5.1 is 5.1 no matter which format the audio is in. However, a title like X-Men: The Last Stand which has dts-hd 6.1 will have the additional rear centre channel and there are even a few titles that have pcm 7.1 audio. At World's End may be one of those titles.

Neil, I have all 7.1 channels hooked up from the Panasonic player to my Denon amp (rca-type jacks) but what I was wondering is, will I be getting Dolby True or DTS ES sound through those connections if I set the movie to that soundtrack? (my receiver does not decode them but the player does). Or are those signals only through HDMI audio?

The RCA jacks will output uncompressed PCM, to all 7.1 channels if thats the audio track you select. If you select Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital plus, or DTS HD, then the player will decode this into the applicable number of channels, and output this via the RCA jacks. I dont think the player can decode the DTS ES, althouygh I may be wrong. I typically used the uncompressed PCM track on Blu Ray discs if its there because i think it sounds so good. I will try a DTS ES DVD and see what happens. You will get the full sound quality though, regardless of whether the player or the amplified does the decoding, assuming the player and the reciever are of the same quality.

Craig, thanks...I've been trying to find an answer to that for a while. My Denon is a very good receiver, so I am sure it will do fine. For 3 years I didn't even know it had 7.1 channel inputs, because they are with the rest of the inputs, and the 7.1 outputs on the receiver are in a separate area. I guess I never really had to look before. I just found this a few days ago, so tonight I will be trying a few titles with DTS ES and uncompressed, and certainly those will sound great if the Dolby True and DTS ES is passed unchanged through those outputs. Please let me know how the DTS ES disc test goes.

The player doesnt seem to decode the DTS ES on a DVD, possibly because this format has been superceded (I believe) by the DTS HD and DD+ on Blu Ray discs. You can however output this as a bitstream via the optical out to your reciever, if it decodes DTS ES. Given your Denon has 7.1 inputs I think it should decode DTS ES and DD EX; what model Denon is it? I usually decode the ES/EX 6 and 7 channel sound from DVD's on my Onkyo Integra reciever, and have found this works brilliantly. The DTS ES is quite a good format I think, almost as good as a DTS LaserDisc...

My receiver is the Denon AVR-3802. I am "assuming" that sending the signals on the Panasonic will play the Dolby HD and Dolby True tracks fine (I hope).

Selecting the multi channel input on the Denon will allow you to listed to the Hi Resolution audio from a Blu ray disc. The Panasonic will decode which ever format is on the disc (ie DTS HD, DD+, linear PCM), and output this to the applicable number the RCA multi channel outputs. All the formats are output as PCM audio via the RCA leads, so any reciever with the multi channel inputs will play it. This is the beauty of a good reciever with multi channel inputs, you can connect virtually anything to them, so you wont have to keep replacing your reciever. I have my Blu Ray player, my SACD/DVD-A player, and my AC3 laser disc player all connected this way. Aside from the fact that the back of my cabinet looks terrible, its a great set up.

Craig, so how do you have more than one source feeding those 7.1 channel inputs on the Denon? Or are you using optical or a single rca-type digital sound for the ac3 laserdisc?

I have 8 3-to-1 RCA adaptors, with a small one foot long cables going to the reciever, and three sets of three foot long leads going to the various sources. This works fine, but you MUST only have one source on at a time. There is a remote control switch block you can buy which will switch 3 multi channel sources into one input, but it is very pricey. I find my set up works quite well, as I only ever use one source at a time. There are a few recievers with more than one multi channel input, but you are talking a mega dollar Macintosh or similar, which is way out of my price range.

My Sony DA4ES receiver has two sets of analogue multichannel inputs - a 5.1 and a 7.1. On top of that, I have a 3x1 5.1 passive analogue multichannel switcher from Zektor. The Sony is hardly in the price range of a Mkintosh.

I am using the Panasonic on my new Epson 1080 projector (full hd), and when I hit display on the projector, it says HDMI on, but input signal says component. I went to the settings of the Epson and made sure everything was right (I use the component for Dish network). Is there anything on the Panasonic I might have wrong? (DMP-BD10A)

I must admit my reciever is a few years old now. Back then there wasnt much with 7.1 multi channel inputs. I looked at the Zektor product online, and it does look interesting. Getting it here to Australia might cost a bit; I cant find any local agents. How have you found the Zektor? I did briefly try a cheap copy of this, which massivly affected the sound quality. Its a toss up between leaving things as they are, buying a Zector, or getting a new reciever. I really like the sound of the Onkyo, so I am reluctant to get rid of it just yet.

I think the HDMI set up is very simple, its in the 'SETUP" menu. From memory you just set what you want the output to be, ie 720/1080 etc, and connect the HDMI cable. The only other HDMI setting I am aware of in whether you want the audio signal sent via HDMI. Is the HDMI cable the only conection between the Epson and the Panny?

Yes, the HMDI cable is the only one from the Panasonic. In fact, the Epson has only one HDMI input, so I am going to have to get a good splitter if I don't change receivers. The Onkyo looks like a good one, even on Amazon, great customer ratings of 5 out of 5 every time. That's the Onkyo TX-SR805. There's also coming out this week the 605, which at $450 (saw it on sale on the web) has Dolby True HD and DTS HD....wow. It is quite a bit scaled down from the 805 though, looks likes less in the input selection. I think the 805 will handle 96/24 as well, and is THX Select. Now that's a beauty!

I set everything tonight and the Epson 1080 projector is still showing as input source: component. I am trying to find a forum on the 1080 to figure out why. It doesn't say HDMI as input signal.

I wish prices were that cheap here in Australia. I saw my reciever on sale on eBay here, a refurbished one for $2500. Are you getting the picture from the panny displayed via the 1080? I'm not familiar with this unit, sorry i cant help more.

I was looking through the manual for the DMP-BD10A on Panasonic's web site:

On the bottom of Page 5, it shows that it is not able to play BD-R, BD-RE v1/v2 discs. This was a bit of a surprise to me, but it's an important point, as I would like to create BD discs of my own (vacation videos, my kids' soccer games, photo slideshows, etc.).

This player's inability to play recordable Blu-ray discs is disappointing, as it seems like a nice alternative to the Sony BDP-S300. I'm hoping that perhaps this was resolved via a firmware update, but I couldn't find any information related to that, so I figured I would ask some owners to get some more details.

Can the DMP-BD10A play BD-R's and BD-RE's that can be bought in stores and used to create home videos?

My plan is to keep this player BD-10A and the 2 sets of 5 discs that came with it, one inside box and one rebate) untill the next generation, and I want one that plays all of the new sound formats plus has the better upconverting chip used in the Toshiba and the Samsung. Samsung is coming out with 3rd generation players in September and October and their top of the line ($599 I think) will do all that, waiting to see about DTS master on this player. The trouble is that Samsung started as a really cheap company, so I have reservations, have never purchased their products, but Denon and Pioneer Elite and others will surely have their new players by the holidays. I will sell this one on Ebay, but I must say I do like this player. I would love to have it back-lit, it surprises me that the remote doesn't have that as most people that buy these players are in dark movie rooms.

I used the supplied remote for about an hour and then I put it's codes on my pre's remote. I might have used the original once since then....

The Zektor is great. There is no noticeable difference in SQ whatsoever. I don't know how their current models are, as the one I have is now discontinued. Mine is strictly a 5.1 analogue multichannel audio switcher. I notice now they have moved to combination analogue/HDMI switchers, and component video switchers.

I need your help. I have the BD10A.. I am using an HDMI cable to my new Epson 1980 (full hd) projector. On the input signal on my projector, it says source: hdmi, and then INPUT SIGNAL: COMPONENT. I called Epson and we did some tests with the DISH dvr and all was correct, so he thinks something is set wrong with the Panasonic, as Input signal should say HDMI. Can anyone help? I have a friend here from 3 hours away who is here to check out my system (another techy-guy), and will only be here until Sunday, so if you know more, please let me know. Thanks much.

A keen-eyed poster on another forum noted that Panasonic posted a firmware v.2.3 update this morning for "Playability and stability." (Haven't we heard those words before? ) It's on the global web site here http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...d10/index.html

I downloaded the file on an iMac, burned a CD and updated my BD 10 player successfully. With all due respect for Rachael's point of view, I am glad that Panasonic has apparently committed itself to continuous improvement of our favorite player.

I'm not against the upgrades. I'm gettin' 'em. I wish they'd really nail one so we don't need anymore. I'd like to stop even thinkin' 'bout firmware at some point.

I have only just managed to get 2.2 downloaded. It seems they have a compatability issue with Windows Vista, and you cant burn the disc if you use vista. I am curious though, my player came with 1.4, and now has 2.2 loaded, does 2.2 include the DTS HD and DD THD decoders from 2.0?

As far as we know, everything is cumulative.

Just curious, does this player output 1080p at 24 frames per second, or is it another frame rate. I cannot find any info anywhere, and it is bugging me. And if it does, will that depend on the disc being played?

Just got a DMP-BD10A. Annoyed to find that, when listening to a CD, the audio drops out for about a full second when I turn on my HDMI-connected display.

It's establishing the HDCP handshake. Turn on the display before you start playing the CD.
