Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I think I found it. This was over at AVS:

DD: Bit Stream
DD+: PCM
TrueHD: PCM
DTS: Bit Stream
DTS-HD: PCM

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Hi folks,
Got my BD10 a couple of days ago, Region B (Australia), firmware 1.4. I need some advice re HDMI Video format please. Connected to my early model 60" Samsung LCD, Belkin pure video HDMI to DVI cable. My problem is that I can't change the HDMI Video Format from "Automatic" to any of the manual settings, which remain greyed out. I understand that the Panny "negotiates" with my Sammy on startup but it will not allow me to change resolution beyond 576/480p. The native resolution of my Sammy is 720p and it will accept 1080i - I have no difficulty sending upscaled 1080i from my Pioneer DVD DV-S969Avi to the Sammy over the same cable and also from my Strong 5490 PVR but the best I can get from the Panny is 576/480p from Blu ray or DVD . I can send 1080i from the Panny using Component. Is it possible that the Panny just does not want to "shake hands" with my Sammy HDMI vs DVI ?? Sorry if this is all a bit long winded.
Best wishes,
Ron
ps: My Samsung LCD received a firmware upgrade a couple of years ago and I believe it is HDCP compatible or it wouldn't accept the 1080 signal from the Pioneer.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Ron,

I doubt that you would see any picture using HDMI if there was no HDCP handshake. If your display is native 720p, the TV will convert any incoming signal to 720p including 1080i and 480p. I'm not sure why you can't set the Panny to input 720p; it may have something to do with PAL with which I am not familiar.

Maybe someone from Down Under will comment. I wish I could be more helpful.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Thanks for your advice Dana - very much appreciated. I'm taking it into my local Panasonic Service Centre next week, just up the road thankfully, to plug it into a much more upmarket Plasma & see what happens.
Cheers

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Between the price point and the free discs, now I'm not sure whether this or the PS3 should be my first Blu Ray player.

Re: Firmware v.2.1 posted dated 5/31/07

Panasonic has posted the latest firmware v.2.1 here http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...bd10/bd10.html for "Playability and stability."

All feedback welcome!

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I got "playability and stability" all those other upgrades. What the hell is it? Is gonna make Pirates Of....play better? I have 'em but haven't put 'em in yet. I keep hearing they've given some players fits. I'm so used to BD's playing flawlessly that I can hardly imagine Johnny's depness duping my deck. I'll get it, of course, but at what point are these upgrades gonna end. Are we warm yet?

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Hi Folks,
I've just loaded firmware 2.1 (Oceania). It loaded much quicker than version 2.00. The only other thing I have observed at this stage is that chapter skips, and chapter selection from the menu are much faster than they were previously. That's about it from me, off now to watch Night at the Museum again so 'good night and good luck' - er, as they say.
Best wishes from Oz,
Ron

I think there's reason to be pleased with this latest firmware update, over and above the actual content, because Panasonic released a firmware update for the BD10a at the same time. What would we be saying if the BD10a was the only firmware update released? It wouldn't be pretty.

I'll take all the updates Panny wants to send. And I am glad that Panny hasn't "forgotten" all of us who supported the BD10 by buying it.

But, aren't the BD10 and the BD10a the exact same component, the only difference being the BD10a comes pre-loaded with Firmware 2.0?

Very possibly. At least we can say for certain that the 2.1 firmware update is identical in size for both models.

My point is that I appreciate that Panasonic continues to support the BD10 even though it has brought forth a "newer" model. Let's hope it continues.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Dana, or anybody else, do you think we're atleast near the end of upgrades? Our players must be near the end of it's limits, or no??? I'm thinking that there are no more major audio upgrades.

I hope we hit a point this year where our players are complete as they'll ever be. I'd like to not have to think about firmware at some point.....

I recall reading somewhere where Panasonic said that there were still firmware updates in the works for the BD10 for later in the year. I'm not sure what those would be for though. We know they can't add DTS-HD MA decoding. Perhaps they can add a bitrate metre? I'm sure most firmware updates from now on will mostly deal with stability issues.

Support for 1080/24 would be good for when I get around to upgrading my TV. Yes, a bitrate metre would be nice and a better timer.

Cheers,
Ron

Question: This unit supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio. Does it do DD+?

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Anyone having subtitle problems w/this player? It may have happened after the last update but now my player always starts with subtitles turned on? It's really annoying and I can't seem to find a setting in the menu that will KEEP it on "NO SUBTITLES". Just checked other discs and it seems to only be on the Blood Diamond BD. Maybe it was just accidentally authored that way. Anyone else experience this?

In the "Better late than Never" Dep't

I just received my promised Firmware 2.0 update from Panasonic on a disc today! "We appreciate your patience in this matter" the enclosed note says.

Well, at least Panasonic knows I own a DMP-BD10 Blu-ray player and not a Blu-ray recorder for which they called some time ago to offer an extended warranty.

I got the same disc in the mail today Dana. I'm already up to 2.1 though. It is the thought that counts....

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

How does this player compare A/V-wise to the PS3 and other BD players. I'm thinking about picking this player up.

With the recent firmware updates, I believe this player now excels and may be the only player to decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD as well as providing 7.1 audio when (rarely) offered on a Blu-ray disc. For a first gen player it is reasonably "future proof."

One small correction. It is the only player providing 7.1 analogue output. The PS3 and first-gen Sony provide 7.1 PCM and TrueHD decoding via HDMI, and if I'm not mistaken all of the other BD players are capable of at least providing 7.1 PCM via HDMI as well.

My receiver has HDMI inputs, so that's how it would be hooked up. My main concern is with PQ. Where does this stand with the rest of the BD players? It will only be used for BD. I'm using the toshiba HD-XA2 for SD-DVD's.

Probably the most complete review of it is here http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volum...07-part-1.html Even this review is a bit dated, as there have been two firmware updates since this was written. But to sum it up the reviewer says

Quote:
Without a doubt, the Panasonic is a superb next-generation player. Unlike the previous players I've tested, it handles like a standard DVD player and doesn't have any of the quirks associated with a PC based solution.

I have both the Samsung BDP1000 and the Panny with latest FW updates, and I would definitely give the edge to the Panny in all departments, especially with the latest audio additions.

Same here. I haven't tried any discs, so I can't say exactly what it did.
