Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

FYI, I was one of those MMA=UFC people simply because PRIDE and K-1 were so inaccessible to the average American. As for WEC, IFL, and the various incarnations of EliteXC (ShoXC, etc.), those have been somewhat confusing to me and difficult to get my arms around. UFC had it simple with UFC1 through UFC82, with the occasional Fight Night and Ultimate Fighter thrown in. I needed Wikipedia just to determine which PRIDE events came before or after other PRIDE events. The average viewer doesn't want following MMA to be a way of living... We just want to invest a minimum amount of energy getting to know the fighters and enjoying the fights. The more a promotion can do to make it simple for us, the better the chances they'll snag and keep us.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

When I say that MMA = UFC I mean it in the way that people would refer to any soda as a coke.

The fact that you could sit and watch a fight in the EliteXC and say that this is an MMA fight instead of a UFC fight means to me, that you don't quite fit in the group I was referring to.

To be more specific to a certain segment of the population MMA isn't the sport, UFC is the sport.

UFC Middleweight Division Power Rankings

A little bit of a change here and with a title fight this weekend, there will be more next month.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Mikah, I agree with to a degree but with the right marketing(and education), I think MMA could approach being mentioned in the same conversation as the other big sports in the US(NFL, MLB,NBA,PGA, NASCAR,NHL and MMA close behind).

My personal experience...my best friend would invite me over to watch events, I could care less what was going on. I was really just over to hang out with friends. I had no emotional investment in the fighters and had no idea what was happening. Then we started watch TUF(Shamrock vs Tito-so you can probably guess I why I like Tito so much!). Once I started to get to know the fighters, my love and appreciation has grown for the sport.

I think if they can move to a major network and they allow the general populace to learn about the fighters and the sport, I think it will get even bigger. So we will see what happens...

Casey, any insight on what Dana White's major announcement is going to be tomorrow??

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

No idea, but it will have to be big in order to leadfrog the EliteXC deal.

Maybe they've got a network deal of their own?

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I hope the big announcement wasn't just that Bud Light is now a sponsor of the UFC. Sure, that's a big name and I'm sure some good money, but come on.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Well, James mentioned mentioned the news and that's my take on it that I just linked.

This would've been a huge announcement before yesterday's story about EliteXC and it just has to burn Dana up that a bit of Thunder was stolen.

However, this is still a pretty big deal because Anheuser-Busch is a big name and big names tend to follow other big names when it comes to sponsorships, I'm thinking a softdrink company will eventually appear in the future.

This division holds steady this month, and will until May when seemingly everyone starts fighting again.

The CBS deal was the lead item on today's PTI. I happened to catch the segment and here is my recap w/my own commentary

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I really love PTI but Korneiser is a complete idiot when it comes to MMA. Brutal? yeah i guess but a lot less than boxing. look at Ali and all other boxers who have sustained serious head injuries/complications in life

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I don't know how many people will be interested in this but I'll have live coverage of both the IFL's season opener and Kim Couture's MMA debut tonight on HDNet.

Yes, I pulled some money together and bought an HD set and subscribed to HDNet so I could cover these things.

Anyway, live IFL coverage is here starting at 11:00 PM ET. After that, I'll cover Kim Couture's MMA debut at Xtreme Couture in Vegas.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

welcome to HDNet Casey, you will love it. Be sure to check out Inside MMA, very solid show with lots of good guest panelists. Plus, Bas Rutten is awesome.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Inside MMA is great. You'll love the channel. I love having more access to MMA fighting with it. The fact they also show a mix of extreme sports makes it my fav channel to have on in the background during those times.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I almost registered just to say don't beat yourself up.

Do you have the events recorded?

BTW, the Kim Couture fight wasn't worth the time to watch it. Randy being a great fighter doesn't make his wife one, and she wasn't. She was vastly overmatched in terms of skill and toughness. I don't know if she just decided at age 32 to be a fighter, but it certainly looks that way. The ref kept stopping the fight to "adjust headgear" but it also looked like he didn't want to see Kim get beaten too badly in an exhibition. On the other hand, I'm not sure I blame her for this. It's an amateur exhibition and she's not the one going out trying to publicize it. That's everyone else in the mma game (especially press). Perhaps she's just a person interested in MMA and wants to start out as an amateur and learn the game so she can one day be a serious fighter. In fact, she pretty much said as much during her interview.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Mikah, you don't need to register to leave a comment on that site but thanks for the kind words. No, I didn't record them because I foolishly reasoned that since I'd be awake, I wouldn't need to...needless to say that will no longer be the case. Which is ironic since I just got my DVR on Tuesday, it will change my life.

In fairness to Kim, as you rightly noted, this was just supposed to be what they call a "smoker" which is mainly designed to help people gage where they are in their training in a small setting. The fact of who she is and who she's married to got this thing televised which I'm sure didn't help. She'll actually have her first fight w/o headgear in early April and if I was her I'd plead for it not to be on HDNet or any other channel. I mean how many amature fighters, especially female amature fighters have their fights on TV?

In other news Bob Sapp got a lot of money for 55 seconds of work
$1,818.18 per second of work is not a bad price.

Although in fairness to Bob Sapp he did help Strikeforce set the record for best gate MMA/Boxing in the state of Washington so it isn't like Strikeforce got hosed on the deal.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

You guys know or should know that I thought up to now that Street Certified was the best MMA show of 2008 (not that there has been a lot of competition).

Anyway, now that [url=http://combat-hooligans.com/2008/03/01/nick-diaz-added-to-strikeforce-le-vs-shamrock/">Nick Diaz will be fighting March 29[/url]

I think that the Strikeforce/EliteXC show on that night could surpass it and possibly by a wide margin.

The only way I can think to describe what I expect the crowd to be like for Le Vs. Shamrock is if you had Kimbo Slice fighting in Miami against...Kimbo Slice.

If you have Showtime you should be counting the days. I hope my saying this doesn't curse this show, but I think this one will be in the running for show of the year if not the frontrunner.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I read earlier today that UFC 87 would be in Mpls! I live in Maple Grove(just outside of Mpls) so this will for sure be my first UFC event! Hopefully it will be at the Xcel Center and not the Target Center. My friends dad has Wild season tickets and can get tickets to anything there before the general public. I know he can for concerts so hopefully it will work for the UFC.

If not, when I ordered the UFC 3 PPV pack last year, I got a free Fight Club membership so I can buy them before the public. I can not wait! That could be around the time GSP fights next?? Hopefully Lesnar/Coleman wont be the headliner

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

The UFC is offering Randy Couture a fight with Nogueira.

Josh, I've heard that UFC 87 might be the date of the Rampage-Forrest fight though why they'd wait more than a month after the end of TUF is something I can't quite figure, so that is something to keep an eye on.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I was thinking that too about the Rampage/Forrest fight too. If the show ends in June or July, the next likely date for them to fight would be in July. Obviously that wont be on Spike as it will draw a huge PPV. August seems a little drawn out but I would take it if it meant I get to see it in person.

I would also bet Roger Huerta would be on that card as well since he trains in MN and said he wants to take time off so an August return seems likely.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

For the life of me, I can not understand why Couture just didnt take his medicine from the get-go and fight one last time with the UFC. If he had just never said anything and taken one more fight, probably with Big Nog, his contract would have been over and fulfilled. He then could have walked away to fight Fedor wherever he wanted to. Plus, he still would have take his iconic rep with him. Now, I think a lot of MMA fans have turned on him a bit and he isnt the second coming as he would have been.

Now because he wanted to make a stink, he has a huge legal battle in front of him...doesnt make much sense...the only way it would is if he truly wanted to retire from MMA.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Ya know, it kind of does make sense for Rampage/Griffin to fight that night. I believe the UFC wants a title bout on every card. Or if not, a huge draw like Liddell to go along with other great fights. The only possible exception maybe free Spike shows. So we have the WW title next month, LW in May, none in June, MW? in July, then probably LHW in August.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Couture, to me, is not all that different from a guy in the NFL who sits out training camp hoping for more money. They're both sitting out because they want something, be it money or in Couture's case a fight with Fedor.

It isn't like the UFC is keeping Randy from working, they're offering him work. Everybody knows he's not really retired and he'll fight Fedor the first chance he gets in the UFC or otherwise.

If a pro athlete in say the NFL retires with 2 years left on his contract and then decided to come out of retirement a season or 2 later, unless he got a release from the team for which he last played, he still owes that team 2 years of service. So Randy's sitting out until July thinking that when July hits his contract is up despite the fact it still contains to fights doesn't seem like something that would fly in my view.

Oh and Josh, another name possible for a Minnesota show is Sean Sherk.
