Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

You may not miss Tim Sylvia but the UFC Heavyweight division will miss him badly. I don't know all the reasons he's leaving but Sylvia has been in the UFC a long time. He's expected to sign with M-1 Global which boggles my mind because I still don't think that promotion is going to run a show and even if they do run a show I don't see them making it more than a year.

Final Monthly Power Rankings...The Middleweight Division The champ is the same but we have a new number 1.

Possible opponent for Kimbo Slice...Ron Waterman

For those that are Wrestling fans, Ron Waterman resembles Scott Steiner a bit.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Speaking of Kimbo...I was watching the season finale of Joe vs. Pro on Spike and Bob Sapp (I think that's his name) was one of the pros. Sapp used to be a football player who decided to venture into mma. I didn't know about him until this show and the guy is just a monster. 6'5", 345lbs!

Where does he fight? I'd really like to see him in action. Him against Kimbo would be sweet.

Well, Sapp last fought for the Strikeforce promotion in February on HDNet fights, Sapp lost in less than a minute. He made his name in Japan and he has fought some tough guys, I'm sure he fought Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira once. He mainly did K-1.

You can also see Bob Sapp in Adam Sandler's remake of the Longest Yard, which is where I well, thought I had seen him for the first time but that wasn't actually true.

Bob Sapp before getting in to MMA was under a WCW developmental contract in 2001. He has also negotiated to come in to both WWE and TNA at times. I'm pretty sure I saw him on WCW Thunder once, ah Thunder, good times...or not.

If you're interested in what I think of/thought of tonight's Strikeforce/EliteXC show you'll find my live thoughts/commentary here

Oh, and if you don't have Showtime, this is available on PPV as well but if it were me I'd just subscribe to Showtime for a day or 2, you'll pay less money.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Can you believe it!

My thoughts on the Frank Shamrock vs Cung Le fight.
(set in spoiler tags for late watchers)

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

For a significant portion of the first two rounds, I felt like Frank Shamrock was toying with Cung Le to build up the fight and make the fans feel like they were getting their money's worth. That feeling had a lot to do with Cung's relative inexperience in MMA, and a few times when I felt Frank got close enough to take Cung to the ground (where I expected Frank to excel), but didn't do so.

As the fight went on, I had to entertain the notion that maybe Cung just has decent takedown defense. I still think Frank should have been able to take him down, but maybe not.

Somewhere in the later third round, Frank started unloading on Cung Le and my sense of apprehension rose. Those punches had bad intentions. If some of those punches had landed cleanly, Cung (or anyone else) would have been in trouble. I lost track of whether it was a 3-round or 5-round fight (yeah, I know... but I did), which robbed me of some of the impact of what happened to open the 4th round. Unable to answer the bell? I didn't see that coming. If I'd have been aware there was a 4th round coming, I would have guessed that Frank would continue unloading those power punches and continue to get Cung in trouble.

As it is, Cung Le defeats Frank Shamrock when Frank is unable to answer the 4th round bell.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that I'm one of those folks who doesn't particularly like Frank Shamrock (the person -- or at least the showman, not the fighter). But I saw some things in that fight. I saw a man with the heart of a champion, and I saw a very skilled guy. But in the end, the guy I wanted to win is the guy who won. Now the MMA world will have to give Cung Le at least a little more respect.

The show already aired so as per forum rules, I don't think we need to use spoilers anymore.

Mikah, what do you mean by "he could not answer the 4th round bell".

He means that in the time between the end of round 3 and the beginning of round 4 Shamrock told the doctor of his injury and that he couldn't continue so the Dr. stopped the fight at that point. So because round 3 had ended, and round 4 was set to begin, it was said that he couldn't answer the bell for the forth round.

The term answer the bell essentially means to come out for the next round, if you throw in the towel between rounds you are said to be unable to answer the bell for the next round. It is a common term especially in Boxing.

If you're a fan of Chuck Liddell and looking for something to read here's a link to a recent chat transcript from the L.A. Times.

I'm not sure if registration is required to view the page or not, it makes no difference to me as I am a registered user.

If you saw the last IFL show on HDNet where Ryan McGivern, Ryan Schultz and Roy Nelson were all victorious in championship matches the trio is back to defend their belts on May 16 in Uncasville Connecticut

The Schultz Vs. Deividas Taurosevicius fight could be a fun one.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Well, so much for my belief that Frank Mir should get the next shot at Nogueira's belt. Mir will be fighting at UFC 86 but it isn't going to be against Nogueira which as I note, begs the question of who is next for Nog?

Man the UFC Heavyweight division is hurting real bad.

As I write this, preliminaries are underway.

TUF 7 Ep. 1 Thoughts/results

The show was structured exactly the way I thought it would be with 8 fights and most of them shown in highlight form.

Fight Night was really good and threw some of my rankings all out of wack. It is a good thing I've got until the end of the month to reorganize them.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I have all but 100% decided to order/cover/review the Yamma show on the 11th. Yes, I have many many things I could better spend $34.95 on or whatever, but I just get the sense that this could be one of those all-time disasters that really could stand to be archived for historical purposes.

Why do I think this? Well, this is a good sign of bad things to come this has huge but histerical failure written on it.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Fight Night was really good.

The Houston Alexander knockout was sick and yet hilarious to watch.

Nate Diaz has a very bright future ahead of him. I was surprised to see his brother Nick there but it's good to show support.

That kid Anthony Johnson looked good. Didn't give Tommy Speer a chance.

Kenny Florian, good as always. Him fighting Huerta would be sweet!

Was it just me or were there a lot of fights that were not aired? Manny Gamburyan, Clay Guida, George Sotiropoulos? I wanted to see their fights.

TUF 7 was interesting. I like how they PIP'd Dana and the coaches and you could hear their comments. I don't know if it's going to be like that on every fight but so far, I like it.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

They aired 7 of 12 fights on FN 13.

Both of Anthony Johnson's wins in the UFC have been quick, his first victory was at FN 10 in June of 07 and he won in 13 seconds.

IFL Live Coverage

and I'm happy it is at 7:30 central because I've had a long day and am dog tired but I'm here.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Tim Sylvia and Fedor are fighting July 19th most likely in Dallas. I dont have the link but its reported at various MMA sites.

I think Fedor will win but I wouldnt be shocked if Timmy has the underdog mentality and pulls off the upset...just to screw Randy, now that would be hilarious!

Don't count your Fedor fights until they've ... ben fought, I guess. Yes, the fight is rumored and yes, it could happen, but when it comes to Fedor I won't believe it until it is signed and due to the M-1 Global silliness I might not believe it then.
Fedor's manager says no deal is in place, so we'll just wait and see.

In other words, sorry for being so quiet lately but I've had to do a lot more stuff lately due to my site co-owner's on-going relocation from his apartment in to a new house.

I decided to cover Yamma tomorrow, yeah this could be an all-time trainwreck of a show but if it is at least I'll have documented thoughts on it.

TUF last night was ok, I'm still not convinced we have the 16 best guys in the house but we do have 16 guys. I'd sure like to know how they came up with those matchups in the first place.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

That was a sick knockout on TUF wasn't it? I've never heard anyone making a noise like that after being TKO'd and I believe "Rampage" made the same comment.

The guy kept saying "was that a real fight or training?",

Poor guy...he was f...d up! And his jaw might've been broken too.
