Hmm. It is highly likely that the BD10 has HDMI 1.2a which introduced interoperability of command signals between devices connected by HDMI. This permitted Panasonic to feature - and hype - its trademarked EZ Sync HDAVI Control.

I am picking up my BD10a tomorrow....how can one tell which version of the firmware the player has in it? Also, can anyone talk about the upconversion of this player? How is it? I tried the new Sony player for a few days and that seemed like nice upconversion. But I read everywhere this player beats the Sony in many areas. Is it true that there is no door open/close from the remote?

I have no idea about the firmware. It's my impression that my Toshibas will upconvert better. I've just quit upconverting DVD's for now. There's no buffer on my A10 for DVD layer changes. You always know just where they are. I've heard that the Panasonic 1200 is the best upconverting BD player. I have the Sony 300 now, for a few weeks. I don't have it in the same system as the Panasonic. There is a non-mechanized door flap on the Panny and no Open from the remote. I don't think that's a big deal. The flap door is silly and a fashion statement I suppose...?

As for its performance as an upconverting DVD player, Secrets scored the BD10 an 83 (out of a theoretical 100). That benchmark review apparently is no longer posted (it was done months ago, before several firmware updates) but it means the BD10 does a very satisfactory job. That is my experience, too.

I picked up my player today (BD10A) and tonight watched Twister. Yes, great upconversion. It was definately better than the Sont 300 I tried for a few days last week. I love the movie so I have seen it many times on regular dvd players, and this was the best it ever looked (Using Epson 1080 hd projector at 150' diag). The great thing is that there are 5 movies inside the box (funny and strange because one of them,Pirates of the Caribbean has a Best Buy price ticket on it-go figure)...and then to top it off, there is a mail in rebate for 5 more movies. The way I figure, if I sell these movies (Not too many I am excited about) that's a 300.00 value, plus with my 12% discount card I had for the Rewards Zone, the player cost me about 250.00 with tax.

The set up was very easy, and the jacks on the back are awesome, 7.1 channel rca-type jacks for future receiver. I don't really mind that there is no open/close on the remote, I can stand there for 3 seconds or less for eject, but I really wish the entire remote was back-lit. Most use these in a darker home theater room, so I don't understand this. I suppose I am going to have to learn this remote and where the buttons are so I can feel my way to what I need to press. I think the remote is set up nicely.

Very happy. Now I need to get a few movies, as the ones that came with it I don't want to keep. I recommend this deal to anyone who hasn't taken the jump. I felt very confident at check-out seeing the new sound formats on the box, knowing I am ready.

DR Bonbi...I tried what you said to get the firmware version but it doesn't show anything. The only "status" under display is STATUS MESSAGES, and I held that down.

Has anyone had a problem with the set up menu where you select an item from the left side, and the go to the right side to make a selection, and you cannot get back to the left column. It has happened 80% of the time. Anyone?

later posting: I found the firmware version, it is 2.0. Do I call Panny for a disc for 2.2? What are the changes? (I have never updated a video machine before).

Just purchased this player, expect it to arrive very soon now. I have set the HDMI cable to my monitor and the 7.1 RCA's to my reciever... now waiting patiently for the courier to turn up. I haven't bothered with an optical connection, as i'm assuming i can just use the decoders in the player... is this correct?

I noticed Craig is using rca 7.1's to connect to his 7.1 receiver. This brings a question, could he also do the same thing via hdmi and still get 7.1, assuming he has hdmi on his receiver of course?

You won't need the optical connection because it would be a redundant connection.

wowm they don't know what's going on in their department. I will forward the link back to Panasonic. I have never downloaded an update for anything on my video/stereo system. Can someone tell me how to do this? How do you make it, on a dvd or a cd? Just copy the file to the cd or dvd?

That link takes you to a series of pages that give complete information. You burn the downloaded image to a CD, then "play" the CD in the BD10/BD10A. It's all explained clearly.

It takes a few minutes to download via highspeed or couple of hours via dial-up. Once you double click the file to uncompress it, you store that file onto a cd and boot up the player with that cd. The update procedure takes about 10-15 minutes to do with that cd on the panasonic br-player. Do check the link and print out the instructions and follow them though. I have done it about 5 times now with no problems.

Does this mean I will get better sound if I get a new reciever with HDMI, which can decode lossless audio? I assumed whether the reciever or the player decodes the audio, it would sound the same, depending of course on the quality of the components. in any case replacing the reciever is not a road i want to go down yet, because it is a good reciever, and the 7.1 multi channel inputs make it extremley versatile. My other question is are there actually and Blu ray movies with 7.1 channel lossless audio tracks? Most I have seen hase DD+, DTS HD, and PCM 5.1.

Craig,

No, you're right. Where the decoding takes place doesn't matter as far as the quality of the result is concerned.

Of course, it does matter whether or not the decoding is done by a fine decoder or by a mediocre one.

Currently, the players seem to have the very best decoders available (those who do have a specific decoder, of course).

I just stumbled across a review of "Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls" here http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...Little%20Girls which reports that "The soundtrack is is presented in uncompressed 7.1 PCM."

That puts my mind at rest. i guess with all the different formats around now, it makes sense to have the decoders in the individual players, and the reciever is basically an amplifier. I have always found that a dedicated amplifier does sound better than a reciever, although this is usually only noticeable with music not movie soundtracks. Then again, the way things are going with high quality sound tracks on Blu Ray and Hd DVD, there might well be a case for ditching the A/V reciever, and simply running the multi channel output from a Blu ray player to a dedicated pre amp / amplifier set up. I guess time will tell whether anyone out there builds a 7 channel amplifier. Food for thought though....

I know this has been asked before, I saw it on the forum...but I searched the pages and cannot find it now so please excuse if this is a repeat question. I have the DMP-BD10AK. I also have the Denon AVR 3802 receiver, which has rca-type inputs for 7.1. If I select DTS HD or DOLBY TRUE HD or UNCOMPRESSED tracks on a blu-ray disc, what happens when it gets to the receiver if I have the 7.1 rca-type connectors going between the Panasonic and the receiver? Am I getting the true uncompressed sound and the dolby/dts hd? (I don't have any discs yet for blu-ray so ordered some from Netflix to check out the different sound qualities). Any information would be very appreciated.

It was down but now it's back up, not sure if it's fixed. I havn't installed yet.

Nothing was wrong with the download in the first place, as evidenced by the repost being exactly the same size as the original down to the last byte. Since Panasonic did repost it after review, I think that is assurance enough that it is safe to use. I used the original download and updated my BD10 without a hitch.

i finally got my player and have set it up. Awesome, The picture and sound are both stunning. I havn't really adjusted any of the picture settings on the player yet, I am just using them as they come, to my display, which has simply been calibrated from the THX set up dvd. I have mainly been listening to audio from the PCM tracks, which i think is awesome. I checked the firmware, and it is 1.4. I tried to download the 2.2 from the website, and then burn it to a CD, but it doesnt seem to work. the file size is different to the website sais it should be, so maybe that is the problem. Has anyone else has this problem?

Folks definitely have had problems with downloading and burning this v.2.2 file. Are you comparing the compressed file size to that given on the Panasonic download web site? If so, that is the correct procedure. The language on the Panasonic download site is somewhat confusing.

The downloaded compressed file is "UPDATE_BD10PP_V22.exe" and has a file size of 22,787,792 bytes. If your compressed download file size (for North America) isn't exactly 22,787,792 bytes, trash it and download it again until it exactly matches the given file size.

The decompressed file will be named "PANA_DVD.FRM" and has a file size of 34,431,808 bytes. This file is the one you want to burn to a CD. After burning, the file size and title should remain the same. (The title of the CD can be anything.) I updated my BD10 successfully with the original file just hours after it was posted. I just downloaded the file again now and the above info remains accurate.

Can anyone tell me what the updates for this are? Will one be able to play DTS-ES now? And my other question. I Have a 5 year old Denon receiver that has 7.1 rca-type jack inputs. When I play a movie on the BD10A, and select DTS HD, Dolby True HD or uncompressed 5.1, what is coming out of those 7.1 outputs and into the receiver's? Is it true DTS ES or Doilby True HD or uncompressed 5.1 (depending on what I select on the blu-ray disc)? I would appreciate know this thanks. I think it has been posted but don't have time to go through all of these pages, sorry if it's a double post.
