Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread - Page 15

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

The 899.99 price is now showing up on the ValueElectronics site. Unless it just has some spooky way of knowing I'm a HTF member (I didn't go through a link or anything). When I put it in my cart (to check shipping), it did say "HTF-member price."

A lot more units should start selling with 400 bucks off retail. I just wonder if the DMP-BD10a's price will keep falling if and when it debuts in the U.S. It's not a full-fledged new model so it doesn't really warrant being priced more than the original; it would be worth waiting for if the price drops a little more and it has all the audio decoding out of the box.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Hi,
I am new to this forum as you can see but I am extremely keen on high quality audio & video. As I am from Australia, info is not so easy to get so I have decieded that the panasonic BD 10 is the way to go. To help me how to set this up can somebody please explain how to set the panny up to output LPCM to the analoge outs (6) for the highest possible sound quality as I am going to use the Conrad Johnson MET1 valve 6 channel Pre Amp. How would this compare to say the digital dolby trueHD. Lastly, which Blu ray titles are LPCM. Bitstream, is not the way to go so I understand.
Thanks Mates

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I use HDMI for my audio so I'm not too familiar with the analogs. All Sony & Disney discs have lossless PCM tracks. Lion's Gate is beginning to put them on their recent discs as well. Fox has their DTS-MA version of lossless PCM, but no players can decode those yet.

Is the VE price of $900 the best I'm going to find right now?

Looks like it. If you want good laugh, head to Vanns.com, where they have a SALE on it--$20 off! $1279 instead of $1299.

Still playing the waiting game myself. Interesting that it's now cheaper than other models that debuted for less than the Panny. Then again, it's been out a lot longer.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Ordered. I'm soooo pumped.
Went with Robert's $899 + shipping + extended warranty
I did see Vann's price and I got a chuckle out of that.
I can't wait to get it.

Jason... how are you liking your Panny? Robert is a great person to do business with!

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Ben - I am loving it. I just watched Crank and the PQ blew me away. Uncompressed sound is heaven. Man this thing rocks. After having some issues getting 1.4 loaded, the thing has been spotless.

fantastic! The Panny just doesn't behave like a 1st gen unit, does it? I have been continually impressed with its flawless operation!

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

My Panny has had some minor episodes but NOTHING like all the Toshibas I have/had. Last week The Sentinel frooze up my deck. I put it in and I loaded it. Then I changed my mind and decide to view another title. I hit eject and the deck just sat there chugging, unable to comply. This went on for about 3 minutes and then the deck powered down. I turned the power back on and it was then wiling to eject. A few days later I tried The Sentinel again and had no problems. It must of been some kind of fluke...?

I did have another, similar freeze-up incident but I can't recall it clearly. It might be in one of my posts? I've driven my Panny hard and I'm quite content with it's fun per gallon. My Panny ain't purr-fect but close enough for comfort.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

I haven't had a single incident with my Panny running any firmware revision (at 1.4 now). If I didn't know that it was first generation, I'd never believe it.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Yep, no glitches at all with the Panny for me either. Even my Samsung has played perfectly so far with the exception of the Speed issue (which was Fox's fault).

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Alleged insiders at AVS forum are saying the Panny cannot be upgraded to decode DTS-MA!

Anyone with Panasonic connections able to confirm or deny this? Be sure to look at the thread linked in the first post on that page.

I was in the process of picking up a BD-10, but if this is true I must get out of it.

Edit...

let's try linking to the actual posts with the actual comments:

this indicates that the Panny, based on chip-limitions, may be upgradable to Dolby True HD and DTS-HD but not DTS-MA.

Both links are taking me all over the place now, so depending on your browser you still may have to do some scrolling.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Is there any further news on the upgrade to lossless dts HD MA or lack thereof? I don't suppose that if the upgrade is not possible to this one sound format, that the dts HD high resolution can be "pulled" from the dts HD lossless source?

Not "limitations" per se, but miscalculation on DTS' part on the DSP power required to decode their signal.

Other than studios engaging DialNorm there really no reason to support it over Dolby TrueHD. THD requires less DSP, and less data.

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Does anybody know how to get around the region coding for the Panny. I have a region B but am desperate to be able to get blu ray films that are region A. Yes I know some blu rays are region free but there are films I want that are not.
Thanks all & from Australia

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Just got the Panasonic blu-ray player last night - it was an open box deal marked down $500 so I couldn't resist. I love it so far. My wife and I watched Happy Feet which looked incredible and sounded great too (through the digital output - I use a Theta Casanova so I'm stuck with that). Really doesn't perform like a 1st generation product.

A few questions:
(1) I have it connected to a Panasonic 50" plasma through component outputs - I set the output to 1080i - is this the best option?

(2) when playing non-blu-ray discs, do any settings need to be changed (manually) on the player?

THanks

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Your Panny plasma probably has a pretty nice scaler on board, so setting the Blu-ray at 1080i is a good option. As far as component is concerned, I would upgrade your connection to HDMI as soon as possible. You will definitely see an improvement in the picture quality with the HDMI connection. Good quality HDMI cables can be had relatively inexpensively these days... be sure to visit some of the forum sponsors for good deals on cables. Robert from Value Electronics is a good person to work with - - perhaps he could hook you up!

I wouldn't worry about changing any settings on the the player for now. There should be a new firmware upgrade sometime soon... do you know what version you player is running now? You should be at v.1.4

Enjoy that Panny and be sure to pick up a copy of Casino Royale - - it is spectacular!

v. 2.0 BD10 Blu-ray Disc Player Firmware Download

Panasonic has now posted the much-anticipated v.2.0 firmware on its global Blu-ray Disc Player Firmware Download web site here http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...d10/index.html I have successfully downloaded the update (s-l-o-w download), burned a CD and have confirmed the v.2.0 North America update to the BD10.

In addition to incorporating prior updates, this one has the following content:

Quote:
1. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio are supported. A new decoder is incorporated to support the latest high quality multi-channel surround sound formats.
2. Functions of EZ Sync(North America) or VIErA Link(Europe/UK, Oceania) are enhanced. You can now seamlessly operate multiple connected components with one remote control.
3. Playability and stability

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

Hey Dana! You don't have to send me upgrade discs anymore I used my new computer to download the 2.0 update just now. I hardly knew what I was doing but somehow got it onto a CD-R and the player updated fine. I checked out a bit of Stargate in DTS HD and it sounded good. I'll check other titles later.

From what I've read the Fox dts hdma titles will downrez to dts core so I'm not very happy knowing I have to buy another player within a year to get DTS HDMA

Steve,

Good to know!

I'd hold off on any future purchases. Panasonic may not be finished with upgrades for the BD10 according to a knowledgeable dealer on another forum http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...8#post10330118

Sorry to be late to the party, but Panasoinic's BD product manager just called me to say we're good to go and the TruHD audio sounds fantastic. Congratulations Panasonic for being the only BD player with lossless audio decoding built-in.

BTW, my contact told me no more DMP-BD-10s till August - September. So grab one if you can still find any. Also the DMP-BD10A is exactly the same unit as our DMP-BD10, but with the 2.0 firmware. So no new Panasonic BD models are likely to appear till 2008. New firmware is planned and will take care of upgrading the player to accommodate more features.

---

Very sorry to tease, anything I know, which is not much, was told to me privately and I was asked not to specifically say anything. More is planned than I even know so hold on, more good upgrades are planned for early summer.

But he's wrong about it being the only BD player with lossless decoding built-in, seeing as how the PS3 has always had Dolby TrueHD decoding. I'm glad the update has come, but it wouldn't have effected me anyway, as I still don't have any DTS-HD-HR titles, but quite a few MA titles. I would have liked the analog outs, but not for the $300+ premium.

Dana,

You're not really telling us that you go all the way and visit another forum just to consult our own official HTF Expert Robert_Zohn?

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

The BD10a will not have dts hdma per avs as it's supposedly just a bd10 with the newest firmware Inother words, better to just buy a bd10 now and upgrade it if you're looking for one. Robert stated stock on the current model is dwindling now too so just an FYI if you're looking at a Panasonic.

Quick, stupid question:

How can I tell which version of the firmware my Panasonic is sporting?

Thanks

Re: Official Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-Ray player thread

So what should be the correct settings once we are done with 2.0 download? I have HDMI connecting to A/V receiver and HDMI from it to display. Should they all be PCM?
