I did buy a USB IR remote adapter. I don't need it to do everything, When I use the PS3, I will use the blu tooth extra remote, but my wife likes using a single remote that is simple like the Harmony.

Thank you,

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I was just over at the Sony Style site. I know the 40GB model isn't up yet, but I was looking at what a component cable would cost. I was surprised to not find one!

Popped over to ebworld, where I found a couple of Mad Catz PS3 to component cables. Anyone have any comments on who makes a good component cable for the PS3? I plan to get a new HDMI capable amp, but won't be able to swing one until next year.

UPDATE: I took a second pass at Sony's site and found their cable for $19.99. Is this as good as any?

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Does your TV accept HDMI? You can run HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and audio from the PS3 to the receiver via optical (that's how mine's set up).

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

My Sanyo Z4 projector displays 720p. When I play a SD DVD doesn't it upscale the 480p to 720p when using component cable? Would the PS3 upscale it that much better than the Sanyo if I spent the money for a long (up the wall, over the ceiling, etc.) HDMI cable?

No HDMI for my TV. So component video and optical audio for me!

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

The PS3 does the best upscaling job with DVDs I've seen yet on my projector (720p), and exceeds the PJ's built-in scaling by a mile.

Also, it does the best job *downscaling* 1080p to 720p as it avoids the bob/weave deinterlacing that my PJ forces on 1080i input.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

If your TV has a DVI jack, then you can use an HDMI->DVI cable. My old TV had that (but died before I got a PS3).

I wouldn't worry too much about different component cables, unless you need to run a very long length. One is probably as good as another.

BTW, I'll add my admiration to DaViD's -- the PS3 is an *incredible* upscaler (which, in a bittersweet way, is totally killing my desire to upgrade my DVD collection to BD). It makes PS2 games look great too.

Monoprice.com is great for cables.

I just did a test with component cables and DVD-R discs. The upscaling is turned on as my Sanyo Z4 shows 720p input. When I set the upscaling to OFF, the Sanyo shows 480p input. I could see no difference in the picture between 480p and 720p input. If that's how it will work if I buy an HDMI cable, I just saved myself some money.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

you want an HDMI cable anyway bcs it avoids an additional d/a/d cycle for the video and will milk out every last drop of visible detail for all input-resolution sources (ie, even 480p over HDMI looks sharper, in general, than 480p over component).

HD over HDMI is the only way to go.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Hey Everybody,

On Tuesday 10/16, I ordered an 80gig PS3 with Motorstorm from Amazon for $599.

The price just dropped, and I called them and they are refunding the $100 immediately. I would recommend that forum members do the same.

Thank you,
Don

I purchased a PS3 at sam's this past week. Is the 5 free movie deal still going on? If so how does it work? Thanks.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Hello Bob,

I am not sure of the policy of posting links, but if you go to Amazon and then select the 80gig PS3, there is a link in the description that takes you to a pdf offer form. (I think it is called PS3 offer).

Thank you,
Don

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I have a chance to buy a used PS3 for $300.00 and I will talk to the wife about it tonight. I don’t have the time to read all 584 posts here so I was hoping you could answer a few quick questions.
  • Will it work well connected HDMI to an Optoma HD70 projector (720P)?
  • Does it support an IR remote? If not does the controller operate the DVD menus?
  • Is its internet access wireless only?
  • What are the issues playing PS2 games?
  • What id the difference (briefly) between the HDMI audio and the optical?
I want to use it as my primary Blue-ray player for a while.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

The PS3 works fine via HDMI at 720p. Not seen that projector in action but as the PS3 is a top rate Blu-ray player there should be no problems from the PS3 side.

It doesn't support IR remotes natively but you can buy IR receivers to plug into the PS3 if you need to. The SixAxis has all the controls for films via a pop up menu.

I'd recommend buying the PS3 remote though as once you've tried a bluetooth remote you'll wish everything else had one too!

You can use a standard ethernet cable if you need to.

The vast majority of PS2 games play fine on the PS3. It's not a priority for Sony though so they'll probably never get all games working...the most well known games are generally fine though.

The newer uncompressed audio formats need HDMI. If you want the best audio you'll need to have a lossless decoder. If you're just going to use the older lossy formats then there is no benefit in HDMI really.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Thanks, for the reply. My receiver does not have HDMI, so I will have to use the optical. Still get the 5.1 dolby right? I will run the HDMI straight to the projector.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Yeah, the older Dolby and DTS formats work perfectly via optical. It won't support the newer formats (below) are sending too much data for the optical cable to be able to handle so I believe that it downconverts them to stereo.

Dolby Digital Plus vs. current Dolby Digital
Supports true discreet 7.1 channels (technically, up to 13.1, but HD-DVD and Blu-Ray only support 8 audio channels)
up to 6 Mbps (vs. 448 Kbps)
can downconvert to Dolby Digital for backwards compatibility
mandatory for HD-DVD. optional for Blu-Ray
S/PDIF does not have enough bandwidth to carry it. HDMI and FireWire can.

Dolby TrueHD
large number of channels (unspecified)
lossless
supports metadata including dialogue normalization and dynamic range control.
mandatory for HD-DVD, optional for Blu-Ray

DTS-HD (which is the new name for DTS++, Premise)
virtually unlimited number of channels
can downconvert to DTS for backwards compatibility
can encode either lossless or lossy
Optional for Blu-Ray and HD-DVD

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

drobbins,

I have enjoyed my few short weeks with the PS3 80 gig. Like you, I don't have a HDMI receiver, but the sound is fantastic anyways. The image is breathtaking. I was also worried about the IR remote, as my wife likes the Harmony 890 we have. I bought a $15 remote adapter from NYKO, hooked the Harmony IR blaster to it, then had the Harmony learn the buttons. Super easy and now she is happy.

I can't say enough about the PS3
* It has quick access time
* It has 1080p image delivery
* It plays games (not that I am a gamer, but still, a cool option)
* It accesses the internet (great for system updates, or demos, or trailers) and it can do this via a hardwire or wirelessly.
* It is priced as a low end stand alone Blu Ray player

I think it is one of the best multi tasker's in my component system.

Let us know how it goes with the wife. (Also wives seem to dig Disney, let her know that Disney is on Blu Ray).

Good Luck,
Don

"Some other notes: We've learned that Sony's PlayStation 3 WILL be firmware updatable to BD-Java 1.1 compliance (expect news on this relatively soon) and likely (eventually) to 2.0 as well."

While this is not yet "official", still pretty good news. PS3 delivers!

Me and my missus have a clear understanding. I buy my electronic stuff (and films in weekly basis) and as long as I´m paying them in my own pocket, she doesn´t interfere (not sure why would she anyway..).

All those free game demo downloads make it an even cooler option for casual gamers who only play a little.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

It's already pretty much been confirmed indirectly, in the "I do Blu" event earlier this week fox announced that their first v1.1 film which will be Sunshine to be released in January.

In the announcement they stated that it would play on the PS3 straight out of the case.

That confirms that it'll happen by then but I'd expect it by the end of next week to be honest. This week Sony updated their PSP firmware with new features which require PS3 firmware v2.0 for you to be able to use them.

Whenever Sony have done this in the past the relevant PS3 firmware has always been released within two weeks but very often within one.

Sony stated a while back that v2.0 would actually include full BD profile 2 rather than just profile 1.1.

There was a report some time ago from the engineering team who develop the AV side of the firmware that it was profile 2 compliant before launch but that Sony decided to hold that back as it may have caused problems for other companies trying to sell Blu-ray players as the PS3 would have been cheaper, better quality and up to full spec even before profile 2 was required.

That could all be complete lies though lol!!

Well I talked to the wife today. I got the impression that a new one may be under the tree at Christmas. Guess I will have to wait. One more question. What is the hard drive for? What would I use 60gig for?

I have so many games downloaded I don't have time to install them!

That's why I'm not much of a gamer anymore. I'm lucky to stay awake for a 2 hr movie at night, but if I'm home on vacation I find my game addiction can be all to easily reawakened.

Then it's depressing when a game goes unfinished and I'm back to work, letting my real skils deteriorate.

It really depends on what you want to use your PS3 for.

It's a really good media centre so you can store videos, music and photos on it if you want to. The formats that are supported keep getting added to and one of the later Home videos showed DivX being used:

In Australia Sony are trying out a music download service which allows you to download music videos from a load of Australian artists. If you're interested in that just set yourself up an Australian account. While you're at it it may be worth making sure you have US/Can, UK, JP & HK accounts set up too as they all have different stuff available on them.

In the UK Sony will be offering the service to use the PS3 as a digital PVR and video download service too. That may take some time to cross to the US due digital TV being used to the extent it is over here.

I set up this thread for people wanting to set up different accounts: http://ntsc-uk.domino.org/showthread.php?t=77486

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Should I buy the Yamaha receiver RX-V659BL - $299 or the newer RX-V661BL - $399? The 661 has HDMI inputs but, the 659 does not. If I connect the PS3 using HDMI for sound and component for video will the Yamaha be able to send the video to my projector using component and play the sound from the HDMI input?
