Yes, and that was a standard 24p movie transferred as 25p. That's why I was shocked.

Wow. Took only 5 days to get this from the UK. I know I'm a movie geek, but it's kind of cool owning a Harry Potter film in High Definition. Felt the same way when Batman Begins & Superman Returns were in my little hands.

Hope to give it a spin soon...

Technically, it could be done, but why would anyone want to do this? All HD displays in Europe accept 60Hz signals from external video sources via component or HDMI connections, therefore films can be played back at the correct speed natively.

As far as I know, no reputable studios are considering releasing speeded-up HD DVD releases, and I've heard the first-generation European Toshiba players will not even play back such titles out-of-the-box. A firmware upgrade may allow this in the future but is currently unnecessary due to lack of such software.

Just had time for a few scenes this afternoon. Looked fantastic. The detail is rather good compared to the already good SD-DVD. Sometimes subtle things like tiny shadow details help make the experience that much richer. The HD-DVD of this Potter film is certainly visibly better than the SD.

You guys who are waiting for the U.S. release will be quite pleased when you get it....

Re: Harry Potter set for UK release on HD-DVD 11/20

Watched the entire movie tonight. Wow. The HD-DVD of Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire is certainly a reference disc.

Really enjoyed the film tonight. Funny how a new format being so good can elevate the experience. I don't think it looked this good in the theater. Of course I was rather tired my first theatrical viewing.

This HD-DVD looks lavish on a HD monitor: Rich colors, deep blacks, great shadow detail.

After watching the movie I thought I would do an unusual comparison this evening. I was curious if there would be any improvement on a plain jane 480i tv. Hooked up the Toshiba HD-A1 to my bedroom TV. It's a 20 inch Sanyo 480i max resolution. Played the standard def dvd of Goblet of Fire....then the HD-DVD. Both were set the same way; 480i.

Noticeable differences! It's like someone just cleaned my TV screen with Windex when watching the HD-DVD. Just a cleaner more tight image. Everything on screen looks solid where the sd dvd has that shimmering look in background scenes and much much noisier picture.

I know firsthand the visible difference on a HD monitor but was surprised the amount of improvement even watching on a very basic bedroom TV. Cool.

You guys who are wanting this should get it now. Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire in HD-DVD looks and sounds tremendous.

Thanks, Tim!

Apparently modern standard TV-sets have "room" for visible improvement if the horizontal resolution (as offered by HD) is better. That's a great bonus of HD!

Based on your review, I wonder why I didn't buy the European release yet!

Well it will set you back about $40! ...certainly an impulsive purchase but I just had to get it. One of those "must haves" we convince ourselves of .

This TV in my bedroom came from Wal Mart, a 20 inch model Sanyo Flat Screen. It's a good set. But yeah, if the source is better then it will show on the display in spite of only producing 480i. I think the lack of image noise in dark scenes stood out the most. The opening scene where the snake comes out & crawls around in dark was much cleaner and detailed on the HD-DVD disc.

It's a disc worthy of one's HD collection.

I will have to agree with Tim. Personally I think the video quality is better than King Kong and Batman Begins and the sound is better also.

Well, I used Play-dot-com, and even with the devaluated $ (devaluated suddenly this week to about €0.77, I believe), the price is still lower than that:

Item : Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire
Price : EUR 26.99
Quantity : 1
Delivery Cost : Free

Especially that free delivery cost (I'm not sure that goes for the US too) is making a difference!
But yes, it's still more than you may expect for a US release in the future.

Cool deal Cees! ...Look forward to reading your impressions. I hope I haven't gone overboard thus making your expectations too lofty

Enjoy the disc.
