Re: All Things Godzilla

Oooh, I just read over on DVDManiacs that Anchor Bay is releaseing Godzilla 1985 on June 24th. Anyone know anything about this, if it's just the american release with Raymond Burr? Inquiring minds want to know!

Don't get too excited. The date listed is actually June 24th 2003. I remember this release was planned but was dropped due to rights entanglements. The uncut Japanese version is available on R3 DVD from Universe (with english subs too), but it's non-anamorphic and the print has a weird green tint to it.

Re: All Things Godzilla

One must wonder what's holding up US dvd releases of Return of Godzilla and Vs. Biolante. I really want to see those!

Re: All Things Godzilla

Anchor Bay only had the rights to the American Version through their New World releases and were going to release it but when so many fans sent them e-mails requesting the Japanese version only, something they had no control over, they cancelled the release for fear of poor sales.

Re: All Things Godzilla

Ah, damnit - that's what I get for not reading the fine print! Ah well, I already have the HK import, so I'm good to go - but I was hoping to get the american version too.

I'm just obsessive that way.

Re: All Things Godzilla

Damn. The American Godzilla 1985 is my favorite! It was the first Godzilla film I saw. I've been looking for it for ages.

I have an extra copy of this Universe disc if anybody's interested. It's actually pretty decent. PM me for details.

Re: All Things Godzilla

when are TOHO gonna cough up the dough for a complete 4k restoration of GODZILLA (1954) I would have thought a 2004 50 th Anniversary edition would have been a given. The best looking disc Ive seen so far is the BFI-and it isnt stellar.

This is virtually one of their crown jewels like the Kurosawa films
(well maybe not quite) but the print is still pretty dodgy

Re: All Things Godzilla

I just finished watching my copies of All Monsters Attack and Terror of Mechagodzilla. I'm glad to finally see these movies in their original form (widescreen and in Japanese), the voices that were dubbed over the kids in these movies have always irritated me, now I don't have to listen to them. Godzilla's Revenge was always my least favourite in the series but I enjoyed it more this time. I noticed that some of the dialogue was different between the 2 versions. The transfer looked pretty good.

MechaGodzilla's introduction looked terrible. It looked zoomed in and all blurry until after the opening credits were over, then it switched to widescreen ratio. The rest of the film didn't look as good at All Monsters but I enjoyed it more. I liked both featurettes on these discs but I enjoyed the Women of Godzilla more. I hope Classic Media can get the rights to more of these movies.

Its never going to look great since Toho junked the original negative decades ago.

And even many of their Kurosawas (particularly the early ones like Stray Dog and Ikiru) today only survive on dodgy master-positives.

Hey Seven Samurai doesn't have a O-neg and it looks fine to me!

I agree though, even though Gojira is in rough shape there needs to be a more serious effort to obtain the best material possible and do a full-out restoration of it. The latest DVD was quite good considering what came before it, but I can't believe theres not room for improvement. Theres enough print damage alone that could warrant some serious digital correcting. Normally stuff like this is acceptable for old monster movies, but I think Gojira is not only an important film but it is (or at least should be) one of Toho's prized possessions.

The original neg of METROPOLIS doesn't exist either, and had to be cobbled together from many sources originating from all over the globe, but its restoration looks at least twenty times better than the current DVD of GOJIRA. Much more could be done with Toho's elements than has been done. My main beef is that the transfer is too dark, and the yellow subtitles are nigh unreadable. I don't think the people in charge of the subtitling realized that people would actually want to read them. What I want to know is who decided yellow subtitles were a good idea for any film?

Re: All Things Godzilla

Would you prefer black subtitles? I can well remember seeing many foreign films with subtitles that were wholly illegible. Trust me, yellow is a huge improvement over what was once common practice.

I agree the Criterion restoration looks pretty good, but if they had a pristine o-neg it would look A-MAZ-ING. As it stands it just looks very good considering the circumstances.

My point though is that Gojira potentially could look as good as the Seven Samurai restoration, provided Toho put the time and energy into it the way Criterion did. Instead of just looking in their vaults for the best surviving print and doing a bit of clean up they need to really make a project of synthesizing a variety of sources to create a new master better than any single surviving print would yield.

Re: All Things Godzilla

is classic media still in business? I mean, actively prepping new releases?

Re: All Things Godzilla

According to dvddrive-in.com, Rodan and War of the Gargantuas will be released as a 2-disc double feature set on Sept 9 by Classic Media. Both the US and Japanese versions will be included.

Re: All Things Godzilla

Hurrah! - Two Great films that the Japanese versions are supposedly much different-Can't wait to see them both.

Re: All Things Godzilla

I've seen the Japanese versions of both. Emotionally, I'm wedded to their American redos, the ones I grew up, which get a few things right (RODAN, especially). But the ease of compare-and-contrast will make this set a winner no matter which you prefer.

FINALLY, been waiting a long time for these.

Re: All Things Godzilla

Yes, very cool news indeed. Now if only we could get a release of Godzilla 1985, both US and Japanese cuts.

Re: All Things Godzilla

Great news! Particularly excited about Rodan as I've never seen it - either the US or Japanese version - and I've wanted to for a long time. War of the Gargantuas is a great bonus.

Re: All Things Godzilla

Looking forward to this

My Kaiju want-list is now down to 3 titles:

Mothra
Destroy All Monsters
King Kong vs. Godzilla

Original Uncut OSL Subbed NTSC versions

In that case you will really appreciate Rodan. I think one of the better movies done from that era, and the ending really well done.

Re: All Things Godzilla

That's awesome news....especially since I just bought the original art for the classic Milk & Cheese strip "War of the Gargantuas"!

I already own a copy of Rodan but would gladly double dip to get the Japanese Version. Gargantuas would be worth checking out too.

Re: All Things Godzilla

So aside from Frankenstein Conquers the World, All Monsters Attack and Terror of Mechagodzilla have there been any other recient Toho monster flicks (recient as in the last couple of months, since Ghidorah and Astromonster)?

With DDD has it's 20% off sale, I'd like to make sure that I've snapped up everything as of late.

Um, no, white subtitles with black outlines would be just fine, thank you very much. Like on most of the HK DVDs I have. If Megastar & Universe could come up with perfectly legible subtitles, ANYONE can. (A pity they couldn't come up with listenable 5.1 remixes, however.)

Yellow subtitles are a bad idea.

Though lighter on monster action than the titles you've mentioned, there's Media-Blasters' somewhat-recent release of LATITUDE ZERO (1969), as well as the earlier releases of ATRAGON (1963) and SPACE AMOEBA (1970, a.k.a. YOG, MONSTER FROM SPACE), if you don't have those already.

Also worth considering, though not Toho productions (and they've been out for quite some time):

GAPPA (1967) Media-Blasters
DAIMAJIN (1966) ADV Films
RETURN OF DAIMAJIN (1966) ADV Films
WRATH OF DAIMAJIN (1966) ADV Films
YOKAI MONSTERS: 100 MONSTERS (1968) ADV Films
YOKAI MONSTERS: SPOOK WARFARE (1968) ADV Films
YOKAI MONSTERS: ALONG WITH GHOSTS (1969) ADV Films
THE LEGEND OF DINOSAURS AND MONSTER BIRDS (1977) Media-Blasters
THE MIGHTY PEKING MAN (1977-Hong Kong, with Japanese input) Miramax
THE SUPER INFRAMAN (1976-Hong Kong, with Japanese input) Image Entertainment
