Re: PS3 Blu Ray Playback... First Impressions

Alright, I've got a Samsung 4092 720p set. I'm planning to use component cables with an optical cable on the PS 3 right now (I'm not ready to start tearing out drywall just yet). Am I going to have any issues with playing blu-ray movies?

Thanks,

Jason

Re: PS3 Blu Ray Playback... First Impressions

NO, You will set the PS3 to 720p, and you will be fine... I think the 720p Issue is on games that are mastered in 720p..

Unfortunately the PS3 currently does not output 720p for BD playback, 480p/1080i/1080p only.

Yeah, that's pretty stiff indeed, compared with the majority of HD DVDs at Amazon for only $17.95 (after promotional discount).

Um, it's the same price for the BDs there too.

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

Certainly not. Although they carry several $19.95 - $ 2.00 = $17.95 BDs indeed (your Black Hawk Down being one, so the price you payed is indeed a bit stiff), the majority is $25.15 ($27.95 - $2.80) and $21.55 ($23.95 - $2.40) and the like.

Well, Cees, now you've found out why the majority of BD purchases are NOT made at Amazon!

Because you love to pay $20 (and with an exclamation point) instead of $17.95?

Re: PS3 Blu Ray Playback... First Impressions

Eric is right.

The one problem I have with my PS3 (just bought the 20 gig model) is the lack of 720P downscaling with 1080p BD movie software. I have a 720P projector and it would look better if the PS3 would do the downscaling and send me a native 1280 x 720 image. When my PJ gets a 1080i image (what the PS3 is sending it) it bobs to deinterlace which essentially results in a 540p image being upscaled to 720p. Of course, I still get the full swatch of horizontal resolution. And don't get me wrong... the image looks GREAT. But I know that better-produced 720p would look even better.

Of course, I know that native 1080p would look better still. So my real goal is to upgrade my projector and not even worry about 720P!

I was just at Walmart.com and while they do have some BD for 20 dollars they also have a ton for 39.99.. wtf is that all about.

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

buy.com
amazon.com
both higher then the hd dvd discs.

my walmart doesnt sell them.

target only has about 10 titles.

while it is only $2 dvdempire has the donner cut for a higher price.

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

Aren't some BD studios setting a higher MSRP for their releases? I believe Fox is guilty of this. The MSRP on "From Hell" is $39.95. Hard for stores to bring that price down to $20 and still make a profit. Also I thought catalog versus new release titles are priced differently as well. A real comparison would be a cross format release from Warner or Paramount.

Looking at three cross format titles from this week (prices per Amazon with no discounts applied)

A Christmas Story
HD-DVD: $19.99
Blu-ray: $19.95

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
HD-DVD: $19.99
Blu-ray: $19.95

The Architect
HD-DVD: $23.95
Blu-ray: $23.95

Unfortunately I'm not in that situation. I just purchased my 56" 720P Samsung not even a year ago and don't plan on upgrading any time soon. It is up to Sony to get everything working properly.

Re: PS3 Blu Ray Playback... First Impressions

I watched Xmen last night on BluRay via PS3, it had the best bass of any movie I have ever seen. The house exploding was just frigging incredible.

Re: PS3 Blu Ray Playback... First Impressions

Is there any discernible difference in PQ between component and HDMI? With my current TV, I've only got one HDMI input, thus either Blu or HD-DVD is gonna have to go analog.

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

I finally broke open my PS3 box and have stuff sort of set up. It's downloading the 1.3 firmware as I type this, then I think I may have it download some demos and video. I don't have my HDMI cable or optical cables yet, so I just have it hooked to my TV via the pack in composite/stereo RCA cable. I figured this way, once I receive my cables, I don't have to wait for anything

BTW how big is the 1.3 firmware, it seems to be taking awhile to download (our DSL here isn't the fastest either, it's only 512kbps )

I got mine last week, it is GREAT. I love the quiteness of it. Resistance is amazing. It gets MUCH better after the first couple chapters. So far i have MI 3, Ricky Bobby, Underworld, and Superman. MI 3 and Superman look great, gonna watch Underworld tommorow. Wifi works great too. Add me to your friends list = blazew0n

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

I got my 20gig PS3 on the weekend and hooked a 320 Gig external USB drive to it last night. I figured that the $100 I spent on the 320gig external was money better spent than putting it towards a mere 60 gig. I've got the PS3 hardwired to my network so the wi-fi wasn't a dealbreaker at all. Last night I streamed some HD recordings of Prison Break from the drive to the PS3 and they looked amazing. I love this thing!

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

I got a PS3 60GB model at the playstation store just a block away from where I work just yesterday, 12/12/06. I bought it during my lunch hour (I had my meal first, of course), and then I stood in line for about 40 minutes to get it.

I have not set it up yet. I hope to set it up this weekend. After work, I went to CC near where I live (just two block away), and bought the component cables for the PS3.

I have an "old" tw40x81 hdtv set at home with only component inputs. I hope I can watch soon some HD blu-ray movies since I did not find a game which appeals to me at this point in time.

ADDITION TO THIS POST: (12-28-2006)

Just today I bought BD remote control for the PS3, and when I was paying for it, I saw a bunch of PS3 box ready to be sold garthering dust behind the counter. There was nobody buying them at the Sony Playstation store here in San Francisco.

orestes

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

To save some money on BD: Don't forget that there's a booklet of $10 mail in BD rebates included in the box of PS3 + the unlimited $20 off $50 via Google checkout in Buy.com (thru end of December - free shipping/no tax via their snail mail).

$14-$20 on average thru Buy less $10 = $4-$10! (!<---yeah! ... I still remember the days when first batch of initial SDVD releases, everybody thought they are so expensively overprice and that their prices will never go down ... oh, well, everything is going cheaper/lower value including US$ ... the then >$5000 42" plasma/LCD TVs now selling for <$1000). 8 years from now, expect Dollar store to sell BD and HDDVDs .

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

Now I really want one. I didn't know it was so versitile. Is the 360 capable of having a bigger external hard drive or streaming files into it?

Re: Playstation 3,.... well who's got one?

There is a bigger Xbox 360 drive coming and you can stream via Windows Media Connect or XP Media Center Edition. If you are just looking to store MP3's and pictures without game saves, then you can always get a USB harddrive. The Xbox 360 will recognize up to a 32GB drive plugged directly to it.
