TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

Thread Starter
ThinkFilm is releasing Terry Gilliam's Tideland on DVD Febuary the 27th after a nearly non-existant theatrical campaign. I'll be glad to finally see it... the road to getting this film released has been a very long and sad one for ol' Terry.

Totally off topic, but I don't feel like starting a new thread for these: Big (with Tom Hanks) and That Thing You Do! are both getting 2-disc "director's cut" releases on 3/27 according to my distributor. There's more double-dips coming than you can shake a stick at...

Thanks Elijah. I actually in a thread I started a week ago or so enquired about what was goig on with the "Big" special edition. That answers that.

I wouldn't exactly get excited to see it.

It has to be Gilliam's worst film, and that's saying something.

There's a really good interview with Terry Gilliam over at The Onion AV Club, where he discusses the audience reactions to the film. At one point, he says:
Quote:
AVC: What would be the ideal individual response to the film? What would you like to have people walk out of it thinking?

TG: I don't care. That's the truth. I want people to come out with whatever it is they come out with. I don't want to limit it by what I think. I love the film, personally. I wallow in it. There's enough people like me, it seems, to get our money back. [Laughs.] Mike Palin, he saw it very, very early when we hadn't put the music on and we were still cutting and so it was longer. At the end of the screening, he left. And I thought, "Uh oh, he didn't hang around for a chat." The next morning, I called him up and said, "Come on Mike, what do you really think?" And he said, "Well, there's a lot I didn't like. But I woke up this morning and I can't get it out of my head. The images, the ideas are spinning around there. They won't let me sleep. It's either the best film you ever made, or the worst." [Laughs.] And I thought that was fantastic. I liked the idea of something that can get that kind of extreme reaction. I keep promising people, "If you see it, then have dinner afterward, at least you're going to have something to talk about." [Laughs.]

To be honest, I'd much prefer people to like it than not like it, but one of the things that did happen when we were editing—normally, when we pre-screen a film, I can talk to the test viewers afterward to get a sense of what they think. And we were finding people didn't really know how to talk about it yet. And we gave them an e-mail address and said, "When you're ready, write me." It takes some people five or six days, a week, before they got their thoughts in order. And then it was like, "God, it changed the way I look at the world," people would say. "It's made me completely re-examine how I think about things." And I thought, "Well, that's great. That's fantastic." They're all interesting responses. I think what has been most intriguing is, those who don't like it, don't want to really even talk about it.

Personally, I'm excited about seeing it. Everything I've heard about the disparate audience reaction makes it sound fascinating.

Hey it's Gilliam. Can't be bad. Plus it has a Vincenzo Natali short!

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

I can't wait to see this... well, I've been waiting, so I guess I can.

Good or bad, I can't imagine it's worse than Brothers Grimm.

And again, as stated above, it's Gilliam! He's definately one of my favorite directors, so Tideland will be worth absorbing.

Isn't that funny. I couldn't stand Grimm but I just bought it for my mother for Christmas. She loves it!

One of my Top 5 fav directors. Seems like most of his films take multiple viewings before I grow to love them. I can't wait to see Tideland. I was wondering what the hell happened to it.

EDIT: Just read the interview from the link above. Reminds me why I love Gilliam so much. I'll be blind buying this when it comes out next year. I really really need a Gilliam commentary in r1.

I didn't hate it, I just thought it wasn't as good as it could have been. But then again, I hated Jabberwocky at first, and now appreciate it much more.

Gilliam is absolutely in my top 5 list, too. Maybe even top 3.

I guess I didn't hate it either. Just disappointed my one and only time. I"ll watch it again with mom at Christmas. Maybe I'll love it and she'll hate it this time. I didnt' like Brazil, Fear & Loathing or Time Bandits the first time. Weird.

The Gilliam/Palin commentary on Jabber is really good. It actually enhances my enjoyment in all future viewings with or without commentary. Like when Gilliam talks about the king just piling rags on top of himself. I didn't even notice before.

I was going to say that myself, no lie. Maybe Top 3. But I just thought at least Top 5.

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

I've loved almost every Gilliam film I've seen. But I couldn't stand Time Bandits. I thought it was dreadful. Still, it's Gilliam, so that alone means I'll eventually have to give it a second chance.

I'm looking forward to Tideland.

Well, since I own it, I do plan to re-visit it at some point. Perhaps I'll get to it in a couple weeks when I have two weeks off for the holidays.

You're going to keep us waiting.

Maybe it'll perform it's magic this time. Although for me it's so much nostalgia I don't even know if it's an actual good movie or not. Certainly the Robin Hood scene and the scenes with Evil and his minions is great comedy. Often the effects are very appealing to watch. I really like the kid who is living the hum drum life and suddenly he's thrust into the stories he reads, even....

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
becoming the son of a king.

Well, I've convinced myself, Time Bandits is a GREAT film. Worthy #10 on my Top 10 list.

Don't be surprised if one day soon a half dozen "little people" arrive at your door ready to give you a forced screening of a certain movie!

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

As with many, I was dissapointed with Brothers Grimm. I think for me, It was TGs first movie that included large amounts of CG affects. TG was one of the few that still used almost exclusivley physical effects, which I love and respect. When a director starts getting into CG, sometimes it makes their films seem, I dunno...Lazy? Gilliam has the right creative mind for Grimm, but I don't think it translated well.

Anyway, this isn't a Grimm thread, so I guess that said, Grimm was my only Gilliam Dissapointment ever, and so I'll welcome Tideland.

It's a great movie, possibly one of his best. Right up there with Brazil. Jodelle Farland deserves a oscar for her role.

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

I will blind buy this one. I hated 12 Monkeys when I saw it at the theater and then grew to appreciate it the more I watched it. The same with Brazil. They are now too of my favorite films.

Gilliam is the tye of director, for me, that requires repeated viewings to appreciate.

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

Very true, Parker. I've only seen the Fisher King once and didn't really enjoy it. I can honestly say that I've loved Brazil and 12 Monkeys from the get-go, but I need to go back and watch Jabberwocky and Time Bandits, not to mention see Fear & Loathing, The Brothers Grimm and Tideland.

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

Saw the movie last month. Found it to be almost indescribable. Although I actually said that I thought it was the most screwed-up movie I had ever seen, and that says a lot. It is a very good movie, and I think it has the potential to become a cult classic in the tradition of Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Still, despite the fact that I didn't love the movie, I will still be buying this because the movie has stuck with me, but I need to see it again to find out if it is possible that I can actually love it.

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

Having seen the movie I think it was terrible. Gilliam has never be good with the pacing of his films. Also, Jennifer Tilly just wasn't good at all. In fact, I found most of the acting to be average. Just a story that tries to be an adventure and personally I found it to fail on most accounts.

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

My copy came in the mail yesterday. I haven't had a chance to watch it, but I was really surprised by the amount of extras since I hadn't seen any specs listed when I ordered. There's an introduction and commentary by Gilliam on the film itself, deleted scenes with Gilliam commentary, green screen footage with Gilliam commentary, a documentary on Gilliam with Gilliam commentary(!), a making-of featurette, a couple interviews, and the trailer. Even if the movie turns out to suck (and after Brothers Grimm I'm ready for that possibility) the disc will be worth it for the sheer volume of Gilliam.

The only downside is that the best quote they could find for the back cover is from Harry Knowles.

I liked Brother Grimm a lot.. :p

Re: TIDELAND - Terry Gilliam's latest on DVD 2/27

Man, this movie can't catch a break. First it gets released to, like, one theater for two weeks ... with no ad campaign. And now they release it on DVD...

AND IT'S ANAMORPHIC FULL FRAME.

Yes, it's 16:9, instead of 2.35:1 ... and, apparently, it's pan-and-scan, not open matte (I haven't checked that myself yet).

This sucks. This was one of my favorite movies of the past several years, and now I want to return the DVD, except that I know that, due to the smallness of it, it will never get a better release.

We need to get this fixed the same way Lord Of War was. Don't resign yourself to MAR, people! Does anybody know how to contact Thinkfilm?
