Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread - Page 9

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

And not to mention that in that rumor they say he is up for a role in the upcoming sequel, not the superman role. Routh is still playing. So, criticizing him just because he is up for a secondary role which we have no idea what it might be, makes no sense.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Not having seen Kingdom of Heaven I only have the Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean films to go on, but given that I think Bloom is a fine actor, I have no problem with him being in the sequel, either.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Bloom was the worse actor in LOTR. While in fairness at lot of his lines fare much better on a page than on the lips of any living being ("the stars are veiled... something stirs in the east..."), I felt the actor's "I am saying something very profound" delivery didn't help either.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

That's the thing. Bloom is interchangeable in any film role. He's the same in Lord of the Rings as he is in Pirates of the Caribbean as he is in Kingdom of Heaven. Same pitch... same delivery... same tone... every line...every movie.

That said... playing a villain in the new Superman movie could give him coverage as he's never played a villain before. Let's just hope he tries something different.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

could it be that they want bloom for the new tom cruise movie and not superman?

Someone created this on another forum. Its one of the best manips I have seen. Just reaffirms to me that Welling would have made a better Supes.

Never mind that Welling has the voice of a 12 year old.

Guess this will never end, huh?

How someone looks in the suit is a lot different from how someone acts in the suit.

Some folks have big screen presence. Some are more "suited" to television.

Singer & WB made the right choices for each.

^^^ I agree.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Peter, I actually had no problem with any of Singers choices for actors, even Routh. I just had a big problem with the story(ie-following to close to Donners, the kid and Lex being a criminal). But, we discussed that before.

I only brought this up. Since its the first manip I have seen that actually looks like its a real pic.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Someone on posted this trailer on youtube. Its a fan-made Superman one with Welling. But, whats neat was this guys ability to edit not just footage but, change and add things to actors. Not bad for a non-profession.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

I am so untalented.

How unbelievably painstaking it must have been to put Welling's head onto Chris' body on MOVING video footage!? And people on the net do that kind of thing for fun!

I am so untalented.

His voice seems pretty deep for a 12 year old.

Routh had little presence.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Again I ask (no one seems willing to answer me on this), how does one know that Welling would have no presence as Supes when he's never played him before? Again he's being judged soley on his performance on Smallville (not counting The Fog remake which was just a mess all around and I don't place any blame on Welling in that, the guy had bad lines from a bad script) when he's specifically called to act the way he acts as Clark.

Your simply not willing to give Welling any credit for being a versatile actor and your relegating him to television. I'm telling you, if Welling were to hit the gym and invest himself 100% into the role, he could be the greatest Supes since Chris Reeve.

But we'll never know will we so this could go on forever, it's all opinion and speculation on our parts, some think Welling couldn't do a good job and some do, I think he could do it.

BTW, i've seen Superman Returns about 6 times now and while I love the film no one will ever convince me that Routh was more than just adequate as Supes, he had the right face but he looked too thin and angular at times, my dad commented as we were watching it that he thought that Routh looked too much like an android in certain shots, referring to his appearance, not his acting.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

Watching the vid Todd posted, I dont think Welling has the presence for Superman. I was sold on Routh when I saw him at the awards show with T Hatcher.

It's unwise to use that home-made vid as a definitive referrance of how Welling would do as Supes, that vid is a mish mash of Welling from different seasons where his face was skinnier and his hair was fuller, that photoshopped Smallville poster is more represenative of how he'd look as Supes today I think, with a stronger face and the proper hairstyle.

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

If you want to see Welling with presence. Watch the episode this season where Lex comes to give Clark an invitation to his & Lana's wedding. He tries to intimidate Clark. Clark steps up and for one of the first times see him stare and speak him down.

From an earlier question. The Zod footage is Karl Urban from "Chronicles of Riddick".

Re: Superman Returns Sequel discussion thread

The problem with casting for Superman is that the actor needs to fit three roles, the normal Clark, the nerdy Clark and Superman. I can't see Welling as bumbling, nerdy, bespectacled Clark Kent, the reporter. He's way too beefcake, his face too full and his appearance too youthful.

Nick from CSI would make an interesting Superman. In one of the earlier seasons, when he had his hair long, he looked slightly Clark-ish, minus the specs.

It's his physicality. He's got the body for Superman, but not the face. His features -- eyes, mouth, etc. -- are just too large to make a sufficiently manly Superman.
