Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I loaded mine with 2.2 last night. With no detailed indication as to what the update does, I was not able to tell what difference there was compared to the previous 2.1 version.

Well, it says:

1.Playability and stability
2.DTS-HD Playback Enhanced

Not exactly 'detailed', I know. I've seen one person claim that DTS-HD decoding sounds vastly better than before, but I haven't tested a disc, so I can neither verify nor deny that claim.

It's in the fine print here http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...d10/index.html

Note: In order to update your Panasonic BD player using this site, it is required that you create an update disc by downloading the latest "firmware" available for your Player and writing it onto a CD-R disc. If you do not have the means to create a CD-R disc, please contact the Global Service Center Network to have the latest update mailed to you.

The hypertext link takes you here http://panasonic.net/support/gscn/

I'm itching to pick this one up. Are the free BDR's all the standard releases, or are they downgraded in any way with regards to packaging or content?

Re: Firmware v.2.2 pulled!!!

Some folks on another forum have reported problems with firmware v.2.2 locking up their machines during the upgrade process. Panasonic reportedly is issuing return labels, etc., for factory repair. Now the firmware has been pulled from all download sites. The highest now available is v.2.1.

I hope everyone here came through without problems.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I finally recieved my Zektor HDS4.1 and was able to get it hooked up. I am now able to enjoy lossless sound on both my DMP-BD10A and HD-A1. All I can say is that the difference with the sound is incredible. WOW!!! I can't believe how much better PCM lossless is. The sound is crystal clear and the bass is deep and powerful. I watched a bit of both Pearl Harbor and Hellboy. The difference is night and day. The bass is insane. Surround movement and subtle effects are more realistic and details are more noticeable. I can't wait to try out the rest of my Blu-Ray collection (POTC, Black Hawk Down, Kingdom of Heaven, etc.) this weekend.

Regarding update 2.2, I went ahead and downloaded the update from the site and burned it to CD-R, but I haven't gotten around to loading it on my player. Thankfully, after reading the comments here and on other forums, I will definitelly hold off. The fact that Panasonic removed it from their site is not a good sign. The only downside, which is minimal, is that I've wasted a CD-R disc. No biggie.

Looking at Panasonic's webiste, if you are uncomfortable burning your own update desk, the only way to obtain one from Panasonic is to call the 800 number. If anyone knows a way of doing it through the website, please let us know.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Dana,

I saw the link. From there, you have to select the country (USA), and then from there you have to input the model number or select from a list of available products. There is no option for the DMP-BD10A.

Is the artwork identical also or is it different like what Sony did with the PS3/Talladega Nights?

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I need some help understanding a couple of things. In the audio setup portion of the 10A it gives the choices of PCM or bitstream for Doldy TrueHD. When would I use one over the other? Also, as I asked elsewhere, I have an older Pioneer 1014TX. If I use the Multichannel connections will I get TrueHD?

And how will I get TrueHD when I upgrade my receiver to one that decodes/supports it?

You want to set the audio on the player to PCM. If it's set to bitstream, the audio will be downmixed and it will just sound like a regular DD/DTS soundtrack.

And yes, if you use the multichannel connections on your receiver, you can play back TrueHD/uncompressed PCM soundtracks. Right now, the mulitchannel outputs and HDMI are the only ways you can play back those soundtracks, unless you have a new receiver that can decode the tracks.

There are reports on this thread of folks who sent in their cards getting the factory v.2.0 firmware CD as Panasonic promised. What version are you looking for? You may have better luck calling Panny @ 800-833-9626.

If you don't get any results, send me a PM with your mailing address and I'll send you mine. I don't have any need for it and I know it works.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I have been doing some testing of the BD10A along with the PS3> I had herd that the PS3 is great BD player. SO far I can say that the PS3 is slick and quick. The Panny is a little slower in all areas. Noticeably so but not mind numbing. I just picked up an Onkyo that does all the advanced audio. I got the 605 and am debating getting the 805 but I don't think I will need all the stuff it has to justify the price. Anyhoo...

PQ-so far the panny gets the nod. The PS3 to me is too dark and it is not easy to adjust on the fly. I could of course adjust my TV setting on the fly but not the player. They are pretty close but for my eyeballs the panny is more satisfying. You can adjust many settings on the Panny on the fly. WHich is great because then I don't have to mess with my TV settings. Of course I could just set the inputs for each variation of viewing. But that takes time.

SQ. Again the Panny. Just seems to be more detail in the sound. Cleaner. The PS# seemed a little held back. If that makes any sense. I will be renting/buying some discs that have true HD and DTS HD MA. I know nether do the MA but I am going to run it through and see what I come up with.

Another thing about the PS3 is that you will hear the fan. No questions about it. It does run hot.

I am using POTC Dead Man's Chest and Superman Returns BD's. In POTC there is much light and dark. I am getting more detail in the Panny than the PS2. I will keep experimenting and adjusting to see what I come up with. I was really hoping the PS3 would take the lead but not so to this point. I am pumping out the sound bitstream all HDMI.

Again The PS3 Slick and quick. SOund and PQ are a question at this point. Panny slower but more flexible, better PQ and SQ. Stay tuned.

They apparently have reference to this web site http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs...RayDiscPlayers which only shows v.2.0.

But, your point is pertinent. You might try again in the hope of getting a different CS rep.

My new BD10PP had a yellow sheet directing me to panasonic.net - then a banner to the firmware site (.jp server BTW) and the firmware is 2.2 - The CSRs are not giving you the right info.

Oh Mac Users! Expand the exe with stuffit and drop the PANA_DVD.FRM right into toast or disk utility under data. Burn at 4-8 instead of fast speed. Do not try to burn as image.

Works like a charm.

Other item - Panasonic dists. in my area are re pricing the 10PP-K at 599 to match the 10A. Only difference is the free movie pack and the read write drive in the older model.

So, if you can't get a 10A and don't care about the titles, get a 10 and run the update. Bing!

The 10A has HDMI 1.3x the older Panasonic has HDMI 1.2. I confirmed this with Panasonic.

Thanks for adding that.
Moot for my set up at the moment (no HDMI in the audio path) but useful for the newest receivers.

Yet another attractive feature of this player. Although I can't utilize it yet, my next set of equipment (2008) will surely take advantage.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I went to Best Buy and saw this player but there is only 1 left, I would get it now but I already brought a HD-A20 DVD Player so money is tight so hopefully next week it won't be sold out

I spoke with two different folks at Panasonic this week and both said that it has HDMI 1.1. They also said that there would be a firmware update to do java 1.1 Should I believe them?
