There isn't any point in arguing logic with George when it comes to this sort of thing. He has one position that will never change no matter what the counter arguement is.

I'm afraid that's true, Katherine. And we don't even know yet what is changed, if anything.

I agree. The studios have the consumers between a rock and a hard place. If people buy the butchered verions of shows the studios will continue to release butchered versions, and if people don't buy them no more further seasons will be released.Either way,the studios win and we lose.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Yes, but it also depends on what we consider 'butchered'. George considers replaced music butchery, I don't, I will consider scenes cut or removed butchery.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

The way I look at it, you have to pick your fights. Cannell replaces music across the board, no questions asked, without ever even bothering to inquire about the costs. There could be songs he might get for free and he'd never know it because he's too lazy to pick up a phone. That sort of total disregard for the consumer (and for his works) will never get a dime of my money. Then there is the opposite end of the spectrum with Freaks and Geeks where all of the music was included. Most other shows fall somewhere in between. If a legitimate attempt is made to clear music for a show, or if all of the important pieces of music is kept in, as opposed to throwaway songs used for transitions, I'll accept it. That's provided of course that it's from a show pre-1980s as almost everything since then I either recorded myself or can get access to from others. A perfect example is going to be season 2 of Happy Days. I heard it would have cost $1.4 million just to clear all of the music and there's no way that would have happened. But I'm just glad to be getting the set and if a few Fats Domino notes aren't included, I'm not going balistic over it. There's a big difference between that and chopping out whole scenes, like Cannell did with the opening scene of the Hunter pilot.

FOX have also been known to cut out full scenes. On St. Elsewhere, they cut out the whole Samuels' John Lennon monologue in the episode "Samuels And The Kid".They could easily cut out full scenes in WKRP,as well.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

If they do that, it'll bomb. I'm not buying it then, but I have a gut feeling they won't go that far, not with Wilson's (apparent?) ok.

We don't know if anything has been cut. Let's just wait until we get further word on this before we start "bad mouthing" something we can't confirm is actually happening.

It may be good to you George, but how about taking a break from bringing down everyone else who is looking forward to this release even if some of the music replaced. WE ALL KNOW YOU DON'T WANT TO PURCHASE IT. So Don't.

Everyone out there, myself included want nothing more than to have perfectly uncut, unaltered episodes, trust me, you aren't the only one.
But seriously, let it go already..

I will be honest, as long as I can get a copy of the turkey-drop, it will be a must buy.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Why the hell did FOX fall in love with the double sided discs all of the sudden! We just got Universal to stop with it, then FOX starts! Its not that they are 2 sided. But they are scratched, finger printed, lint magnets, that are a crap shoot when you play them!

Fox has been using them for a few years now, so it's not exactly so sudden. The rest I agree with you completely.

There is one big difference though. Fox is using DVD-10 discs rather than DVD-18 discs. While they won't save you any space compared to the single sided DVD-9 discs, they are much more reliable than the DVD-18 discs Universal was using.

Five words: "Hold me closer, terrible dresser!"

Music that is integral to the scene or the plot needs to stay. I can survive without music that appears for its own sake.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Let's celebrate instead of bicker, the show they all said would never come out, is! Judging by the extras it looks like Fox put a lot into this, I doubt they'll release a travesty. They know the hot debate, that people want it as complete as possible, and now it's finally coming out. They must've thought long and hard about what they're doing, and done what they can with this cult show.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

According to this pre-order info, the release date has been delayed to April 24.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I usually do my pre-orders on series 2-3 months in advance. On this one I will wait and see the reviews after it comes out. I am not at the mercy of FOX as I have access to a complete set of 1st season off-air VHS masters recorded from the original CBS run. So it these things have been compromised to any noticeable degree, I'm going to just go with what I have.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Press release (with different features than originally indicated) and artwork.

The release doesn't mention the music issue, which I think is a little unwise. I think Fox will do better with this release if they're up-front about what has or has not been changed. (Even if they just bragged about a few of the songs that have been kept, that would be a selling point.)

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

FOX seems to have kept all the original music in the Simpsons so far. Then again, the Simpsons is the breadwinner for FOX. Although some may feel American Idol has that role, let's see that show stay on for over 16 years!

If anyone would like to give this a listen it is the Full 3 minute WKRP song. A superb theme song!!

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

We at SitcomsOnline don't have a full review of WKRP just yet (we will very soon), but we do have word on what music has been changed, and yes, what scenes have been edited:

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Absolutely disgraceful! The people,at FOX,who put out such a piss poor release,of WKRP in Cincinnati, should hang their heads in shame.Did they manage to clear the rights for any songs? I'm not surprised in the least, though,as I've been expecting that all along, though not to that extent.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I was pretty pumped for this release, even though I assumed there would be music replacement. But this is pretty extreme!! I am really disappointed. I don't know if I'll get it or not now.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Thanks, Fox, nice work. You have single-handedly allowed the bootleg-DVD market for WKRP (featuring the original songs) to explode.

What was the point of even releasing such a bastardized version of the show? Did they think fans wouldn't care or notice? Are they trying to pull one over on customers who don't know any better? Is there any type of disclaimer on the packaging alerting people to these changes? The fact they have the nerve to call it "The COMPLETE First Season" is actually pretty funny.

I would much rather have paid $50 to have a complete, uncut season 1 set instead of this shoddy, cut-up, music-replaced garbage for $25 or $30 or whatever it costs.

I will spend my money April 24 on Drew Carey season 1 now, and enjoy my old grainy recordings of WKRP the way I remember it: with songs by Elvis Costello, Bob Seger, the Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Foreigner and more.

There is a note on the back that says "Some musical content has been changed from the original airings" or something like that. That doesn't really begin to describe it, though.

You know, in normal circumstances I'm more OK with music replacements than most fans. I generally say that even if episode X and Y have had music changed, you can enjoy the other, unmutilated episodes.

The problem here is that there aren't any unmutilated episodes. The only episode with no music replacements is "Hoodlum Rock" and that's the same 22-minute syndication version found on the bootlegs.

So yeah, I'm disappointed.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

This sounds pretty outrageous. And especially changing Jennifer's doorbell music! Give me a break -- "Fly Me to the Moon" is that expensive to clear for one friggin' line? Her doorbell was a signature part of the show. Did they really think fans wouldn't remember that? And taking it away takes all of the humor out of any scene at her home.

I'm also disappointed to hear that so many scenes have been cut. Why didn't they concentrate on clearing the music that was essential?

If music is so expensive to clear that the studios cannot afford to pay for it, then something drastic needs to change in the copyright laws. I'm beginning to think consumers should band together and put pressure on the lawmakers to change them so studios are no longer punished for wanting to put out a quality release and consumers don't have to suffer the consequences.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Dammit...

No sale for sure. They even cut all the songs out from the contest episode? The half a second snippets that were almost impossible to recognize? I guess they had to cut the scenes where they list the songs as well?

No "Hot Blooded"? No "Dogs"? Feh. I know there's still tons of gold left over, but all the missing music ruins the flow and misses out on some key laughs. Some of the songs selected certainly date the show, but in this case that's a good thing.

It's a damn shame. Oh well.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

no sale.

i am very sad because i really loved this show.

Re: Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I know i'm in the minority here, but I will still buy this because I like this show. The characters and the comedy are much more important than the music. It's a shame that they couldn't at least keep some of the most vital music. But this show is not on tv anymore and I don't have many episodes on tape, and even those are the 90's syndicated vesions. So for me it's either this or nothing. I don't blame anyone else if they don't buy it, but for me I still want it.
