released sometime in the near future.

On a related note, there was a Variety article a few years back about a members only film club made up of various young filmmakers--founded by Roger Avary, James Gray, and Mark Romanek--who set up screenings of rarely seen films. Straight Time was screened and Hoffman showed up to talk about his motivations for doing the project, etc.

Variety article

I agree about the David Shire score. There was a fairly recent Shire promo compilation that featured selections from [b]Straight Time[b].

I'm quite excited about The Sun Also Rises. I thought it was caught in some sort of limbo and wouldn't be released? But I guess that's been taken care of! Good on The Snows of Kilimanjaro too...Double Ava Gardner!

WOW!!!!!!
This is great news! I agree these are very enjoyable little programmers. I've seen Sleepers West and Blue, White, and Perfect- in fact, I still have them on VHS- but this will be an easy upgrade. Never thought We would see the rest of the Mike Shayne series. Wow, I'm reeling...

Well my wish has been answered more quickly than I could have hoped for! Warners have announced 'Straight Time' for release on March 27th. Excellent!

Re: New Fox Catalog Titles for 3/6/07

That's a great looking box. But a $70 price tag? Even by Fox standards that's insane. I'll have to hold off until DDD has a Fox boxset sale.

The artwork is simply gorgeous. Good job by Fox. A little pricey, but meh, who cares.
