SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Thread Starter
I was looking through my DVD collection the other day and checking out which ones needed to be upgraded from the bare bones versions to the special editions that are currently available. I decided to make note of which DVDs simply do NOT have a special edition at all. So this list isn't about movies that aren't on DVD yet, or DVDs that are SEs but you think they should be 2 disc sets, etc. I'm talking about movies currently on DVD that have NO special features at all and you're absolutely surprised the studios haven't released one yet, either because they were big box office hits, critical favorites or have found a dedicated cult following. Feel free to add to my list. This list involves region 1 releases only.

Air Force One
Beetlejuice
The Birdcage
Creepshow
Dick Tracy
Escape from LA
48 Hours
Fright Night
The Game
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) - does have a commentary though-
Misery
Nightbreed
Poltergeist
Prince of Darkness
Raising Arizona
The Road Warrior
Scary Movie
Scream
They Live
True Lies
Under Siege
Wayne's World

I'm genuinely surprised that none of these have even a marginally decent special edition DVD release yet.

Any other additions?

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Air Force One has a commentary.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Scream has been available as an R1 SE for ages, however it's still non-anamorphic (and only the R-rated cut).

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

wonder what happened to THE GAME.

DAvid prior who worked on the panic room special edition was somewhat cryptic but seemed to give the impression a spec ed was forthcoming for the game.

in a thread a year ago or so.

Strange, isn't it?

Universal has released a single disc special edition in region 2 earlier this year, however the extras are somewhat underwhelming which is why I never upgraded. I still have the hope that an R1 release, should it ever come, will be a lot more special.

Still waiting for a First Knight SE

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

I don't know how shocked I am, but I'd definitely love one for The Road Warrior and Bram Stoker's Dracula (I believe the latter is coming '07).

True Lies should have one, too (though I ain't a big fan of the movie, I am a Cameron fan).

But The Birdcage, Dick Tracy, Escape from LA, They Live and Wayne's World - ? You really think these are deserving of Special Editions (with all the bells and whistles)?

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

It's not just hits from the 80s and 90s- only recently has there been an announcement made for a Special Edition of The Punisher starring Tom Jane and John Travolta, and even last year's Brokeback Mountain has yet to receive the SE treatment, though I wouldn't be surprised if one was in the works already. More double-dipping for the consumer- rats!

IIRC, Road Warrior is in the works? I think True Lies would have had one by now if not for 9/11.

I'd probably buy a Dick Tracy SE. I think it's an interesting movie.

I'll second Raising Arizona, and I'd like a new version of The Rocketeer.

Supposedly an SE is coming next year for the 25th anniversary of the film

Wayne's World

The current DVD does have some things on it. There is a commentary and I think at least a featurette (I don't remember exactly what the video based extras are though)

Misery

An SE exists in R2. Don't know why they won't bring it here.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

I thought a FACE/OFF SE was forthcoming. As for the John Carpenter titles mentioned, I just want R1 versions of STARMAN, PRINCE OF DARKNESS, and THEY LIVE with the commentary tracks found in their Europeean counterparts.

And don't get me started on THE GAME...

Anyone mention 'The Rocketeer' or 'Outland'?

Two good movies with piss-poor DVDs.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

BEETLEJUICE most of all, I can't believe there is still no SE for that. Its crazy to me and its one that keeps getting mentioned over and over. Its like my favorite movie of all time, seriously. After a wait like this, I want a jam packed DVD, with a full view of the whole day-o shrimp dinner scene

I'm fine with the Wayne's World we already have, has enough special features for me. Dick Tracy I'd love to see, I haven't purchased the DVD yet waiting for an SE. Hocus Pocus I'd like to see an SE of as well as the first two Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies that I also have not purchased yet in hopes for some SEs. Birdcage is one of my fav movies and I might get a SE if it had good enough stuff on it. True Lies, YES, where is this too? I love this movie and really wanna pick this up, but have held off once again in hopes of a SE.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was the first I thought of. Even besides the lack of the features, it's not even available in widescreen.

The Absent Minded Professor.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Better Off Dead
The Breakfast Club
Sixteen Candles
Weird Science
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Uncle Buck
Teen Wolf
Revenge of the Nerds - (currently being remade, so we might get an SE to coincide with the film's release)
Adventures in Babysitting - (also being remade, and hoping very much for an SE)

and while I'm not exactly a huge fan of either, I'm surprised that "10 Things I Hate About You" and "She's All That" haven't been given the SE treatment yet...they're two of the more popular modern teen movies...

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Halloween II
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers

Given the amount of material ready (scenes from the TV version of II, and the "Producers Cut" of Curse), coupled with the success Anchor Bay has had with the original, 4 and 5 (God knows they keep re-releasing them), it's a wonder Universal (for II) and Miramax (for Curse) hasn't gotten around to this yet. At least they could let Anchor Bay do special editions of these movies.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Excalibur deserves a SE, badly. I know R1 got a commentary, but here in R2 land we got a bare bones. A 2 disker with an indepth making of, deleted scenes etc would be top of my purchase list.

Also Scary Movie has a pretty good SE over her in R2.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

The titles that really gall me right now as far as R1 is concerned are the first two "Man With No Name" movies: "A Fist Full of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars" more. Both are non-anamorphic and "bare bones" in their R1 configuration; and yet it's my understanding that both have been available for almost a year now as 16:9 anamorphic Widescreen Special Editions in other regions.

I was also going to mention "True Lies", but I see that someone beat me to it.

As far as I'm aware, the original "City Slickers" is only available in a "bare bones" configuration. That's pretty *shocking* to me. At least the A/V quality of the current disc is pretty nice.

There's always the possibility of going multi-region to obtain alot of these titles. Why be limited by region lock-out for certain titles? I'm mostly sticking to my native signal format for the major of most releases out there, NTSC, and the occasional infrequent smatterings of PAL versions.

For a Few Dollars. Here's what the Region 2 Japan NTSC Ultimate Edition has: (from dvdcompare.net)
Extras:
DISC ONE
* The Film
Extras:
Theatrical Trailer

DISC TWO
"A New Standard" - documantary (20 mins)
"Back For More" - documentary (7 mins)
"Tre Voci / Three Voices" - documentary (10 mins)
"Restoration Italian Style" - featurette
"The American Release Version - Extended Scenes" - featurette
"Location Comparisons" - featurette
12 Radio Spots
Double Bill Trailer:
- "Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More"
Collector's Slideshow Photo Gallery
Bonus Trailers: “The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly”, “The Magnificent Seven”, “Open Range”, “Walking Tall” and “Species 3”
Subtitles:
English and Japanese
Picture format:
2.35:1 Anamorphic NTSC
Soundtrack(s):
English DTS 5.1
English Dolby Digital 5.1
Japanese Dolby Digital 2.0 mono
Italian Dolby Digital 2.0 mono
Case type:
Digipak

No more shall be said.

Re: SHOCKED: Movies that don't have special editions yet

Technically, Bram Stoker's Dracula does have an SE - a lavish Criterion laserdisc that I own.

My number one film in need of a special edition...Heavenly Creatures.
