Star Trek Double Dip Comparisons

I'm buying a house on Monday, and thus, I'm going to be selling the older versions of my double-dip dvd releases. However, I seem to remember that some of the Star Trek films might not be as good in their 2 disc versions as in their original 1 disc incarnations.

Thoughts on whether or not I should part with Star Trek Insurrection/First Contact/Star Trek IV single discs?

Star Trek IV "The Voyage Home" - A/V quality is considered to be about the same between the two editions. The single disc release of "The Voyage Home" was 16:9 enhanced. Just for the record, the single disc versions of Star Trek V, Star Trek VI, and "Generations" were all initially released without anamorphic enhancement.

Star Trek "First Contact" - The 2 disc SE version provides a much better presentation of the movie. The single disc transfer was dark and soft by comparison.

Star Trek "Insurrection" - The video provided on the single disc version is considered sharper; but edge halos do intrude at times. The 2 disc version has no EE artifacting; but it does appear much softer (espeically in wide shots) than the single disc counterpart. I prefer the "softer" image of the 2 disc version (at least it appears more film-like); but your mileage may vary.

The Star Trek II special edition includes a couple of really cheesy scenes involving a bad actor playing Scotty's nephew.

The ST6 SE has some added material at the end which seems very pointless and jarringly out of place to me.

Yeah, but every home video release of Star Trek VI, starting with the VHS tape, includes those scenes.

The DVD that I rented the first time I watched "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" had a cool little documentary on it hosted by Leonard Nimoy, in which he walks around the lot talking about the production of the movie (special effects, props, scripting, etc). It was a nice featurette that was apparently left off the 2 disc release of the movie, and unless you don't care much about featurettes or only watch them once, if your DVD of Star Trek IV has that featurette, I would keep it.

Probably worth noting, the approximate 2:1 framing of the film was kept (apparently, with the director's approval), but I believe it was reframed for the 2nd release, for the better I'd say, but many wouldn't notice.

The 2nd edition DVD uses some alternate shots (closeups vs. wides) in a few places. Also, images were added during the mind meld (Vulcan mind rape) scene. This is arguably the worst change to the film, as it isn't done very well and the scene had more impact without them. I guess someone thought the audience wouldn't remember who all the characters were, so they felt they had to show them when their names were read.

Star Trek VI is also a DD-EX mix on the newer DVD.

Nicholas Meyer states as much on the commentary track. I don't agree with him.

Anything that gives us more Scotty gets for me.

Well, except maybe an Uhura-Scotty sex scene.

Let's hope THAT sex tape never leaks onto the Internet.

So Grant, are saying that at the end credits of the Undiscovered Country when their names are written against the star field, there is now a picture of the actor to go with the corresponding name? If so, then that is kind of lame, I liked the original ending plus I've been recently picking up all the double discs sets of the original crew's movie adventures since they are all on sale at Best Buy for $10.00. I guess I'll have to see if Amoeba has the first DVD of the Undiscovered Country.

No, the newly inserted pictures are during the mindmeld scene.

No prob, but now you may have given Nicholas Meyer an idea for the next release.

I can see them splashing up 60s shots of the original crewmembers along with their sigs. "Wow, look how fat and old everybody got!"
