Fanboys

I posted this in the Star Wars thread, but it's its own entity and deserves its own thread.

Besides, can we have enough Kristen Bell as Slave Leia?

Description from the IMDb:

Quote:
Four guys from the Midwest drive across the country to honor the wish of their dying friend: to watch "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" at George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch before the movie's worldwide release.

Sounds promising. And then there's this:

Besides that, check these out:

Come on. This couldn't be any more up geek alley if it tried. The very fact that they tried to get Jorge Garcia to play Harry Knowles is somehow encouraging.

There's a very positive review online:

I'm looking forward to it.

Re: Fanboys

According to comingsoon.net, Carrie Fisher, Ray Park and Billy Dee Williams are in the film as well.

Re: Fanboys

A little story:

My cousin is a struggling screen writer who lives in LA. He's been having some moderate success selling his screen plays to a few European production companies (One movie may be filmed in Galway and has the interest of some of the Python boys to produce). Although he's been bouncing between LA, NYC, Germany and Ireland for the last few years nothing of his has yet made it to screen. He's currently writing for German television.

Anyway, about two years ago he was telling me how he and his partner were pitching this particular movie all over Hollywood. They managed to get meetings with a number of studio executives, but couldn't sell it. All the studios seemed to think that his idea wouldn't appeal to a wide enough audience.

What was the idea? It was a comedy - a road movie about a group of fanboys travelling in a van enroute to a convention. His version had a mixture of geeks: 1 Star Wars, 1 Star Trek, 1 Comic Book, 1 Gamer, 1 Ren-Faire, and 1 Goth/LARPG. The title was...... "Fanboys". It's either theft or coincidence, but that's Hollywood for you. My cousin isn't upset about it since he understands that that's the risk you take when you pitch an idea. They can always change it just enough to get away with it. Besides, if he made a stink he knows he's never get hired.
______

As far as this one goes: I kind of wish it wasn't focused even more narrowly than my cousin's version. I'd have loved to see other types of "fanboys" lampooned/portrayed, and I think the dialog between the different types could have been hilarious. But, I'm still looking forward to this.

Re: Fanboys

I think I'd still be upset about it. I can imagine he'll go to see it, mainly to see if he can recognize any of his ideas, and get either mad or depressed if he does. He's smart not to fight it since he's trying to break in, but it all does really suck.

Re: Fanboys

It's also possible that it's coincidence. He can't be the first person to think that fanboys are funny.

Re: Fanboys

"Fanboys" is such an obvious title for a movie that I wouldn't call it theft. "It's like Detroit Rock City meets Trekkies!" Seriously, after "Trekkies", who hasn't envisioned a Star Wars-related comedy/docu called "Fanboys"?

Or... "Warsies" (free lunch if anyone gets the reference)

Re: Fanboys

I propose we don't make theft/not theft the direction of the thread, but I guess everyone's free to type what they want.

Re: Fanboys

The guys who made this actually pitched this before The Phantom Menace had it's world premiere. I read about this movie at around the time the Star Wars hype was at a fever pitch, around March of '99. After the movie turned out to be such a massive disappointment to most people, I thought the interest in such a concept would of died off, but to my surprise, here it is.

Re: Fanboys

I think the disappointment makes it even more interesting. I'm already cringing at the post-movie reaction scene. "My dying wish was to watch THAT?" Heh.

Re: Fanboys

I am definitely interested in seeing this, and that picture sealed the deal. I like me Kristen Bell!

A trailer is available, albeit in YouTube quality video:

I got a "failed" when I tried to play that embedded. If you experience the same, here's the URL:

Re: Fanboys

That pic is from 2006 if I'm not mistaken. She didn't do anything quite so interesting this year.

This movie seems to be in quite the state of development. I assumed it was going to be released soon, but then they announced the contest to win a walk-on part in the movie, so I guess that means now for a little while longer.

Re: Fanboys

That's kind of cold to talk about PMs in relation to the lovely Ms. Bell. Then again, I defer to Peter Wolf.

I hope that when this issue's gone
I'll see you when your clothes are on

Of course, we know where the song goes after that. Besides, I know if it's any good, my buddy Tim will hook me up.

Re: Fanboys

This week's Entertainment Weekly has a Q&A with Bell and it states Fanboys will be released in January.

Re: Fanboys

I was just reading about Fanboys, and it seems there have been a few developments in the past few months.

Apparently, the Weinsteins decided to edit oput the whole "dying of cancer" plotline and make it into a more typical teen comedy, since that tested better. So there was some internet upcry, and the end result is that the Weinsteins say they will release both versions on DVD, and are supposedly exploring the possibility of a theatrical release of both versions (which seems unlikely to me, but that's what they are saying).

Here's the article.

Personally, the idea of a guy trying to see the new Star Wars film before he dies of cancer - I might see a film like that. Without it, I'm guessing it would just be a "laugh at the Star Wars fanboys" film, which I can see would have more commercial appeal in a dumb teem comedy way, but wouldn't interest me at all.

Re: Fanboys

Wasn't part of it that the guy wanted to see it before he died, and it being "The Phantom Menace," his reaction was, "THAT is what I had to see as my dying wish?!"?

Re: Fanboys

I can see why they opted for direct-to-dvd. I can't see this playing too wide with the mainstream crowd. Hell, if Grindhouse couldn't find an audience.. there's probably even less of an audience for this no matter how good the final product might be.

Re: Fanboys

Surely Harvey and Bob won't release both versions at once, will they? I'm sure they'll sit on the "original version" for an unspecified amount of time with the release date always "to be determined."

Yeah. And now that the meaninglessly tiny audience of people on the internet that might have seen it have risen up against the edited version, they won't get a theatrical release and no mainstream audience will ever see it. I'm sure the people behind the movie want their version out there for the world to see but I bet they're not too happy about not having a theatrical release (even if they had to get one with an edited version).

"It's not going to work, Darth Weinstein. There was never any doubt that you would release both versions of the movie on DVD, probably months apart, so as to leech as much money from Star Wars fans as possible. Our boycott will continue until the Weinstein Co. announces that they are returning control of Fanboys to the Star Wars fans who made it, releasing the original version in theatres and doing away with their anti-fan version of the film altogether."

In my mind, I hear this in the voice of Reed Tucker from GTA III.

Re: Fanboys

Someone needs to tell the geeks the Bob Sugar axiom:

It's not show "friends", it's show business. When you sell your film to TWC, this is what you get. Welcome to Hollywood.
