I you leave it on, it has an automatic shut-down that will kick in. I can't remember for sure at the moment but there might have been two choices of times for the kick off on the setup menu??? I'll have to look at it again to be sure if there is an always on mode. Why do ya need that?

One minor complaint about the Panasonic so far is that, like a great many other Panasonic components I've owned, the remote window isn't very wide. Thus, it was hard to hit the window at the original, high rack location I'd assigned the deck. I moved it lower and sent my really easy to hit DirecTivo to the high perch. It's better now....

I watched M!3, The Great Raid, and Under Siege on the deck in the last few days. It performed very well on all three. I watched MI3 in both formats and it was relatively the same. The weak spots in the discs were EXACTLY THE SAME in both formats, even. BTW, the BD s MPEG2 and the HD-DVD VC1, of course. I have some older BD's waiting for a re-run....T1 & T2 are amongst them.

I'm gonna try the analog out's sometime soon. My Toshiba is gonna lose it's place on my head unit's 5.1 in for awhile.

I saw both projectors at CEDIA and, quite frankly, I don't think the Mitsu HC5000 is as good as the Pearl. Yes, it produces a fine picture, but since it's an LCD projector it still has the "screen door" effect (albeit slightly less at 1080p). I greatly prefer LCoS over LCD for a number of reasons - screen door effect and poorer blacks being the major ones. That's my personal preference. Interestingly, at CEDIA Mitsubishi displayed this set with the picture so high up in the air in their booth that it was impossible to get really close to the screen. All other manufacturers had their screen displays at eye level. I got the feeling they really didn't want viewers to look too closely at the image. Screen door anyone?

My next FP will be 1080p - that's for sure, David. But it will be LCoS (SXRD, D-iLA or whatever other flavor) over LCD. Actually, I'm still a DLP fan, but cost limits me to 1080p single chip models for now. The three chip 1080p DLPs are still way up in the stratosphere for me. But there's always CEDIA 2007.



Right now I'm focusing in on the following 1080p FPs: 3 chip LCoS (Pearl or upcoming JVC) or 1 chip DLP (no particular model yet.) The trade off with 1-chip DLP is a possible "rainbow effect" (I'm not affected by this but some are) for slightly better blacks in DLP, at least to me.

You got your wish, David. 1080p is definitely ready for prime (affordable) time.

Stoped in and caught a quick look at the Panasonic Blu-ray today. From what I saw video wise it looked really good. The pictures of the face of the player do not do it justice. The player looked alot better in person but I thought I should have weighed more than it did. But it just may end up in my HT around March 07.

Hi all,

First time poster. I know it is not necessarily a primary feature of this player but I'm interested in its CD audio upsampling capabilities. We have a lot of CDs and try to get the most out of them in our system. I am presently using a Toshiba SD-900 as a multi-disc player (for DVD's, DVD-A etc) but as a transport only for CD - digital data from CD is output to an external Elektra (local brand) 24bit 192Khz upsampling DAC. Pretty happy with the result, a warmer sound more analogue than digital. If I go blu-ray then the three units will occupy a fair bit of real estate in our entertainment unit. A solution like this player (if it upsamples CD audio, and does it well) which lets me lose the Toshiba and the Elektra would be ideal. My queries therefore of owners are does the panasonic player upsample CD audio and is there a significant difference in quality over your straight CD player?

Appreciate your advice.

Allan,

I have been playing a lot of CDs with the player connected via HDMI to its companion Panny receiver SA-XR700 which in turn is connected to a 7.1 speaker setup. They sound fantastic. Much better than using a DVD player as a CD RAW bitstream transport to the XR-700.

Having said all that, the specs for the BD10 under "Audio Performance" do not indicate any upsampling for CD-Audio which is spec'd for DVD (linear audio) and DVD-Audio.

I need to go back and get a better demo of the Panasonic DMP-BD10. The first time I saw it briefly it was hooked up to a Sony SXRD 60" HDTV and it looked really good. The player itself looks great and I think this player is definently going to be sitting in my HT before April 07' !

Now if I could just decide on a reciever to go with the Panasonic blu-ray player before my brain explodes.

Unless there is a change and Sony and Pioneer add internal decoding of Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby True HD and DTS-HD. And offer 7.1 analog outputs instead of the 5.1 that the players are coming with. If nether happen by March 07' then my money is being spent on the Panasonic DMP-BD10 Blu-ray Player. Makes no sense to buy a player that can not even output DTS-HD 6.1 surround. We have had a limited number of 6.1 titles on SD-DVD for how long and 5.1 is the best they can give us?

I was really wanting a Sony ES or Pioneer Elite but the Panasonic will more than do the job. Ether that or I will hold on to the cash and wait for the next models with HDMI 1.3 to be available. Mmmmm decisions

With Panasonic seemingly the only Blu-Ray player manufacturer with their game together I would't be surprised if your wait for a 2nd-gen Panny would be a short one, Dave. Then again, their 1st gen is such a success, it's possible they'll put out a cheaper 2nd-gen player first, one that lacks all the features and performance of the BD10.

That might be a shrewd move for them seeing as how RCA is getting HD-DVD players (rebadged Toshiba's) on shelves for well under $400 already. The other manufacturers have to get their Blu-Ray machines out so that prices can start falling.

Hopefully, Panasonic will put out a cheapie and a flagship 2nd-gen model, much like Toshiba has done. That way everyone wins. Get affordabe players in the market, AND have models available for the enthusiasts.

Perhaps it's Neil Patrick Harris making the news, but I'm reminded of his role in Starship Troopers: "You don't approve? Well, too bad! It's simple numbers; they have more!!"

I just cancelled and ordered from Crutchfield who is also showing it in stock. Of course, Abt was giving a 7% discount, which amounted to a whopping $91 off MSRP . I'm a cheapskate and all, but I ordered one on 17 Oct, with a supposed 7 to 14 day backorder, then they told me 'first week of November' and now they're telling me '2 weeks'. Well, no thanks. I can't wait any longer.

Did you call for a price at Value Electronics?

They're not displaying their sale price, but it's less than $1299 (since that's crossed out) and free delivery.

Might be a better deal than either Crutchfield or Abt.

Sorry, but I won't deal with VE. I've had a bad experience in the past, and I'm not about to give them my business again.

Besides, they may have free shipping and have a lower price, but they are in NY, which means I'd have to pay 8.625% sales tax and they don't offer the same assurances and support as Crutchfield by a long-shot.

While the Panasonic the way it stands with the upcoming lossless audio upgrade. I was just figuring that if I waited for HDMI 1.3 that it would be better for when I buy my reciever next year. Granted the Panasonic would work really well even using the internal decoder and analog outputs. But I am thinking about waiting and if Panasonic drops the good model later. Pioneer or Sony will most likely have a better flagship player when the gen 2 players come out. I guess I need to decide soon wether or not to buy in a few months or later.

HDMI 1.3 is less of an issue for me. The deal breaker is none of the players on the market meet the BluRay live player specs for full interactivity. Pioneer won't support it until second gen, not sure when Samsung and Panasonic will support it.

An orange printed sheet came in the box with my BD10 which says in part:

"Panasonic is introducing the next generation of optical discs. "BD"-Blu-Ray disc, and it is expected that the discs will be equipped with new contents such as the "BD-J" function (using Java technology), in addition to high picture and sound quality.

I'm pretty sure that the Panasonic supports Java interactivity out of the box. There's a nice Java logo on the back of the player as well.

There is a difference between everything included in the BluRay live specs and java support. Things like ability to run two video windows instead of just one and several other items. WSR had a pretty good article on this a few issues back.

Indeed. I'm going to search out that article as I think there is a lot of misunderstanding as to what it is, exactly, that Blu-Ray Live is supposed to do!

My Panny arrived today via UPS from Crutchfield.

I've only just finished connecting it. I was going to download the firmware update, but when I checked it was already at version 1.2, so I don't need the current firmware update.

In other news, my unit still came with the Eight Below disc, the offer for the other tow titles, and the card about the updates to support DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD.

Very briefly as I haven't even done anything but play a DVD-A on the unit for about two minutes, I'm a lttle disappointed in the time alignment feature as it doesn't allow you to set the distance for the subwoofer! That makes no sense to me. Also, I don't see a way to set a 6.1 speaker setup, only 5.1 or 7.1.

Anyway, I have more playing around to do with my new toy right now.

Have fun, man! I don't think any of my equipment has ever let me set distance for the sub, but I've never paid top dollar. My SACD player was supposed to be good quality at the time though. Then again, it was Philips!

I've been wondering about the treatment of 6.1 material. If you have a 7.1 speaker setup, do you adjust your receiver to say you only have one surround back input (as my manual seems to suggest) or does the receiver automatically send the same signal over both surround back outputs? I'm guessing the former.

Just read an article in one of the trade papers that
say manufacturers expect Blu-Ray player prices to drop
$500 this time next year.

I would suspect the same will hold true for the 2nd
generation Toshibas with 1080p capability,
