The Toshiba HD A1 is a different story. Even with components, I find it to be much clearer than both the PS3 and the Add on. Also the sound quality cannot be touched by both. I have it connected through the 6 channel analog to my receiver and the sound is a lot more clear.

Are you running toslink or HDMI for the audio from the PS3?

Thanks for your help.

Paul,

This page explains the options and I believe the one you want is the On-Screen Playback Information (Select Button).

Optical only. I don't have an HDMI receiver. I won't be getting a new one until the HDMI 1.3 units come out. The new Denons are looking good.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I'm in the same boat. No wonder your Tosh sounds better... you're getting lossless!

When you/me get our next HDMI 1.3 receiver that should all change as we'll get *all* lossless codecs from all formats... both HD DVD and BD.

BTW, side note to others. I know we read about how HD DVD requires lossless codec support. Well, actually that's only true for Dolby Digital True HD. DTS-MA is *optional* on HD DVD just like BD and isn't decoded in any current HD DVD players. So both camps will benefit from HDMI 1.3 and the next-generation of receivers which should do internal decoding for everything.

David, can you please respond to my post regarding PCM 2.0 vs DD/DTS?

That would make sense. If you have it set lower than the +2 setting then it's limiting the output some way. What is the purpose of this setting?

More on the overscan issue... so far all the DVDs I've played are okay (the info is further left and doesn't get whacked).

is that for me? I thought I did... that I generally prefer the lossless PCM even in 2.0 over toslink to the multi-channel lossy DD/DTS tracks.

Keep in mind I'm talking about 2.0 PCM downmixed from lossless LPCM tracks to begin with... not a lossy DTS or DD track that's downfolded and output in LPCM form.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Just went out and bought a ps3 from BB. I had a tough time choosing between that and the A2, but in the end I felt that blu ray is probably the safest way to go with the format war.

Anyway, the only movie I bought was World Trade Center. The picture was good, but I was most impressed with the quality of the sound. It was amazing how superior this aspect of the format was in comparison with a standard upconverter. Any opinions on what the best quality blu ray movies are? I am curious what the best movies look like on blu ray. Does anyone know if World Trade Center is considered a good transfer on blu ray?

There's a couple threads on this subject. Look at the BD catalog, decide what you like the best. Most titles look & sound great (not *all* of course, there's a few stinkers out there).

Yes.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I can tell you the ones that have impressed me the most:

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III

THE SEARCHERS

FANTASTIC FOUR

CORPSE BRIDE

BLACK HAWK DOWN and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN seem to have gotten the best reviews apart from the ones I mentioned, but I don't have either of them.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

For sound Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, Speed, and Monster House from the ones I've heard/seen. The latter IMHO was better story-wise than Ice Age 2 or The Wild for an animated flick. The PQ is marred only because the filmmakers decided to add fake film grain to a completely clean CGI rendering.

For an all over the place, and inconsistent soundfield go with Kung Fu Hustle, but I attribute that to being a Chinese production with a limited budget. The PQ is not the best Blu-Ray out there, but passable with a fun and goofball story line. The SFX heavy fight sequences put The Matrix sequels to shame.

(I shortened your quote, and I did not intend to take your words out of context.)

If you are using a 720p TV, make sure your PS3 is outputting 1080i resolution. If not, the PS3 will output 480p for BluRay discs, because it won't convert from 1080i/p to 720p.

That's the mistake I made. After I made that change, the picture looked much, much better.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I had a strange skip tonight while watch The Brothers Grimm - for about 1-2 seconds half waiy through the movie, the image went off the screen (almost like when you start the PS3 up as the HDMI gets engaged), but the audio stayed on the entire time. Kind of weird.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

I had a similar experience with the Pirates: DMC DVD over the weekend. Scanned back and tried it again and it played through fine. I've read that the hdmi cables can be finicky so maybe that's it?

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

BrettB,

I couldn't re-create the problem either. I don't believe it's cable related - I think it's the machine. Hopefully, firmware updates will correct this issue at some point in time - and maybe since the PS3 is more like a PC than anything, something like this will happen once in a great while. Now, if it's happening more often, then that's a problem.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

The PS3 I have is going back to Target as soon as they find me a new unopened 20GB (they sold me a return ) As such, it is firmware 1.1 (not sure if that matters in these regards).

The only other problem I've had was a lock-up the first time I played a DVD+RW. Have played other +RWs since just fine. I use the PS3 everyday and am very impressed with the disc handling. It just seems so solid in that regard.

A little OT; How is the PS3 as a computer? We are in need of a new computer and it occured to me that the PS3 might suffice for our limited computer needs.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

BTW,

for some reson (fingers crossed) my lock-up problems seem to have gone away. I've had hitch-free playback for some time now, and two days ago updated to firmware 1.32 and have continued to be lock-free.

Hmmm. Here's hoping!

Target did the same damned thing to me. Is this practice even legal? Walmart was doing the same. In fact, I ran across several opened 20 gig units - yet all 60 gig units were new. I had to go to Circuit City to find the last unopened one in my area.

My guess is the reason why so many 20 gigs were opened is because they were either photographed to be sold on eBay before the crazy demand settled down or people were just buying them (who had no intentions of keeping them) to check them out for a few days and then returning them.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

Firmware 1.5 is up now, which fixes all scaling problems with PS2 and PS1 games only. It also cleans up the DVD over HDMI problems with unnatural artifacting considerably.

I think I may have an answer as to why so many folks have reported Target selling them "opened" PS3's.... here is my hunch anyway.

I was back hom in Indy a week or so before Xmas and was at Target shopping with the wife. I went into the electronics dept. and low and behold there sat a 20GB PS3 in the case.

Already owning a 60GB PS3 that I got back in Cali before heading to Indy...I called up a buddy of mine who wanted a PS3 (previously he had told me that he didn't care if he got the a 20GB or 60GB) but he didn't answer his phone.

I decided to buy the PS3 for him. About 30 minutes after buying, my buddy called me back and he had actually already bought one elsewhere that same day. So, being near the Target I purchased it from...I went back to return it.

The CSR at the returns desk proceeded to break the seal and look inside. I was shocked...as it was completely factory sealed (having just purchased it 30 minutes earlier!!!) and I asked her why she would do that, especially now since they probably couldn't sell it to someone else who might have wanted it. She never really gave me an answer besides "we have to" but I guess they were checking for people switching out the PS3 with a rock or something..I dunno.

But anyways, I think Target CSR's were told to open them up...even if they were sealed. Crazy stuff.

Yes, it's called "brick in the box"

Crooks even go thru the trouble of buying a shrinkwrap machine to buy and "return" high $$$ items with something else. That's one reason why companies have resorted to the (pain in the ass) hard to open plastic cases as well (it also helps prevent in store theft/shrink).

Those who do this deserve jail and a severe public flogging.

Re: Official Playstation 3

I'll see if I can find an answer to this dilemma of open PS3's being sold at Target. My best friend is a Target store team leader. He should be able to give me some insight.

I returned an unopened (by me) 60gb PS3 about a week ago. I had picked it up before Christmas but never had time to play it so I just decided to return and do something else with the money for right now. They asked if anything was wrong, I told them I never opened it and they didn't do any sort of check on it. So just like everything Target does, it must be store dependent.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray Player Thread

Is anyone else excited about the revelation of the long-fabled scaler?
Details here:
http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/ps3scaler/
And so we arrive at last to the most recent development, the late January PlayStation 3 SDK update. Amongst the newer versions of the various tools included in the SDK lies a new function: the ability for developers to use some of the functionality of the fabled hardware scaler, a scaler many previously doubted existed at all. Interestingly enough, "some" is the key word when describing the unlocked functionality; SCEI only gave access to hardware accelerated horizontal scaling. Horizontal scaling on its own cannot upscale a 720p image into 1080p/i --this would require both horizontal and vertical scaling. Hence, the newly exposed scaler functionality is not enabled in the PS3's user interface directly, but instead will still require developer support to work.

Baby steps...I wish they wouldn't be so coy about it all.

The thing is, my initial unit had clearly been used; it had scratches and fingerprints on the unit, plastic pulled apart inside, etc. Unless, of course, some service rep handled the unit in a rough manner.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray Player Thread

OK, I read all 8 pages of this thread, so if I missed the answer to these questions, please point me to the proper post! It all blurs together, and the BB employees didn't know a thing about the product except "it is an awesome gaming system".

Bought a 60GB PS3 today. I haven't opened it yet, because I'm waiting to find out a couple of things...

1. Will this upconvert my standard def DVDs? (saw the question earlier in the thread, must have missed the answer)

2. Will 4:3 content be pillarboxed, or do I have to manually change my display settings?

My display is a Mitsubishi WS-55313, which does not have an HDMI input (have to take that damn cable back now - I forgot I didn't have it!). So I guess I'm stuck using the PS3 component outputs.

Not *yet*. An update is coming, probably late March. DVD thru HDMI at 480p looks pretty good though. Just turn off the NR in the menu.

It's proper OAR.

Don't knock the component cables. That's how I currently have mine setup and it looks very nice. Absolutely no complaints or problems here.

Just an FYI...reportedly at AVS and some other forums, some are experiencing Blu-ray movie playback issues after upgrading to 1.5 firmware.

Re: Official Playstation 3 Blu-Ray player Thread

There is a discussion here about the 1.5 upgrade as well. Check it out over in this thread.
