Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread - Page 11

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Bryan Singer I can do without (as long as they don't replace him McG or Tim Burton ) but Routh HAS to come back. We already bought him as Superman and IMO, it'd be a mistake to try to start all over again with someone else.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

WB still has Routh under contract (for two more flicks) and I'm pretty sure that he'll be coming back for the next movie. Whoever WB casts as Supes for the JL flick will (apparently) only be playing the part in that series of films. The same will be the case of the actor who is cast as Batman. WB is going to hold onto Bale for the "main" series of films as long as they can.

I do think WB will change directors though. Singer will be going to another project after finishing "Valkyrie" and I think WB wants 'The Man of Steel' to start shooting either the end of this year or early in '09 (to make a 2010 release date).

We should know something definitive soon, probably when WB (finally) announces who they cast in the JL feature.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Just as long as they directly continue the current storyline.
I for one can't wait to see the further adventures of Jason, the bastard son of Krypton.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Superman Returns was a nice ending to the Donner trilogy (1,2 & SR). Now, lets do a reboot with no kid, Lex as corporate raider and Superman in a suit that is red, yellow & blue.

Huh? Wasn't Superman in a red, yellow, and blue suit in SR?

It wasn't really red Matthew, it was more like maroon or something.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Oh. Okay. It looked red to me.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

The main thing the next Superman movie needs a new villain. I thought that Kevin Spacey did a fine job as Lex Luthor but it's time for a villain that could actually defeat Superman, Darkseid maybe?

Bryan Singer confirms Superman Returns Sequel

Empire: Movie News - Singer Talks Superman Returns Sequel

Quote:
Earlier today, IESB reported that there was a strong rumour that Bryan Singer was working on a sequel to Superman Returns and that Transformers' Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman would be writing the script. Well, we've spoken to Singer and, though we have no news on whether the Orci/Kurtzman story is true, he's confirmed that work's under way on the film that some said would never happen because the first was perceived as a flop.

"That movie made $400 million!" Singer says incredulously. "I don’t know what constitutes under-performing these days...Look, I can understand, I suppose, what some people mean. Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that. Especially bringing him back. It really goes back to the fact that you can only please some of the people some of the time. But, yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel...with the intention of directing it."

Singer knows that there was some negative reaction to the fact that the first film focused more on story at the expense of action and is looking to redress that next time.

“The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,” he says. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels...Clearly there’ll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon? Well, I’m going to wake them up!” He may be joking about the unrelenting terror.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Glad to hear that this movie is back on track, after the vague reports we had about it being delayed/not made/etc. I think Singer's first film is a great addition to the series, and in many ways, the best since the 1978 original.

The calculation of the film's financial success (or lack thereof) isn't fair, either. The studio put all the expenses for the many failed attempts over 15 years to get this made on Singer's film, so its cost was way inflated over what the true costs were. The studio should eat the costs for considerations of films involving McG, Nicholas Cage, etc.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Let's hope that part of that high body count includes the kid. Of all the mistakes made by Singer's movie, that was the biggest, IMNSHO.

I also liked Transformers. It remembered that blockbusters, first and foremost, should be fun.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

I had a great time watching TRANSFORMERS.
Hopefully The Man of Steel will be a slight bit more of a reboot with reworkings on the current Supes mythos. I've always wanted to see fight scenes of Superman with his most baddest of baddies. I mean come on, I hope they don't overuse Lex Luthor like the 1978-1987 Christopher Reeves series did. Superman III was originally supposed to have Brainiac and Mr. Mxyzptlk. Mebbe Metallo could be exploited for the new film? I just wanna see Superman kicking ass AND using his powers while doing so.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

If you ask me, the best interpretation of Brainiac was in the Bruce Timm-Paul Dini animated series. That was an adversary worthy of Superman. If you aren't familiar with it, check out the DVD of The Last Son of Krypton.

Trust me, if clueless is back to direct the sequel you will definitely see more of Lex Loser.

Like you, I want to see Superman take on villains like the Cyborg, or the ultimate in evil "Darkseid". Maybe even something different, like an alien invasion with technology so advanced that it makes Superman not only have to use his super strength, but his super-intelligence to save the day.

That'd be completely kick ass to see Supes fighting a highly advanced alien invasion. Have them come from Warworld or Darkseid's planet? I forget the name of it...

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

The name of Darkseid's planet is Apokolips. And yes, Superman has to stop bullshitting with Lex or General Zod and start dealing with other super-powered villains so he can go all out with his super powers. No more beating around the bush.

Well, that's interesting. I was hoping Supes would be less of a homewrecker this time around.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

I hope that the makers of the next one understand that the film needs to be bright, colorful, cheerful and energetic. Superman needs to smile and be likeable. Giving him some dialogue wouldn't hurt either.

Also, dialogue needs to be witty and the characters need to speak it quickly and forcefully, like in a 40's screwball comedy. Remember the scenes at the daily planet in the first two films? Those were great, we need more of that.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Any chance they can get rid of the silly costume? If I find out tomorrow I can fly, my first impulse is not to put on blue spandex.

Second, it's always seemed that the stories are a lot of the same. He rescues people from disasters, then meets villian, villian uses kryptonite, he finds a way around it, then beats villian. Seems to me, even if lex luger was holding krypotonite in his hands, he could fly about a 100 yards away, throw a large rock at him, squash him, end of movie. Not trolling, just can never seem to get involved in this character. Nothing could stop this guy if he were smart.

And does he always have to be a goof when clark kent, but when he becomes superman he's blue steel and not longer the "nerd"? Seems like they just need to revamp this entire thing.

I thought Singer did a good job of retaining elements of the original Donner films while still taking the character in some new directions. I enjoyed the darker, more somber mood, especially since it fit the plot so well. But Singer left himself enough room to take it just about anywhere in the sequel(s).

Agreed. I thought the first film was absolutely terrible. They're going to have to come up with something great to get me back into the theater to see a sequel.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

This is weird. Mark Millar talking about his version of Superman. With the huge opening of Wanted, could Warner Bros. change their minds on Singer? Or are they way too far in pre-production?

"Since I was a kid I've always wanted to reinvent Superman for the 21st century," Millar said. "I've been planning this my entire life. I've got my director and producer set up, and it'll be 2011. This is how far ahead you have to think.

"The Superman brand is toxic after that last movie lost [money], but in 2011 we're hoping to restart it. Sadly I can't say who the director is, but we may make it official by Christmas."
