I think there is a difference between a film I would consider "great" filmmaking and can love, to a film that is lke comfort food that I would stop and watch anytime.

For me, these are nearly one and the same. My favorite film is the one I consider to be the best film that still appeals strongly to my personal aesthetic tastes.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

The newly restored image that Criterion did for Seven Samurai does not, of course, change the plot but it is like a layer of haze, damage and dust has been removed from the film revealing the great cinematography in a way it has not been seen in a long long time....well...I guess it isn't "like" a layer of haze, damage and dust has been removed...it HAS been removed!

Get it Holadem, you'll thank yourself as soon as you start it up.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

I often wonder how frequently people screen their favorite movie. I think I started a thread asking this question a million years ago. For about 2 years after I first saw Saving Private Ryan and it instantly became my favorite movie, I watched it, parts or whole, on average every other week. I just couldn't have enough. I compulsively watched Magnolia the same way for a long time. I would put it on as background noise while doing stuff around the apt. I've stopped the pratice, I rarely watch my favs nowadays, too many movies out there to discover to keep rethreading the same ole same ole...

It's an interesting topic, as I find myself similar to you at time. I find myself obsessing about a new favorite and drowning myself it over and over and over. As for how often, I watch my favorites, I would say that I have a list of 10-20 films that are repeated every 1-2 years. There are probably another 20-30 that are repeated every 5 years. I just don't have the time for repeat viewing anymore. I own at least 400 DVDs that I've never seen before and have a list in excess of 1000 movies that I want to see. I'm very jealous of some people who have a small clump of films that they re-peat over and over and are completely content.
Here are my most repeated films:
The Apartment
Magnolia
The Big Lebowski
Rear Window
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Vertigo
Blazing Saddles
Young Frankenstein
Double Indemnity
American Beauty
Wonder Boys

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

I only have a few films that get watched at regular times each year:

1. The Godfather films (fall..will start soon)
2. LOTR (December)
3. Polar Express (day after Thanksgiving)

Others are watched when the mood strikes

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

Hehe - as soon as I saw the topic name, I knew there was no way in hell most people would list just ONE.

Ok, for me - Rosemary's Baby - just a perfect, perfect film.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

It's all but impossible to narrow my favorites down to one, but Pulp Fiction would have to be it. It's the movie that turned me into a movie geek. However, my lifelong favorite movie is probably Ghostbusters. It was my favorite as a kid and even now it's still among my favorites.

I'm kind of surprised that I'm the only person who has listed Pulp Fiction...

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

As the thread topic asks for my one favorite film (not to be confused with what I think is the "best" film), my vote goes (and has since it debuted around six years ago) to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON.

I think that the reasons for it being my favorite film are not entirely clear, even to me, but I know that there's no other film that comes anywhere near this one's power over my emotions.

#2, just for the record, is LOST IN TRANSLATION. It makes me miss Japan every time I see it.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

My favorite film of all time is Renoir's Rules Of The Game - the wisdom and compassion of the film breaks my heart every time.

ROTG makes a lot of all time greats list, and with good reason. I first saw it, with little preparation or preconceptions, as a teen in college back around 1971. I had an immediate emotional identification with the film that has remained with me ever after. For this reason, while others may prefer The Grand Illusion, Rules of the Game remains a supreme cinematic achievement and my favorite movie.

There are scores of other films I dearly love & watch frequently from Sunrise to The Passion Of Joan of Arc, from Blade Runner to Blue Velvet, from Tokyo Story to The Philadelphia Story, from the Lady Eve to Some Like It Hot, from Singin' In The Rain to Swing Time, from The Conversation to Goodfellas. But ROTG is my fave if forced to pick just one.

BTW, my favorite guilty pleasure is The Hidden.

Me too. That is why Shawshank Redemption never goes stale.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

For me it's Apocalypse Now. It never ceases to astonish me, and it certainly helps that it's highly watchable.

Up until a few months ago I would've specified that I prefer the original cut, but when I recently watched the Complete Dossier DVD, I think I preferred Redux.

My #2 would be A Clockwork Orange.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

Man, what's with all the Star Wars fans? Am I the only one who thinks Star Wars is hyped up mediocre fare?

Anyway, my all-time most precious favorite is Akira Kurosawa's: Dreams

Not Kurosawas best in terms of an overall film, but his most personal, and as a big fan of Kurosawa, just one that is most personally incredible for me.

Apocalypse Now would be be near the top of my list as well (excepting many Kurosawa films). Apocalypse Now is kind of the ultimate anthropological critique for me, a marvelous film.

Lol... Star Wars...whatever...

Almost Famous literally feeds my soul every time I watch it. It's the most emotionally honsest film about living on the cusp between childhood and adulthood I've ever seen.

The Three Musketeers (1973)

It's been too long since I've seen it, but it's my most-watched film. I simply adore it.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

If we can consider The Lord of the Rings a single movie in three parts, I'll take that one.

If I can really only have a single film, I've always had a soft spot for Driving Miss Daisy.

Sorry to be conventional, but I'll say Casablanca.

I absolutely agree! I loved Almost Famous so much from the first time I saw it. It still remains my all time favorite film.

And Eric, Wonder Boys is a favorite of mine too. It really captured what my college experience was, at least in spirit...

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

For me it's Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, followed very closely by Empire Strikes Back. I actually have a top 100 that I compiled some time ago from a list of all films I have seen in my life (or at least 98% of what I've seen)

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

Jurassic Park is my pick. Its far for perfect and when I saw it right after reading the book I didn't like it too much but over the years its grown on me to become a personal favorite. Its also pretty much the movie (along with Twister) that got he hooked on surround sound back in the pro logic days and was the first DVD I bought (along with Twister) the day I bought my Toshiba 2109 DVD player.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

For me, my favorite film of all time is one I can watch over and over again and still be in awe of the story, the characters, the action and any twists and turns. The one I am thinking of is one I saw when I was younger and from then on was hooked on this specific genre of movies. I can pop this film in whenever and wherever and still just feel the same way I did when I was a kid first watching.

Drum roll please......

Night of the Living Dead by George Romero.

Since seeing that film I have been obsessed with zombie movies of all kinds. I love the whole survival aspect of these films and how each character is placed in this horrific situation and has to make quick decisions that could either save or end their lives.

28 days later
Resident Evil 1,2
Dawn of the dead (original as well as remake)
Shawn of the dead
Day of the dead
I, Zombie

All movies I can watch over and over, but put anything Romero does first on my list....especially Night of the Living Dead!

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

I always have a problem with "Favorite Movie" threads... when I went through High School, every film was someone's "favorite" even if they [that person] saw four films in the same week.

So I got to where if anyone claimed it was "their favorite," I'd ask, "why?"

I have a number of "favorites." Amelie. Tampopo. Some of the Star Warses. I had completely forgotten about Abyss until seeing it above.

It's almost a "hobby" for me to answer Blade Runner, though I haven't even seen it since, oh, probably the 2000/2001 timeframe. It's so full of... character, don't'cha know? And I love the light in it, too.

But I'm also one of those sick-o's who really likes Ladyhawke too. I don't even get bugged too much by the color filters, and frankly, I rather like the score.

"Tell me, does this walking corpse have a name?"

Ah, well.. maybe I'll have to watch that again, too... time to dust off the old laserdisc. No, wait! I did get that on DVD... even if they were made from the same master tapes...

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

My favorite film of all time is THE STUNT MAN. This is a challenging film on many levels; I love the how "reality" shifts throughout the film, depending upon POV and the film within a film plot.

It's certainly the strangest screwball comedy of all time! Preston Sturges would have loved this film.

The acting was phenomenal and confirmed my belief that Peter O'Toole is the greatest actor of our time. Steve Railsback, with echos of Charles Manson from "Helter Skelter," also gives a bravo performance, combining criminal cynicism with naivete. Barbara Hershey gives her finest performance, never has she looked more beautiful and captivating.

I saw this in LA with an audience of mostly film professionals, mostly those who toil behind the camera in stunt work and craftservice. They loved it, and hearing their comments about the 'truth' (especially in regards to Eli Cross, the director (as played by O'Toole) greatly enhanced my own enjoyment.

It's my most-watched film, and I've owned "The Stunt Man" in VHS, DVD and soon HD-DVD!

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI.

I saw this in 1958 at a great old theater that had only recently installed a 2.35:1 screen. No movie before or since has had the impact for me that BRIDGE had - perfect pacing, structure, acting, everything (except for a rather lackluster Malcolm Arnold score, but I wasn't too aware of such things as music scores when I was eight).

No film since then has ever supplanted this one (for me) as the best Movie Ever.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

It's tough to pick one. I've probably seen Raiders of the Lost Ark more than any other movie, but I've watched JFK about three times a month for the past year as well.

I'm going with Raiders of the Lost Ark.

2001: A Space Odyssey is my all time favorite. Unforgettable movie watching experience from the first frame to last.

Re: Your ONE Most Favorite Film of All Time?

I'm going with nostalgia for this one.

When I was six , the world of TV and movies really entered my life. This was in 1966. Dad set me in front of the TV and said " We are going to watch Star Track" Or that is what I thought he said
So later when I was 16 or 17 when Star Wars came out, I already had been a Star Trek Geek for a decade. Funny though, Star Wars made little impression on me. I thought, and still do it was a fine homage to the serial Flash Gordon era. It never captivated me like Star Trek the TV series.
Ok, so that's why I don't enshrine Star Wars, but can never be far from giving a Vulcan peace sign

Now, onto my favorite film, Born Free.
A superb score first off. Emotional, tear jerking, and it instills a be-kind-to-nature, but let it be philosophy I still live with. I saw it when I was seven and have never forgotten it. I have revisited it now and again, and it has aged a bit in my eyes, but the message is still clear, and the score, .wonderful as always.
It helped lead me into the useless but fulfilling Anthropology and Cartography degrees I have under my belt as well!

So Born Free is my favorite film for reasons of impact on my life more than its cinematic glory, though it can stand on its own.

Let's see now, I did see Raider's of The Lost Ark 17 times in the theater when it came out I guess that one holds a bit of interest to me as well

The movie I remember surprising me the most was Evil Dead in its theatrical run. I knew nothing of it, went into a small subterranean theater that smelled of decomposing animals, and was blown away! My girl friend and I could not belive the stench in the place, but somehow we stayed and it all worked just fine
