I have to admit the animated series did a real good job at promoting Lex as a Criminal mastermind so effective that those with super powers including Superman have trouble containing and dealing with him. For the sequel I would have to go with Brainiac, a lot can be done with that character, he can threaten the world with his ability to control computers can go a long way. Darkseid well, that might require two or three movies llike X-Men.

Even though he isn't wearing the costume on the show doesn't negate the fact that it takes some of the magic out of seeing Superman return to the big screen.

I watched Superman Returns again, this time on DVD. The thing that stuck out at me was that the scenes that drag are the ones that only involve Lex. Lois is a complicated character, sometimes rather unlikeable, but she's always interesting because she ties in directly with our hero. To some extent this movie made the mistake of the original Batman movie: it focused more on the villain than the hero. Batman Begins got it right: Virtually everything was seen through Bruce/Batman's perspective. I don't think any of the scenes that didn't lasted more than a minute or two. Routh knows how to carry the screen. Let him do it.

Here's sort of what I'd like to see out of a sequel's opening:

Clark Kent's chasing down a story on the streets of metropolis. We are introduced to a storyline for CLARK that will carry through the movie. As he's going down the street, he sees a robbery in progress or some other more human level criminal act. We see him duck into an alleyway, rip open his shirt to reveal the "S" and soar up into the sky. The camera keeps launching into the sky until we ultimately reach outer space. "WARNER BROS. PICTURES PRESENTS..." explodes out into the screen in the style of S:TM and SR. As the credits finish, Brainaic's space vessel slides into the starscape and the camera follows its descent towards earth.

I disliked the opening with Lex getting the rich lady to sign over everything to him on her deathbed. That was not the way to start this sort of film. Simply start with Supes crashing into Martha's backyard, and go from there, cut to the deathbed scene, if you must, but it didn't even need to be shown, just alluded to with a few lines of dialogue between Lex and Kitty. But I digress...

As far as the sequel opening, I don't think we need the Clark angle first, just do the credits, and then let Braniac's starship fly into view in the starscape, and then offscreen, slip in a placard "a few years ago, Superman visited the remains of Krypton, and left thinking he was the sole survivor of his deceased planet. He was not." Then cut to the Return to Krypton footage and end with a pullback of Braniac watching Supes' starship flying back towards Earth, and him following Supes.

Sounds to me Brandon isn't too sure of much in that article. Does pre-production include writing a script? I get the feeling from that article that Mr. Routh has not seen one yet.

I just watched the film for the second time since seeing it in theaters. To me, it was much, much better the second time around. I hope it builds an audience from home viewings.

I think it's just because Routh is still honest and far less media savvy than most other actors. Most actors will bullshit a lot of spin, but Routh seems to care as much about answering the question honestly as he does making the film look good. Considering that all of Singer's films evolve throughout the production, it's no big surprise that he doesn't have shooting script in hand. For some projects it'd be a bad omen, but not necessarily for this one.

Variety reports that United Artists has green-lit Bryan Singer's next movie, in which he will team up once again with "The Usual Suspects" screenwriter Chris McQuarrie.
The report also claims that the World War II film will "delay Warner Bros.' hope of mounting a sequel to Superman Returns in the near future." The Superman Homepage has found out that this claim is false, with Warner Bros. and Bryan Singer reportedly on track to start filming the sequel to "Superman Returns" around March of 2008 as previously planned.

I read about the plans for a Justice League movie a few days ago and thought it'd could be the best thing for us comic fans, ever. But they lost me when they said Batman wouldn't be part of it.

Actually, I thought of a way to wipe out what we saw in Superman Returns without killing a kid. And it would tie perfectly into the new villain....

"We see a replay of the last few minutes of SR. Then the camera blurs and we see Superman lying unconscience on a table. As the camera pulls back we see a robotic creature manipulating some computers...We soon learn this is Brainiac. And that previously Superman went into space to investigate a ship orbiting Earth. When he investigates he gets zapped into unconsciousness. While the events of SR could be a dream or a forced memory from Brainiac. Somehow Supes escapes and returns to Earth. It's only been a day or so since he left. Lois is still pining for him (& not pregnant) and another thing is that Lex is not a common criminal. But, a corporate CEO (criminal). Supes thinks he destroyed Brainiac. But, as we know of Brainiac even the smallest piece can regenerate itself. So he comes to Earth and the rest is up to the movie writers...."

I would Love a JLA movie! If done well it could be great. I don't see why they couldn't do another Batman movie and then feature him in the Justice League movie.

I want to see another Bryan Singer-directed Superman film. I don't know that a Justice League live-action film can work in the same engaging way a film centered on one character can. For the record, I do not think Batman should be part of such a film. He doesn't work well in groups. Here's hoping Singer's sequel gets made.

I really hope Batman NOR Superman are involved in a Justice League movie. It completely cheapens both of their characters. And both series running co-currently using both characters would only diminish the appeal of their stand alone franchises.

this is apparently a big reason the studios have, and why we dont get movies with batman showing up in a superman movie or superman in a bats movie, even as a cameo.

this is why batman or any real dc super hero will never appear in smalville.

it is so limiting.

cheapens their character, what does that even mean.
these arent real people.
cheapens their character, these are properties not characters
how would it diminish their appeal?

appearing in more then one show or movie would create awareness for people who arent familiar with the other character.
they are already everywere, whats the difference if they are on multple shows or movies.

thats just ridiculous.

i almost dont even know what to say.
really what are you/studios protecting by doing this.

Would Routh have to be Superman & Bale be Batman in a JL movie for the public to buy it?

I think they could cast different people playing those roles in a Supergroup movie. What does everybody think?

While I do think that a JLA movie is a great idea, now just isn't the time for it, with Superman and Batman being two hot franchises again the public has, I think, gotten used to Bale and Routh as those characters and to recast them for a JLA now would seem too jarring to me this early.

IMO, it would also take something away from Bale's and Routh's performances and the uniquness they worked hard to bring to their respective roles, it would seem as if any Tom, Dick and Harry could play them interchangably without any regard to the set personalities that have been established.

Like I said, great idea...but not now, i'd rather see another Superman sequel from Singer at this point in time.

To address the question, lets look at Batman Begins. The makers of this film took much care to ensure that this was a "real world" Batman. It's because of this that the movie and the character of Batman work the way they do. To take this gritty realism and merge it with the clearly fantasy world inhabitied by Superman Returns would ruin the reality the filmmakers built.

To put it simply, in the world of Batman Begins there's no such thing as Super Powers. You can't see how introducing Superman would taint that?

If this Justice League movie gets made, I doubt the group in it would be referred to as "JLA" after the de-emphasizing of American patriotism we saw with "Superman Returns", in which Perry White wasn't allowed to even get out the words "...the American way" in reciting the famous "Truth, Justice..." It's like "Alien Vs. Predator". It came to that because both franchises died out. Now what was once a great franchise is seen somewhat as a joke. Batman and Superman deserve 2 hours for their OWN stories.

If Batman and Superman are in a "Justice League" movie AND their own separate movies at the same time, it's overexposure. TV and comics are one thing. But movies? Seeing a Batman movie should be something of an event. Something special. But if you can get him in a group movie as well, it diminishes that appeal. It ruins that something special. My opinion of course.

true but if a vs. p was made by John McTiernan and ridley scott then it wouldnt have shtank.

alien series became a joke well before a vs. p.
did you see resurrection?
predator 2 wasnt anything more then a slasher movie in predator clothing.

in the wrong hands any story could be screwed up.
or in right hands, good

some of the JLA comic stories are truly briliant.
would be fabulous to see on the big screen.
