Given how much of Millar's "Wanted" made it to the big screen treatment (i.e. not much at all), I'd have to pass on anything Millar wanted to do with Superman on the big screen.

How many times does it need to be said? Superman Returns didn't lose money! It made a lot of money! Just not as much as some people thought it should - which really isn't fair since the studio saddled the movie with the costs of all the aborted starts on the film throughout the 90s (Kevin Smith, Tim Burton, McG, Nicolas Cage, etc., etc.).

I'm looking forward to Bryan Singer's next Superman film.

I wasn't a big fan of Singer's Superman Returns. Everyone here knows that. But Millar is absolutely the last guy I would want anywhere near the property. And Wanted was much more of a hit for what Bekmembatov brought to it than what Millar brought. I'll be sad if Millar is getting credit for it.

What's weird is that I remember reading Mark Millar's initial thoughts on Superman Returns, and he was extremely pleased with the film.

Millar is an attention-whoring loudmouth. Back when his Wanted comic came out he was bragging that Eminem was dying to be in the movie and that turned out to be bull. He also claimed to have inside information on the Superman casting for Superman Returns and that didn't pan out either. This new round sounds like more of the same (the article speculates as much).

I find it hard to believe Warner is going to wait another 6 months to make a decision. I am sure they want something in at least pre-production before then. But, who knows.

...just as soon as he's fixed Vakyrie. Assuming, of course, he can figure out what's wrong with it in the first place. And if he can't-since Cruise's stock is pretty low right now, he should at least be able to shift the blame to him.

I guess I just don't get the Singer hate. You can't deny his talent behind the camera. I thought even Singer made it clear that he wouldn't take the same approach to the next film.

Chris, Don't get me wrong. I enjoy Singer's work. I just didn't like what he did with Superman Returns. If he want's to do a reboot. I am fine with him doing it. I also didn't mind Spacey and Routh...Bosworth didn't work for me. I also think that the shuttle/plane rescue would have been the greatest way to introduce the world to Superman if this was origin movie. I just didn't like the idea it was a sequel to a 30yr old movie. That Lex is a common criminal who is commiting the same crime as the first movie. Hated the fact that Supes would leave Earth for 5yrs and DESPISED the fact that they had a kid. So if Singer wants to redo the movie. I don't even need an origin story. Just start off where Lex is in charge of Lexcorp. And Lois and Clark are both single and not parents working at the Daily Planet.

And he said he would take a different approach. Which is great. Problem is that you are stuck with the above...Lois with Richard, the kid and Lex as common criminal.

I think the article has it wrong in regards to it being the Bryan Singer Superman. I think it was McG or Brett Ratner when they were attached to the project who approached Will Smith.

Looks like Louis Leterrier might've been offered a chance to directed the next Superman. This is all pretty confusing. First with Bryan Singer locked to direct, then Mark Millar talking about him maybe taking over and now this Leterrier quote. It looks to me WB doesn't know what the hell it wants at this point.

They are going to reboot this again. SR was a good movie. Routh was great. All they needed was a Supervillain. I guess they are regretting the Kid. Well those studio ass's should have nixed that part. The plot could have been better but otherwise I liked it.

They're going to have to make a move soon to get this in the theaters in 2010. Delay by a year and risk the onslaught of Marvel movies coming in 2011. Still hoping Singer gets to make his sequel.

Just watched Superman Returns again and I think its a pretty good flick.. it definitely gets a large amount of unfair criticism. Is there any word if this sequel is really moving forward? With Dark Knight breaking records left and right, you would think WB and DC would be all over this to see if the sequel would improve at the box office like Batman (of course to a lesser extent). I for one hope to see Superman on the big screen hopefully by that 2010 release date.

The sequel (titled "Superman: The Man of Steel") is moving forward, only WB doesn't seem too sure what direction they want to go in. Writer Mark Millar is said to be putting together a pitch with a "famous action director" in hopes of doing the next film (his association with Marvel will probably be an issue for DC), while "Superman Returns" director Bryan Singer (who was stung by the lukewarm reaction the film garnered in a lot of circles) is inked for the sequel, but many speculate that he has fallen out of favor with the studio.

Singer is currently putting the finishing touches on "Valkyrie" (which is receiving strong early buzz) and will soon meet with WB brass on what he intends to do with 'The Man of Steel'. It is likely that Singer will be back (if the studio likes what they hear), but the recent success of "The Dark Knight" is putting added pressure on whoever ends up making 'The Man of Steel' because fair or unfair, "Superman Returns" was seen as a disappointment to a fair share of people and WB doesn't want to "drop the ball" with the follow-up.

Actor Brandon Routh continues to say in interviews that he expects to start shooting the sequel next spring and all indications are that he's right. Regardless of whether or not Singer is directing, 'The Man of Steel' will start filming within the next eight months. WB already has a tentative summer 2010 release date set for the movie (the Independence Day holiday frame). Expect to hear some sort of movement on the project within a few months.

I like Singer & Routh but I hate the kid idea & the continuation of the Donner movies. I feel as long as Routh & Singer are involved we will be stuck with the kid. So I'm leaning toward wanting a reboot.

I've only seen SR once, but the movie has no aged very well in my mind. The more I think about it and the more I dislike it. The idiotic Lex plot, his characterization as a mere thug, Lois, the bizarre color palette, the somewhat muted feel of the entire movie, and of course the goddamn kid.

Bottom line is that I simply dislike Singer's vision of the material and would very much like to see another's take on it.

I enjoy SR for the most part, it's much better then III and IV, but I do hate the kid plot. I just want a fun and entertaining Superman movie no matter who directs it.

If WB is about to open the director carousel again on this project, I hope they get one that will stay with the current look of the Superman character (not necessarily the look of the SR film). Meaning I don't want to see any wild ideas like a black rubber or metal suit and giant spiders, you know, the stuff that almost was before Singer came along.

I think The Dark Knight might buy Singer some leash for Man of Steel, because he can argue Batman Begins didn't do much more than Superman Returns and look how strongly that sequel played.

Of course I don't think Superman Returns sales on DVD have been as strong as Batman Begins, so that might put a crack in that argument.

Either way, I'd say they better get their script and concept finalized within the next 6-8 months if they are really serious about summer 2010.

That might favor Singer again though because he's probably a lot further along conceptually than bringing in a new director and possibly a new screenwriter would be.

I really do want Singer to helm the sequel, but I could live with a new director IF they keep the same characters/actors from SR. There's more than enough meat in SR to make a great sequel...a complete reboot isn't necessary.

Even if Singer gets to continue his interpretation I highly doubt the kid will be that big of a part in it. I loved Superman Returns, problems and all, but I honestly didn't think the kid was that big of a deal. I think Singer got out of that the plot development that he wanted, did a somewhat good job re-establishing the character and mythos, and therefor wants to move on into territory feature films have yet to explore with Superman, such as Metallo or Brainiac.

I loved Superman Returns (well, everything except the Lex Luthor stuff) but it did feel like the final film in a trilogy. There's plenty of places they could go with a sequel (especially if they kept the kid purely in Clark Kent's storyline and out of Superman's storyline), but the best thing commercially would be to just tell a quintessential Superman story. It's never really been done before. The baseball sequence in Superman Returns hinted at it. The second half of Superman: The Movie probably came the closest. But the three best movies have all tried to be the best Superman story ever, and the two other movies were a Richard Pryor slapstick comedy and a overly earnest social commentary. I'd love to see a classic, pulpy Superman action adventure with the "realism" kept for a Clark Kent parallel story at the Daily Planet.

For me an easy out for Singer is to set the next film a few years later and have the kid as a teenager.

If we can't escape the enevitable of having Supes with a son at least we can be spared another film with another little sullen moppet.

Reboot, or simply ignore the Kid.

Why? Because every single Hollywood superhero movie that adds these "shocking" storylines is hated by the film's biggest and most loyal supporters.

There are no shortages of examples. Everyone seems to hate / despise these instances below, none of which ever happened in the comics:
