Companion Books for TV on DVD series - Page 2

Re: Companion Books for TV on DVD series

"The Lucy Book" is wonderful. It contains entries for every single series and special that Lucy was a part of over her entire television career. That includes game show appearances as well. The section on "I Love Lucy" is a treasure trove. The author lets the reader know what was altered on episodes during re-runs and describes various openings over the years. Interviews with those who worked on the show and those who knew Lucy best (including her children, who have approved of the book) are sprinkled throughout. Perfect!

Jack,

Details about this book appear on Amazon's site. Strandbooks has it for $32.50--but hurry, just one copy left. I suspect more will arrive shortly, however as the actual publishing date nears.

Well, that's one more companion book I'll be buying--who said "classic tv" is dead?

Could you provide your impressions of these two books? Is "The Invaders" covered decently enough in the QM book?

The Fugitive book is large format, softcover. Titled 'The Official Fans Guide to the Fugitive' . Don't know what makes it 'official'. Has an intro by Barry Morse, usual background on how series came to be ,actors etc.List of Kimble's aliases, copy of the original treatment for the series by Roy Huggins & episode guide with trivia. A decent enough book, well researched. Published in 94.About 180 pages. Comparing it to the Robertson book I would say the latter wins by a short head, as it has a more detailed episode guide.

Quinn Martin, Producer has approx 200 pages, hardcover. It is really a book about the series he produced rather than QM. Each series being a chapter. There are a lot of quotes and anecdotes by people who worked on the programmes & overall is interesting & informative.'The Invaders' chapter covers about 12 pages. There are no episode guides. However came away feeling could have been better.

Hope this helps
Both books good but not great. 3 stars out of five.

Re: Companion Books for TV on DVD series

Thanks for summarizing these two books for me. Sounds like I'm not missing too much by not having the "Official Fan Guide to The Fugitive". The Robertson book is quite good actually and something I'd be referring to consistently if and when Paramount ever releases this monumental series.

As for the QM book, I did read a solid review on Amazon which stated that the author appeared to me a bit 'green' in the area of television production. I would have preferred some emphasis on Quinn Martin the man as he was such an amazing personality, but may still pick this book up just the same.

Darned if there isn't a companion book to this show...and just in time for me with the first season coming out next month. Just now ordered a copy from Amazon for $4.59. I wish there was a comprehensive list somewhere of all the classic shows featuring a companion guide--but I have to admit, your list is a pretty good one!

Re: Companion Books for TV on DVD series

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the great series of books on Dark Shadows, especially those made by Pomegranate Press. This is an interesting case as I think it's probably one of the few occassions when one of the stars of a classic TV show not only puts out a book or two about the show, but creates her own publishing company as well! Such is the case with Kathryn Leigh Scott and Pomegranate Press.

Not only has she put out books on her own show, she was the one who published The Fugitive Recaptured, and the books on The Rockford Files, Maverick, the original The Night Stalker and Charlie's Angels, which also starred another Dark Shadows cast member, Kate Jackson.

A lot of the people on this thread owe a debt of gratitude to Miss Scott for all she's done for classic TV- and besides, she's a very nice lady in person!

Take a look at what she currently has to offer:

Hi, was there ever a "Little House On The Praire" TV SHOW Episode Guide book released?

Re: Companion Books for TV on DVD series

I have read The Mission: Impossible Dossier many times. With the series coming to DVD soon, it will make an excellent companion. The book covers many behind the scenes details for each episode. Each season is also given a synopsis. Highly recommended.

Re: Companion Books for TV on DVD series

"The Prisoner" by Alain Carraze and Helene Oswald is a fine publication as well as "The Avengers Companion" by Alain Carraze and Jean-Luc Putheaud.

Also, I like "This is a Thriller" by Alan Warren based on the series narrated by Boris Karloff.

Please, please do not get this book. It has over 250 typographical errors (some hysterical) in the episode guide portion alone, including missing/bad credits. If you must, last time I looked, it was available online at no cost.

I think Ed Robertson's Fugitive Guide is excellent and The Columbo Phile, but the best companion book ever is The Twilight Zone one.

I didn't see this listed yet:

I Spy: A History and Episode Guide to the Groundbreaking Television Series. (Marc Cushman, Linda LaRosa, Robert Culp)

It's quite thorough and informative.

Re: Companion Books for TV on DVD series

I like and use most of the Trek companion books (including the Okuda Encyclopedia); I also enjoy The Outer Limits book by Schow et al., and the Dark Shadows: The First Year book, which includes capsul descriptions of all of the first 210 or so episodes up to and including the arrival of Barnabas.

I probably would have listed them had I seen the thread earlier.

I recently communicated with Kathryn Leigh Scott, who informed me that Pomegranate Press is no longer publishing much new material. The only good news I can gather from this is that their backlog will be let go for less than if they were flourishing. But truth be told, I'd rather the Press were flourishing.

That's really great that you've met her. In my recent letter from her, she was very gracious and encouraging.
