Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I caught the UFC 69 PPV. I believe no spoiler tags are needed since it already aired 2 days ago.

I cannot believe how the main event went down. GSP looked as focused and menacing as his last fight with Matt Hughes. I would've never believed in a million years that Matt Serra would bring it to him the way he did.

The 155lb match was definately the best of the night because of the beating both guys dashed out. Simply amazing.

"The spider" looked impressive. He's got a bright future ahead.

Sanchez on the other hand...jesus...what a disappointment. He let Koscheck get in his head so bad. I mean, if you're going to lose, throw a frigging punch at least! Go down fighting, especially if it's going to be your first defeat on a professional level. This was definately the fight I was looking forward to the most and it ended up being the most boring.

In any case, I'm happy for Matt Serra. He seems like a cool dude and deserves his moment of fame. Let's see how long he can hold on to that title.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

For those of you interested in getting more acquainted with Pride and its fighters on April 28, there will be a best of Pride PPV that looks at the promotions first decade in existance, and from the preview I got to see as part of the 5 hours of the Nobuyuki Sakakibara is the best man ever show early Sunday morning, the PPV will be really awesome.

I can't confirm this, but am led to believe that all replays of this most recent Pride show will be edited down from the 5 hours that it was scheduled to run.

The Pride show was actually pretty good in the ring, and worth owning for historical reasons, but parts of it did fall flat.

1. They kept hyping Kazuyuki Fujida Vs. Jeff Monson as this big start to the Pride/UFC war when actually Monson had gotten out of his UFC contract and signed with Pride. Its not like he was UFC's hand-picked rep or anything.
2. The Japanese audience may like the intermission but I don't.

However, the Don Frye fight was brutal in a brutal sort of way and there was some good action.

Speaking of Don Frye, I just finished watching UFC 8 on DVD which is the tournament that Frye won. Interesting to see UFC back then and now.

MMA News and Notes: Liddell in SI, Train with Cro Cop, Nick Diaz suspended-fight ruled a no contest, UFC comings and goings, NSAC hands down suspensions, UFC 69 coverage and more

I suppose the fact that Nick Diaz' fight with Takanori Gomi at Pride 33 was ruled a no contest is the biggest thing.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Did you guys watch the Ultimate Fighter 5 last week? Man, is there a lot of testoreone in that house this season or what?

Looks like it's going to be an entertaining season. BJ Penn and what's his name (the other coach) don't like each other at all.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

I saw it, but you can never tell how much two guys really don't like each other when you're talking to them before a fight. These two coaches will be going at each other at the end of the season, and it's reasonable that they're already in mind games mode that not only hypes the fight, but themselves. There are some professionals that say dislike is a distraction. There are some professionals that say it's a lot easier to throw a devastating punch at someone you dislike.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Jens Pulver and B.J. Penn clearly do not like each other. Watching Fight Night 5 before hand it is clear from the interview. Penn trying to embarrass Pulver when it came to team selections was only part of it. The bad blood likely stems from a prior UFC bout where Penn was owning Pulver for 2 rounds but as happens with Penn gassed out and was owned the rest of the fight.

I have no doubt that the hatred is real, I also know that editing probably makes it come off even worse. All I really know is I can't wait for the fight that will take place at the end of the season.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

What would be the next logical top contender for the welterweight title? I guess it should be Koscheck right? What do you guys think? Serra vs Koscheck next?

Made this post on the blog a couple of days ago. Matt Hughes is getting the next shot. Koscheck was disappointed by this reality but his fights are almost always boring and in the UFC it isn't just about winning or losing it is about being entertaining. Losing an entertaining fight is more often than not better for you than winning a dull one.

There is some intrigue in Hughes-Serra as Hughes came in for a time on TUF 4 and Serra found him to be a bit too cocky. An opinion he is not alone in holding I should note. So bad blood does exist.

The fight could take place around August or so.

Koscheck wants a shot, stop being so boring then.

Yes, I was going to mention the interaction Serra and Hughes already had in the previous season of the Ultimate Fighter. Serra doesn't seem to like Hughes too much.

Good match up. Bring it on.

This gives me a chance to plug one of my favorite radio shows. Between the Ropes

Last night, they interviewed Matt Serra and he talked about the issues with Hughes among other things. An entertaining show for those who love Pro Wrestling and MMA, and you can download the MP3 of last nights show at Betweentheropes.com

CARE Audio Preview: UFC 70

An hour long podcast, where we maybe talk UFC 70 for 3 minutes. However, we do make fun of Andrei Arlovski's sponsorship with Comdomdepot.com and how to work that in to his fights.

Also, we give Melvin Guillard his defense to the NSAC for his failed Cocaine test and talk about the cooking show that needs to be made, Baking with Nick Diaz.

Also more on Dana White than you'd ever want or need to know.

People who enjoy food, but have weak stomachs probably shouldn't listen. But, for anyone that does, I think you'll laugh a lot.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Cro Cop's loss to Gonzaga was devistating but it was also no fluke. We've seen a lot of upsets lately and here is my theory as to why

The other 2 heavyweight fights on this show were terrible. Consider yourself lucky though if you saw this on SpikeTV, we were spared a horrible David Heath Vs. Lyoto Machida fight that was intended for the broadcast but was replaced by Grice-Etim due to sucking so bad. Our friends in the UK had to sit through it, and my friend Euan did not have kind things to say about it in his report on our blog.

Gonzaga is a dangerous opponent for Couture.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Man, I was speechless after that Cro Cop knockout. Saying that was an upset is a total understatement.

Cro Cop got a taste of his own medicine. And that was the most painfull fall I've seen in a while. His leg and foot were all bent and twisted. It almost looked like he had broken it or something. I guess it didn't because he was walking fine after a while.

Randy Couture has his work cut out for him.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

Lost in the excitement of the main event was 2 other significant events.

1. Michael Bisping is a superstar.

2. Matt Serra and Matt Hughes are going to make UFC a lot of money.

As the season 6 coaches for the Ultimate Fighter, that will give them 13 weeks to build up their fight. In other words, UFC will be raking in more cash this year.

Re: UFC Ongoing Thread

When I saw you comment here on upsets, I was reminded again of my general theory regarding sports... "On any given Sunday..." Sure it is more known in NFL circles, but it's how I feel about many competitive sports. Part of the reason you watch is that you're dealing with pros and even though there are favorites, the other person is a pro as well.

Quote:
this just proves that everyone is stupid if they think they've got this sport figured out.

Exactly. It's also why I enjoy rematches. Just because a given fighter wins on a given night does not mean he'll win the next time. As a longtime fan of boxing, I've always found it dead on when someone who expects to win comments and says, "Tonight, he was the better fighter." It doesn't mean, the other guy will always be better, and it also isn't making excuses. It's an acknowledgment of the reality of the situation. When you walk into a ring and a guy throws 5 punches at you, maybe all 5 miss and maybe one connects. May one connects in a way that staggers you. Maybe you recover, maybe you don't. But anything can (and does) happen. It'd be boring otherwise.

Casey, could you elaborate on this? Are Serra and Hughes going to be coaches on the next Ultimate Fighter?

Yes, it was announced on Saturday's show, they even interviewed Serra. Season 6 of the Ultimate Fighter will feature Hughes and Serra as coaches. It will be an all Welterweight season, and probably start airing this August. At the end of the season, they'll have their scheduled Welterweight title fight on Pay Per View.

In other welterweight news:
*Mike Swick who lost to Yushin Okami at UFC 69 in Houston is expected to drop down from Middleweight for his next fight.
*It looks like Georges St. Pierre is headed to a bout with Josh Koscheck possibly at UFC 74.

Casey, did you see the "fight" between Dana White and Tito Ortiz? I didn't get to see it and I know it aired recently (though it happened awhile ago). If you saw it, how'd it go? I haven't seen much from Ortiz lately.

Best part of the interview is when he said how tired he was of fighting all of these nice guys. He then said --- "Hughes is a Dick" l
