Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released? - Page 7

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

i too am in the will-buy category, just because it's this or bootlegs, same difference... Kind of like that original version of Star Wars situation last year (except then, Fox blamed it all on George Lucas, now it's clearly their fault)

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

There was a Simpsons episode that had the song "Hot Blooded". I'm behind on the DVDs, so it would be "The Two Mrs. Nahasapeemapetilons" in season 9, does it still have it on disc?

"Fly Me to the Moon" was cleared by Sony for What's Happening, Season 2. Even though it's a different show from a different studio with different circumstances, I still wonder whether Fox even tried to get any of the songs at all.

Not one episode is as it aired originally. Not one. And there are syndicated versions, too. That puts it in the category with Alf, Mama's Family, Cosby Show S1, and Roseanne S1. Shows I like, and shows I wish I could buy. I own none of those and never will until they are redone. WKRP has now joined the TV on DVD Hall of Shame.

Cancel my order, terrible dresser.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I just remembered reading a while back that Hugh Wilson was supposedly consulted on this set and worked with the DVD people on the music replacement to find worthy substitutes in cases where they would have to be used.

Uhmmmm....geez, Hugh, what the heck happened? Did they have photos of you with some kind of farm animal?

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Extremely disappointed by this news, especially with the cut scenes. Here I was, praising Fox for releasing WKRP and "The Fall Guy" in the same year. And now this mess, what a crock of ****. I just pre-ordered it yesterday, before reading this, who knows what I'd done had I known. I've tossed the thought over in my mind, and decided to keep the order, to show Fox it's a highly wanted show - and reserving the right to dump it in the trash, if it depresses me too much...I want to see this 'disaster' for myself first - before I start throwing up...

No sale, of course.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Sadly, Fox will never get it. They just figure that they are giving us WKRP and we should be happy. They will always have that "take it, or leave it" attitude. WKRP will definitely be a "leave it" for me. I was so looking forward to this, too.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I'll buy this, and I'll freely admit that the music substitutions or in some cases, utter deletions...don't bother me as much as some of you because I really don't remember the music growing up watching this show...mostly because I'm deaf in both ears with a moderate to severe loss that is correctible with hearing aids. I'm getting this more to have access to the show once again and to see the characters at that wacky Cincinnati radio station. I certainly empathize with those of you who are canceling because you don't want to spend your hard-earned dollars for dreck, though.

Upon further consideration, I, too, canceled my order even though I really want to see this show on DVD. Hopefully, all the cancellations will send Fox a message to quit doing a shoddy job on releases of older shows and treat them with the respect they deserve. If this means the end of any further WKRP releases, I guess, so be it.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Shoot, i was already on the wont buy side because of double sided discs. With edited episodes and changed music, the deal has been sealed! Thanks FOX for saving my money!

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

No sale here. For a show about a radio station, I always thought the amount of hit music for the show was miminal -- even in 1st run.

It's a damn shame that Fox has dropped the ball here...

Re: Enough already. Fox, Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I'm not even getting this from Netflix.

How can they cut footage out of Turkeys Away? That's the money episode.

Fox's movie division does an amazing job on their DVDs. They're on par with Warners. But their TV show division is dropping the ball - especially compared to Warners and Paramount.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

My biggest disappointment with this news is what it says about another Fox property I'd like to see on dvd - "The Wonder Years." We can all now rest assured that it will never see the light of day uncut. NEVER, EVER, EVER!

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I think this will be the first time that I'll pass on purchasing a set like this because it sounds like they didn't just edit episodes but that they have massacred the episodes.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I tried keeping an open mind regarding the release until I KNEW how minor or how major the cuts, changes and edits might be.

I'm pretty jaded, and expected the worst, while hoping that I'd be wrong... I was wrong, but not in the good way, it appears that the changes were far worse and more excessive than I thought possible.

But I also don't feel outraged by this. I'm pleased that many consumers will be aware of the changes so they can make their decision on purchasing it armed with the knowledge of what they would be paying for... (though it appears that Fox didn't contribute to this knowledge, they left outside sources to inform the public through a review.)

I look at it this way, because of the music clearance issues, I NEVER expected this show to have a commercial release (at least one reasonably intact), and was resigned to relying on those, um, evil, alternate sources if I wanted to relive the pleasure of watching the show.

So at the end of the day, I'm no better off or no worse off, over this news. I didn't expect to own a commercial season set release of the show, and I won't be owning one, and thankfully there are plenty other shows I enjoy that I can buy sets of instead.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

These edits are a lot worse than I think anyone expected. There should be no reason to include syndicated cuts. It makes me EXTREMELY nervous about any set of The Wonder Years coming out, a set I would easily pay upwards of 100 dollars a season if the music was intact. It makes me wonder how bad the set would be if another company handled it. But I look at it this way. Were the rights unattainable or just too expensive? Would any real fans of WKRP mind paying more for the set had they known it would be intact?

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I would pay a little more to get the show uncut with the music. Considering that Miami Vice is sort of in the same boat and Universal can get them out unmolested for about $60 a season, what's the big idea here?

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Wow, did Fox do a number on "WKRP". I expected them to slaughter this. For some reason, every series I'm eagerly wanted from this studio has always had some sort of roadblock or screw-up when it is finally released to DVD (with "The Lone Gunmen" being the only exception). Hearing that the Max Shulman estate is holding the rights to "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" when the sitcom is already to go and that both can't come to an agreement is also another situation I find myself in waiting for a Fox DVD release.

HenryDuBrow, did you have to mention "The Fall Guy" in the same sentence as "WKRP"?

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I remember fans of "WKRP" petitioning Shout! Factory to have a hand in this series to the point that they had to ask fans to stop e-mailing them. If Shout! had the rights to this series, I think we would see more care than what Fox is doing which is obviously they don't understand their fan bases most of the time. The thing about the "Wonder Years" is it had a short, 6-episode debut season. While I did watch "WKRP" on Nick-at-Nite years ago and I liked it, "The Wonder Years" is hugely important to me as a fan, especially the Bob Brush/Michael Dinner years. I guess I can now ignore the plea I made on the "Studio and Manufacturer Feedback" forum here asking them to give this sitcom a test-run on DVD by taking a financial risk and clearing the first season's original music.

The most requested series on TVShowsOnDVD.com and they're going to do the same to this one. I wish the rights to this would go to Shout! Factory.

Why isn't this thread 20 pages long yet. I was expecting the shit to truly hit the fan.

Shout! Factory did release "Freaks and Geeks". Like "WKRP", the music was critical to that show too. But Shout! managed to do it. However it is reported that music rights were a little over $1 million dollars.

I think music rights have gotten out of hand, so I can understand a studio throwing their hands up.

But still FOX, no sale of WKRP for me. Either you do it right, or lease the property to a company who has a passion for the series.

Every music and "WKRP" fan should go out and buy "Freaks and Geeks" instead. Excellent show and you'll thank me 100 times.

No music? Forget it.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Wow, that's beyond disappointing. More like infuriating.

Yep, that's a "no sale" for me too. I knew this show was going to have some replacements, but I hoped it was going to only be the stuff that was more or less background. Syndication prints and footage cuts too? No thank you.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Studios don't want to pay for licensing but they aren't shy about asking the customer to shell out money. They have more money than we do...if they can't do it right don't do it at all. Sorry for those that want to see these even if they are cut, but right is right.

Probably because the shit was put on the fan before the fan was turned on, so we had time to cover our faces.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Thank you Gord for that list of music changes. Now I know I won't be buying this set...I guess I'll simply copy my VHS over the air copies to DVD. There's no way I'm going to exchange my precious memories of the show for a different version for the sake of greed. Some of us have to do what we have to do. I'm sorry if my passing on this set will affect the possibility of future season releases, but to be honest, the rest of the series would be just as ruined as the first season has been, so does it really matter whether it gets released or not?

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

As soon as I found out that WKRP is coming out on DVD, I pre-ordered it on Amazon. After the article in TVonDVD, I cancelled the order. The music is an integral part of the show. I am not going to buy a show on DVD unless its completely uncut. What's the point otherwise - might as well watch it in syndication. And that's the point of buying TV on DVD in the first place - it's because you can't see your favorite shows uncut unless you watch them on DVD and it's a great convenient way of having all your favorite shows in order of release.

So studios, please keep your Mission Statements when you think of TV on DVD:

"As a studio, I will release TV shows on DVD uncut, complete season sets, in the best possible qualilty". Keep this mission statement in mind and you (the studio) will never ever go wrong. Simple, huh?

I'm disappointed.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

That article was a painful read for me.....with every music change, deletion, syndication cut, my heart just sank with the news. For me, my memories of WKRP included the original music.....I could have let it slide if FOX took the care to include all the important music cues that helped with the mood of each episode. For example.....'Hot Blooded' by Foreigner was perfect music for 'A date with Jennifer'. I could not possibly imagine it being replaced with generic crap...WTF were the people at FOX thinking? Now they have basically laid a gigantic turd on the show's fans. I really can't understand why FOX can't do for WKRP what Universal so far, so easily accomplished with their Miami Vice series which also has these type of music issues. I'm definitely passing on this garbage.....what would be the point of buying it.....Just to allow FOX to further destroy our memories of the show by releasing more altered episodes? No thanks!!!

Thanks for saving me money FOX. The most disappointing DVD news I've ever read in all my years with the format. Shame on you.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Couldn't they have given it to Anchor Bay, that Fox deal still on? I would gladly have payed double price for this, 25 bucks is a steal for a genius show like this, I wouldn't mind paying 50 bucks or more - for the real deal. Fox blew it, by not realizing the lenght fans would be ready to go to for their favorite show...

It would've been a lot more than 50.00. And it's very possible some songs were unavailable no matter how much money would be offered.

I've done enough work with music clearnace to know this was a lose/lose situation. Either put out a hacked up version or nothing at all.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I think part of the problem here is that execs involved in releasing the show don't realize how passionate us music lovers are about having it intact. To them the music is nothing but background noise and they think they can replace it with anything and no one will care. This shows how very little they understand about a series like WKRP and its fans.

Instead of saying, "Nope, no sale" and just ignoring this, we need to be VERY vocal about WHY we're not buying it. We don't want Fox to interpret the lack of sales as being lack of interest. They need to know that the loss of sales is due to the music substitutions.

Well I will definitely write a letter on this, the possible All That Jazz color issues, and the victims of Fox chop.
